The Basics
Name: Shane Giles McLeod
Nicknames: Brain, Gilly
Age: 43
Orientation: Confused (But Heterosexual)
Desired Rank/Job: Resident Doctor at Hammel
Powers: Hormone Manipulation— Shane has the ability to manipulate the glands that produce and release hormones, and sense hormone levels. He can sense and stimulate or dampen the output of estrogen, endorphins, testosterone, adrenaline or other hormones that affect bodily functions and emotions such as phenylethylalamine (the hormone that triggers love).
Side effects-
This ability is reflective: stimulating or damping others’ hormone levels affects Shane’s own body in a similar, if slightly less pronounced manner. Using his power consumes energy and leaves him fatigued. He’s also extremely sensitive to manufactured medications, he overreacts to anesthesia and aspirin etc. Prolonged and repeated use of Shane’s powers on an individual can lead to permanent hormonal imbalances, or balances, because that person’s glands become conditioned to operating at different levels; however there is a great risk for Shane to do this because his own hormone levels adapt to mirror the individual he’s modifying which can permanently change his own behavior.
Limitations-
1. Hormone stimulation and dampening is related. Stimulating adrenaline (energetic hormone) output in a subject automatically dampens their serotonin (sleep hormone) output. Shane has more control over this when creating emotions rather than overloading a system with a single hormone.
2. Influencing groups is less effective, consumes more energy, and results in more potent reflection on his own body.
3. Shane can control the output of multiple hormones to create chemical signals such as Love, but the affects of his control don’t last longer than the time it takes for the body to return to its natural state of homeostasis. This is usually within 24 hours but can be as short as 15 minutes.
Play By: (Younger-ish) George Clooney
The Details
Hair Color: Graying Black
Eye Color: Brown
Any Piercings? None
Any Tattoos? A Chinese dragon winding the width of his back that ends just below the shoulder blades. There are crystal balls in both claws with a yin-yang in each.
Any Scars? Quite a few from general mischief as a child: falling out of trees, catching fishhooks on his fingers, scrapes and rope burns from rock climbing.
General Appearance: Shane’s look is slightly tousled yet refined. He just spent 2 years as a doctor in the Peace Corps and the quality of his apparel reflects this. His usual dress is a worn and slightly ragged second-hand suit jacket with a collared shirt that is never fully buttoned.
Always quick to smile, laugh, or show emotion, Shane’s face has permanent laugh lines and is starting to show his age. It’s accented by his salt and peppered hair that is professional but styled to look unkempt. He bears his age well, and maintains a decent amount of muscle on his 6’1” frame. His voice is welcoming and earnest, inviting others into his confidence.
Personality: Shane is the ultimate boy scout. He believes in doing the right thing because it’s right. He refuses to lie, or cheat, but often finds himself beating around the bush to try and candy coat what he’s saying. This often leads to internal conflict because he’s had to open his eyes to the fact that the world isn’t as black and white as he’d like to believe. Shane is a caring individual that wants to help others.
He is extremely intelligent. His quick wit and snap-judgements of others is often detrimental as it beneficial. He never intentionally demeans anyone, but he often underestimates others and forgets they are as smart (never smarter) as he is.

History
Shane had a typical Western childhood. He grew up as the middle-child in a small community in Montana. His mother was a bank teller and his dad was a lawyer. The McLeod family was comfortably middle class and could afford to send all three children to college. He was part of the local Boy Scout Troop and volunteered for the local veterinarian. His childhood dream was to become a veterinarian, he loved working with animals and kept a menagerie in the back yard: rabbits, cats, dogs, horses, and even a lizard or two when he could catch them. Although Shane isn’t a vegetarian, he refuses to hunt or kill mammals, but he loves to fish.
His dreams of becoming a veterinarian were sidelined after his power manifested. The summer he turned 13 he fell in love with a girl and unknowingly caused her to fall in love with him in addition to altering her normal hormone levels so that she became a depressive. He was picked up by Hammel when he had blood work done for a sports physical at the start of that school year.
He had trouble mastering his powers while at Hammel because he was afraid of them and the damage he could cause. He graduated his academic studies early but slowly mastered his manipulation skills, partially due to the dangerous manner of his practice-it required human test subjects.
Once he graduated Hammel, Shane decided to become a neurologist to learn just how his powers could affect the human body. He spent the next 12 years in college obsessively studying human biochemistry until he earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience concentrating on hormones. He then earned a M.D. for general practice because he wanted to join the Peace Corps and travel the world to help children in countries that couldn’t provide adequate medical care for them.
Shane has just arrived in the U.S. from a two year tour of Sri Lanka where he was aiding the disaster relief from the tsunami. He’s applying to Hammel for the position of resident on-call doctor. He was the subject of prejudice and fear from his fellow relief volunteers and is seeking a community filled with other metas where he can serve others and live his life without prejudice.
Roleplay Example
Shane looked at the latest group of battered, bruised, and malnourished children waiting outside of the white canvas tent. This is unreal. There seems to be no end. If it’s not malaria, its gangrene, aids, influenza, scurvy, polio or at the least lacerations and broken bones. He shook his head and bent over to dig through the supply box. If the pitiful state of the children wasn’t enough, it seemed like he was stretching everything beyond its limits—including his own body.
He hadn’t slept much in the last 3 months. Their eyes haunted him at night, pleading and begging him to ease the pain to make the world turn right side up. These kids knew a good day when they weren’t picked up by slavers or pimps and had a single good meal, let alone anything fun like escaping to nature for peace and quiet rather than fearing its wrath.
He walked outside with a roll of gauze to the group of children. Looking into the foremost boy’s eyes, he saw jaded knowledge that had no right to a body this young. Shane squatted down until he was eye level with the boy, never breaking that gaze as if to say: Yes, I see you. I can’t undo what you’ve been through. I can only promise that the sun will bring a new day. He slowly reached his hand out in an effort to examine boy’s left cradled against his chest. The blood had dried and crusted against his thin frame, ghastly outlining the frail body and accenting the shadows between his ribs. “Can I see it? I want to help. I want to fix this.” He nodded at the arm as he spoke. He hadn’t learned a lick of Sinhala or Hindi, but just speaking seemed to sooth the kids and himself.
The dried blood crinkled, cracked, and flaked as the child slowly pulled the arm away from his chest. From the screaming endorphins his 6th sense picked up, he guessed the kid had broken both the radius and ulna…probably scrambling through a rubble heap. There wasn’t anything his powers could do in a situation like this, adding any more hormones to the firestorm raging in this boy would probably send him into shock. Shane was just a normal doctor, doing his best to fix the world with what he had.
