Thread Roulette: Emiko and Nykhol

The tapping of her manicured nails on the keyboard had been almost nonstop since she'd arrived to work in the morning. First there had been an unusually large number of new students that she'd had to enter into the system and then came the more difficult part of working them into the current schedule of classes. She'd been on the phone to schools across the country to get transcripts faxed in and passing messages along to other members of the faculty. This part of her job, monotonous as it might be, was easily her favorite. Anything that didn't involve actually interacting with the students or their family was okay in her opinion.

Nykohl was hardly what anyone would consider polite and her interpersonal skills were truly lacking, so thank goodness for dear old Uncle Claude. She didn't even want to think about where she'd be if it weren't for him.

A quick glance at the clock told Nyk that it was almost time for lunch. She finished typing up the notes for the newest weather manipulator and stretched her arms up over her head. The receptionist was looking forward to stretching her legs and getting away from the voices of annoying children for a while. A quick pause to switch the the phone to the answering system and Nykki pushed her chair back.

It was then that the door opened.

The blonde groaned audibly, only faintly relieved that it wasn't a whiny teenager standing in the doorway. She recognized Emiko only barely, having only met her in passing and with no real desire to interact with her. Nyk had no intentions of letting the other woman ruin her lunch break, however, and she stood up from her chair. "If you're looking for the time off request forms, they're in the top drawer of the filing cabinet." She pointed at it half-heartedly. "Leave it on my desk when you're done." Slinging her purse over her shoulder, she sidestepped her desk and stood in front of Emiko, waiting for her to move aside.

Emiko had very strange shift hours throughout the week. She was under the impression that the school was rotating her through to figure out which suited her best, and at the moment she was in during school hours instead of the graveyard shift. She preferred the graveyard shift, honestly, she could deal with disrespectful students and the like, but the respectful ones left her at a loss. They chatted with her, said hello, asked how she was, and other things that generally put her on the spot. Then, they got upset when she forgot their names. How could she remember so many? The staff seemed totally uninterested in her and remained distant; in the faculty lounge she normally ate her lunch standing up in the corner, half-heartedly listening to the murmur of voices and adding in her opinion when they called on it.

She did notice one thing whenever she walked amongst the students and staff. She saw many faces in the minds of everyone, faces they were afraid of, but a singular face that seemed to hover over many students and even some staff was the face of the receptionist, Nykohl. She seemed to look nice, but in the minds of students she was evil and scary and unpleasant to be around. Many likened her to a snake or a spider.

Normally this would deter people, but to Emiko this was like a beacon. She generally fit in with people who liked to avoid other people. It was like a bond of anti-social behavior. With that in mind, instead of heading to the staff lounge for lunch she took a turn and headed to the office, pausing to walk in the door quietly. She blinked as Nykohl directed her to the filing cabinet and shook her head, hastily forming sentences in her mind and converting them to English.

“I came to see... To see if you would like to take your lunch with me.” Emiko gave a weak smile before she looked down. “I, ah, don’t know many people. And I don’t normally... socialize.”
