In theory, Oberon should have been happy.
Ronnie said so that morning, as she was straightening her hair and blocking access to the sink in his bathroom. Oberon considered reabsorbing her, but then she just gave him a withering look, and he let her go back to what he was doing, at least until the very last minute where he could brush his teeth before leaving if he wasn't going to be late.
But she had made a point, and Oberon mulled it over as he sat, twisting leftover spaghetti from last night around his plastic fork. He should be happy. He was making enough money to support himself, have fun sometimes, and save for the future. He lived in a refurbished firehouse with his best friend. And he had a beautiful lady friend whom he saw fairly often and was almost certain considered him her boyfriend. That should be enough to make him happy, right?
The man took an overly-large bite of pasta, then looked over at his best friend. Jude had been there for him since they met, over a decade ago. With the exception of the time spent at college, they'd been roommates since the day they met. He trusted no one else like the other man.
Unfortunately, Jude was the reason he was unhappy, at the moment. Well, sort of.
The trainer had decided it was time he met Oberon's girlfriend. Oberon was resisting, as he was only mostly sure that he actually had a girlfriend. So whenever Rose did come over to their house (which wasn't often), he begged, pleaded, threatened, bribed, and whatever else he had to do to get Jude out of the house. And it had worked the first few times, but now Rose was also saying that she wanted to meet the roommate he talked so much about.
And Oberon wasn't about to let that happen. See, though the accountant found himself telling Rose just about everything about his life, he still hadn't mentioned a pretty major part, the part where he could make duplicates of himself. He was passing himself off as a non-meta, and it was starting to wear on him.
So what was he supposed to tell Jude, his best friend? "Sorry mate, you can't meet Rose because half the time you come home with some lingering power clinging to you, and when your students aren't very good at controlling their powers, you end up freezing the toaster or having your arm fall off. And I've kind of been lying about who and what I am, despite the fact that she has given no indication that she has anything against us, and is really a sweet and loving person."
Yeah, not too likely.
(Also, given the tension of the school at the moment, it was probably better if Rose didn't know he was a meta-human. Ever since Dr. Campbell was attacked, the staff had been on high alert. And he didn't want to drag his kind-of-sort-of girlfriend anywhere close to it. She was safer not knowing.)
But as Oberon stabbed his spaghetti idly, he wasn't thinking about that so much as the fact that he was a liar, and somehow that was going to be Jude's fault.
