General Appearance: Like most Asian girls, Hyun isn’t very tall. She’s only five foot tall and weighs about 77 pounds, making her slightly underweight.
She has straight black hair with the occasional dark brown highlight here and there, her eyes are brown and she has natural double eyelids. Her skin is a deathly pale as a result from her stressful last year, and she has dark lines under her eyes from insomnia.
Even though she’s a teenage girl, Hyun has no interest whatsoever in dressing up or wearing make-up, though this wasn’t always the case. When she was younger, she greatly enjoyed going shopping and wearing all sorts of jewelry. The move to America and the discovery of her strange powers have made her very insecure, and so she has a desire to remain invisible to other people. She usually wears oversized t-shirts or turtlenecks and sweatpants with fingerless gloves in an attempt to be as warm and comfortable as possible.
She rarely deals with people outside of her family nowadays, and so she only occasionally brushes her hair. When she’s going out, she does brush it but even then doesn’t put a great deal of effort into it.
Most people who see her for the first time think she’s seriously ill because of her outward appearance.
Personality: Hyun-Jung is a silent and introverted person, not because she’s shy, but because she often struggles with differentiating between actual people’s voices and the voices in her mind and because she’s worried about her English skills. By other people this is often interpreted as a sign of indifference and rudeness, and so she barely has any friends to speak of.
She struggles with her “gift” and sees it more as a curse, because she’s never had formal training, she can’t control it at all and often loses herself trying to figure out what’s real and what’s not.
Before she started hearing things, Hyun was a very warm and lively young girl with a great imagination and lots of creativity. When she’s all alone, she doesn’t hear any voices, and so she’s more her old self. Sadly, this makes her feel very lonely, and on a daily base she wishes she could be a normal girl. Since her abilities started manifesting themselves, Hyun has become extremely withdrawn, and she’s becoming quite isolated. She hates being alone, but she hates the voices, and people judging her because of them more, and so she has to pick the least bad of the two.
Hyun hates being seen as weak and pathetic, though she does little to prove people otherwise. She doesn’t enjoy being pitied, but prefers it over the bullies who make fun of her for who and what she is.
Now that she knows there are other people struggling with the same things as her, she feels a bit better. However, she’s gotten used to being treated a certain way and isolating herself from others, and so the thought of going to another school with again new students and teachers scares her. She worries greatly about being accepted.
Since her powers started manifesting themselves, her family has been having a great deal of problems as a result of having to deal with Hyun’s problems. The relationship between her parents is under a great deal of strain, and sometimes she worries they plan on getting a divorce. Her sister is going down the same path as Hyun and struggles with concentrating in school as well, although this is mostly because of her stressed home-situation. Hyun always feels terrible for the pain she’s causing her family, and sometimes wishes she could disappear so that they could be happy again.

History
Hyun-Jung was the first born daughter of Ho-Pyong and Ellen Choi, in a local hospital in South Korea.
Her mother was half-American, and was born in New York city. Because of her mother’s heritage, Hyun was fortunate enough to be born with natural double-creased eyelids as opposed to a single one.
The first three years of her life, Hyun was horribly spoiled by especially her father, who doted on his child every chance he got. The world stopped revolving around her alone when her younger sister Min-Jung was born. Initially, Hyun couldn’t stand her little sister because she stole all her attention, and would barely even look at her. When she did, it would be with disdain.
Min-Jung however, seemed to really like her sister despite her spiteful behavior. After around four months, Hyun became more open and accepting towards her sibling, and even allowed Min to play with her old toys.
Overall, Hyun’s early life was pleasant and uneventful. She went to school and proved to be quite social, although she often got into trouble for daydreaming.
When she turned eleven, everything changed. Hyun became more agitated and distracted. It was just assumed that this was because the girl had hit puberty, her parents had been warned by friends that children became difficult to handle during that time, and that Hyun’s behavior was normal.
Shortly after Hyun’s twelfth birthday, the family moved to New York to take care of Ellen’s father, who had been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and requested his daughter to come home. Ho-Pyong, Hyun-Jung’s father, also intended on starting a business here. Hyun’s behavior had gradually become worse and she became more quiet and distant, but this time it was blamed on the move. Hyun had openly voiced her complaints about leaving her friends and country to go live in America, and believed acting difficult would make her parents change their minds and move back home.
Though she’d been acting difficult for a few years while dealing with puberty and all the changes it brought, when she finally turned thirteen, her problems and complaints suddenly became real. Seemingly out of the blue, Hyun-Jung started hearing things, hearing people, even though no one spoke. At first her family believed this was just another antic of their daughter, just another attempt at annoying her parents enough to make them want to move back to South Korea and an attempt at trying to get attention.
When she started to really become isolated in just a manner of days, her mother took her to see a doctor whom initially sent her to a neurologist to determine if she had a personality disorder. When this was ruled out, the only other explanation the doctor could think of was that Hyun was a “meta-human”, a person with strange powers that usually presented themselves during puberty. He contacted Hammel, the school for meta-humans and informed them of his suspicions. A week later, a recruiter came to see Hyun personally and confirmed that she was, indeed, a meta-human.
This revelation brought forth much drama within the family. Ho-Pyong believed going back to Korea would somehow fix his daughter, maybe this whole mess had been caused by stress? After all, Hyun had been pulled from the culture she’d grown up in to go live in a country that was totally different in every single way. Ellen didn’t agree, and believed Hyun should go study in a professional environment, like the recruiter had advised. Min-Jung felt embarrassed to be around her sister because she often acted strange, and the situation at home made it difficult for her to focus in school, and her grades began to drop.
After about two weeks, Ho-Pyong finally realized his daughter was in serious distress, and reluctantly gave in to his wife’s wishes.
Together with her mother, Hyun travelled to Vermont to go see the school and to see what the possibilities were for the rest of the family to be nearby.
Roleplay Example
“Well, isn’t it lovely here?” Ellen asked her daughter quietly as she looked out the window, “Oh look June! There’s even a pond outside, and I think I see fish.”
Hyun didn’t respond to her mother’s comments. How could she possibly be this positive? Did she enjoy the thought of abandoning her daughter here? Hyun had been difficult in the past, sure, but she hadn’t been so bad that her parents wanted her gone, had she? And why did she have to refer to her as “June”? That wasn’t her name. Just because she lived in the US now didn’t mean she needed to go as far as to change her name as far as Hyun was concerned.
Thankfully the hall was fairly quiet at this time, so Hyun didn’t have to worry about getting overwhelmed by her powers again. “Mom?”
Ellen turned and smiled, “June, this is America. Speak English.” She crossed the hall and sat next to the young girl.
Apparently her powers hadn’t gotten rid of her hormones, and Hyun crossed her arms in defiance, “No. I want to go home.”
The woman sighed and leaned back in her chair slightly. What was she going to do with this child? Was this even the right decision? Maybe Ho-Pyong had been right about going back to Korea… Her thought pattern was swiftly interrupted when a small group of teens passed through the hallway and Hyun shifted uncomfortably. No. She needed to learn how to control this… power, this magic, whatever it was.
“If you’re going to live here, you’re going to have to speak the language. It’s just that simple, June.”
”Stop calling me that! My name is Hyun! Hyun-Jung Choi! And I don’t want to be here, I want to go home!!” she screeched as tears were finally starting to fill her eyes, “Please mom, please don’t do this to me…”
“Stop that.” Ellen stood up and knelt before her daughter, grabbing her arms, “Look at me. You are not a baby anymore, only babies cry to express themselves. Now tell me what’s wrong with you, why can’t you just try and fit in a little?” though the sentence ended there, Hyun managed to hear her mother’s unspoken words through the thoughts of the students that were now slowly flooding into the hallways. ‘Why do you have to make this more difficult on everyone?’
She wasn’t certain whether it was anger that made her push her mother’s hands away and rush off into the hallway, or sadness. “Hyu- June! Come back, we have an appointment here!” Ellen called after her as the child disappeared into the crowds.
Slowly but surely, the halls were filling up with people. And where people were, there were thoughts. Damn these hormones for acting up at the most inconvenient time! She should’ve stayed by the office with her mother, at least there weren’t this many people there.
Regular voices and thought voices were starting to mix, and even hearing one conversation clearly became difficult. And everyone seemed to be getting louder too, the more people left their classrooms. Her head felt like it was exploding, and Hyun knew she needed to get out of here before she’d go crazy. But seeing through these crowds was difficult, there were so many people, and the great majority towered over her. It was impossible to see where she was going, and she started to panic.
“Help… m-mom…” she mumbled incoherently as her breathing quickened and her eyes darted all over the place, her mind trying to escape from this nightmare. She’d never had a panic attack before, and she wasn’t even sure she was having one now. All she knew as that her heart was pounding against her chest like a wild animal, she had trouble breathing, and she was getting a little nauseous.
Apparently her panic was also noted by various bystanders, “Are you alright? H-Help! I think we need a doctor!” one girl called out over the crowd, causing the rest to grow concerned as well.
