The Basics
Name: Dexter Garth Colbrith
Nicknames: Garth
Age: 16
Orientation: Assumed heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers:
Object mimicry – Garth has the power to occasionally transform himself into other objects. More often than not, however, he picks up the essence of a thing. A brick wall for strength, a book to help him learn, even a wiffle ball for a bit of childish whimsy. He has some control over this, and can intentionally take on certain traits, though it does take effort. Drawbacks include fatigue, confused emotions, getting stuck as random objects and occasionally turning into grapes.
Play By: Michael Cera
The Details
Hair Color: Brownish
Eye Color: Brown
Any Piercings? None
Any Tattoos? His mother would kill him
Any Scars? A few charming ones from childhood, especially the one on the side of his hand from smacking a nail.
General Appearance:
Clocking in at about 5’11”, Garth is pretty much your average guy. Brown eyes, brownish hair and a light dusting of freckles make him pretty much the man he is today. He even has a bit of muscle still left from his charming years on the farm, so he has something to impress the ladies if his sense of humor ever fails. Also, he feels like his hands are a bit big, but he would never mention that. Because that’s just weird. Tragically, Garth is rocking the babyface, but he tries to play up the hint of mustache that’s growing in. Someday, it will be truly epic.
For clothes, Garth has a pretty relaxed style. A t-shirt and jeans for the summer, a flannel shirt and jeans for the winter is about as complicated as he gets. His shoes of choice are either red Converses or solid black Nikes, because Garth respects the swoosh. A sturdy pair of hiking boots and nigh-indestructible rain boots are all he will confess to having, but somewhere in his closet there is a pair of well shined dress shoes, as well as a suit. Garth cleans up quite nicely.
Personality:
Garth is a pretty chill and awkward guy. His basic mode of communication is banter, and he has a vast knowledge of corny pick-up lines and bad jokes. Like his dad always said “The easiest way to make a girl smile it to tickle her; the most honorable way is to make her laugh.” Garth tries to make everyone laugh, and he can really be quite the clown. However, he sometimes fails to recognize a serious situation, so his general tomfoolery can become annoying and inappropriate quickly.
Garth is very protective, especially of younger girls, who tend to remind him of his sister. However, he’ll become protective of any friend. This doesn’t always work, because he’s easily distracted. Still, he’s always there when you ask. He also has quite a way with animals from his days on the farm, and generally knows how to calm both people and animals down.
Garth absolutely cannot read people. If you say you are fine and those tears are from allergies, he will believe you. Because of this, he can be pretty easy to lie to, though he’s no dummy. Garth knows full well when he’s being lied to blatantly, and really doesn’t appreciate it.
Though very outgoing, Garth can be a quiet guy when he wants too. He’s not the best as school, so he will have the occasionally study binge, locking himself in a room for hours and just trying to learn. When he’s tired or very cold, Garth becomes almost silent and can easily blend into the background. And don’t ever get him thinking. When he’s wrapped up in his own thoughts, Garth is completely oblivious.

History
Once upon a time, there was the classic Midwestern teenage love story. She was a high-class city slicker who was staying with her aunt for the summer and he was a low brow farm boy out to win her heart. Not knowing what city slickers liked, James tried flowers and a few songs; luckily for him, Lila was looking for a charming, old-fashioned gentleman. They were both nineteen and they fell head over heels in love, eventually getting married and accepting the blessing of James’ parents and half of the family farm. By the time they were both twenty, Lila had given birth to a healthy baby boy. He was named Dexter for her father and Garth for James’. Neither of the new parents had any idea what parenthood would bring.
Garth, as he came to be known, was such a success as a child that his parents decided to try again, this time birthing a charming young girl, Eleanor Rose. At the tender age of five, it was love at first sight for Garth and he vowed to be the best big brother ever. His parents were amused by so strong a vow, and happily surprised when it became apparent that he intended to follow through. As he grew up, Garth remained fiercely protective of his little sister and took it upon himself to teach her the basics of life, like how to properly wash your hands, and how to play catch.
Garth managed to enjoy a terribly normal childhood on the farm. He rose early to help with chores and headed off to school like any other boy, where he earned a reputation as the class clown. He had quite a few friends, but was not the favorite teachers. However, to a young boy, teachers are of little concern, and by keeping respectful, managed to avoid several trips to the office.
During the summers, Garth and Eleanor Rose stayed with their Nana and Pappy in the big world of New York City, where Garth learned that fitting in was a good skill to have. Their grandparents made sure that their country grandchildren had proper exposure and enrichment to the fine arts. No bumpkins in their family. As a result, Garth managed a very odd cross between a Midwestern and proper Northern accent, which he still speaks with today.
At the age of thirteen, Garth was quite excited about puberty. Growing hair was quite manly, and even though his voice had cracked once or twice, it would all be worth it when he got a cool adult voice. The headaches and weird dizzy feeling were totally normal too. Imagine Garth’s surprise, then, when while hanging out near a fruit bowl one day, he very suddenly found himself on the floor and quite… different. He couldn’t talk, couldn’t move, and he really couldn’t see, only sort of sense where he was. He also felt strangely fat. The feeling passed quickly and when he came back to his normal state, he saw that Eleanor, then eight, had summoned their parents, with claims that her brother had just turned into grapes.
Concerned by his apparent fainting spell, Lila and James took Garth to get his blood tested. When the results came back, everyone was surprised to discover that Garth was meta-human. His parents were unsure as to what to do. Garth was unsure as to how to feel. Eleanor Rose was thrilled that she now had a magical older brother.
Hammel became involved very quickly. Within a week, the family was contacted and after several long and mildly painful discussions, it was decided that Garth would go away for schooling and training. Eleanor Rose was crushed, but Garth promised to call every week, a promise so far kept.
At Hammel, it was discovered, after much trial and error, that Garth possessed object mimicry. He managed to fit in rather well and gain a few good friends. Garth improved his mimicry skills, but one problem still looms; grapes.
If Garth comes within five feet of most grapes or grape products, he is almost certain to be transformed into a bunch of grapes. He cannot control this, and therefore rather dramatically avoids grapes. However, avoiding fruit, jelly, juice and wine all the time can be difficult, so Garth tends to eat at odd hours and only at places he knows won’t put him near grapes.
Roleplay Example
Thunk! That, Garth realized faintly, had been the sound of his head hitting the floor. A most excellent start to the morning. Sitting up and rubbing his head, he sighed, before checking the time. His alarm wasn’t due to go off for another four minutes.
“Awesome.” Garth muttered, smiling to himself as he rubbed his head. “Finally beating the clock.” He stood up and stretched his arms widely, taking the time to yawn, just to stretch his jaw. Giving his head another good rub, Garth shook his head quickly. “Mmmkay, time for the doing of the stuff.”
It was early, and a Saturday at that, but Garth wanted to be ready early. He was going into town today, and he needed to get something before noon, because he had to get it packaged and in the mail before three in the afternoon. The special occasion was his mother’s birthday, and he wanted to get her something good. This was his first year away from home, and he wanted to get his mom something cool. There were only so many potholders he could make and still manage to surprise her.
No, Garth was looking for something that really suited his mom. Something elegant and shiny, and something that cost less than fifty dollars, because that was all he had.
“Alright, off to a good day.” he muttered, combing through his hair with his fingers quickly. Actually combing his hair would be silly, and it really wasn’t that important. “Cool, so game plan is early breakfast, quick shopping, try to make friends at FedEx.” He looked in the mirror and grinned, making sure he didn’t look sleepy or awkward. “Okay, now where did I put my shoes?”
