Screams in the halls . . . (OPEN)

[Kessa Westwood]

It was Kessas second night at the school and her clothes from home still didn't arrive so one nice soul had left a new pair of PJ' on her bed for her.

In her new PJ's Kessa tried again to stay awake for the second night, but it was proving to be imposable, her eyes slowly closed and was asleep in no time flat.

There was blood on her hands, she was running scared from someone chasing her, her heart was beating through her throat it felt like as she continues to run until she is caught, the attacker plunging a knife into her chest.

Her screams could be heard echoing down the halls, she is tossing and turning . . .

Mayu was awake, and she didn't know why. Thoughts and dreams filled her head even when she tried to block them. It was confusing, disorienting. It seemed like she was everyone and no one. Her mind wasn't alone. That's when the screams started. May looked up from her journal, thoughts scribbled out on the page like a five year olds handwriting. She dropped it to the floor and moved along the halls, following the screams to the source. A small girl in her bed. Having nightmares.

She must be new..

Mayu instantly started shaking her, trying to wake the girl up to stop the screams. blood... help me. the incoherent thoughts of the dreamer where stuck in her mind like a bug in a spider's web. She kept shaking the girl so that the thoughts would stop going through her mind. Even if she had been at the school for years her power was unreliable, and most of the time uncontrolable.

She was still deep in the horrid dream when someone had started to shake her, she woke still screaming, her eyes opening the screams stop but in the fine line of being asleep and being awake was confusion with that she pushed the person with force not really meaning too it was just a reaction, like what happens at the doctors office when they tap your knee and it jerks even when you try not to make it move.

Kessa then started to check the area for blood, then it hit her that she just was in a dream, she relaxed abit yet now she was fearful that what she had seen in the dream would come true.
Reaching for the light switch she then notices a female in the room with her, she jumps back.
"WHO ARE YOU?" Kessa eyes searching the girl for answers "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!" she snapped at the new person in her room.

Mayu gasped, jumping back as the girl shoved her. Alright it didn't hurt, but she did stumble and fall on her butt. It was rude to hit someone who thought you might have been dying. Or being killed in some dramatic fashion. "I'm sorry! My name is Mayu... You were screaming." she looked up at the girl through thick bangs that obscured her eyes slightly. She looked much younger then she actually was; in her my melody pajamas and long hanging pigtails. Anyone could mistake her as a tall middle school student.

She offered a shaky smile before standing up and walking back over to the bed. "Are you alright? That was quite some dream you had!" May stood over the red headed girl and tried to look as nice as possible.

Kessa stared at the girl 'Mayu' as her heart still racing inside of her chest, her PJ's soaked in sweat, her long, red hair clung to her face.
"Mayu? What kind of name is that?" Kessa asked as she removed the hair from her face and pulled it into a ponytail, the evaporating sweat made her shiver as she quickly added "Screaming?"

In that same instant her dream replayed in her mind, the running, the being caught, the knife going into her chest, the scream, that bloody scream. She suddenly felt sick and faint, she leaned against the wall feeling exhausted as her eyes lowered.

"I'm sorry, sorry I didn't mean to snap at you, your right, I was screaming" she said as she continued to lean against the wall trying to keep from falling over.

Mayu smiled at the new girl, knowing how hard it was to have an ability you couldn't control. Feeling slightly like a mother she helped to support the obliviously weak girl. Man what she wouldn't give to be Ant right now, he'd know what to do. May shut her eyes against the thoughts and images racing back to her. "Please don't think about the dream, and Mayu just happens to be my name. But you can call me May, most people do." she offered Kessa a small smile, the name coming to her from the scared girls mind.

"It's alright, Kessa. Your scared, I totally understand. Do you have dreams like that often?" She pulled the blankets away from the little red head so she'd cool down more easily. Mayu was normally thoughtful that way, unlike most people at this school. But when you spent most of your days listening to people whine inside your mind, small things like this just made everything better. She patted Kessa's hand, trying to look as trusting as possible.

"So Kessa.. What grade are you in?"

Don't think of the dream? How could she not? she thought to herself. "A telepath? like that movie scanners?" she asked with a questioning look on her face. grade? it was lost in her jumble of thoughts.

Kessa was at a loss as she sat back down on the bed and May helped her with blankets "Thank you May" she softly replied as she pulled from under her pillow a suede leather book with a purple string about it, another purple string with a heart on the end of it could be seen hanging from the bottom, some post its stuck out of it and a pen was stuck inside of it. Kessa opened it and wrote down the dream before she forgot about, but this one she would not forget for a long time, it would be hard for her to shake it from her being.

After writing in the book she closed it and looked back to May "So what is it like to be a telepath? Do you hear all thoughts? how do you control it?" and before she forgot "I am Kessa but you knew that already, right?"

May offered another smile at the girl, hoping she was just asking in order to distract herself from the dream. At times like this, being an empath would be easier. Or maybe be able to manipulate moods, now that would be the best power ever. She crossed her legs, wishing she could brew tea to calm the girl down further.

"It's hard to explain. I'm a low grade telepath, so I'm not as good as others. But I can read surface thoughts constantly, and I can see deeper into your mind with skin contact. I've been practicing transmitting thoughts into other peoples minds but it only seems to work with other telepaths unless your stronger. Control comes with experience, like with your power."

She patted Kessa's arm comfortingly. "I knew your name, but that's about all. So Kessa, how long have you been at the school?" she took a mental note of the notebook, hoping to get back to her own to write down this nice little piece of info.

Kessa listened intently, it was interesting to say the least. she could not help but wondered what the girl could see in her, that thought sent her skin crawling. Shifting her weight in the bed as a loud sigh came from her she looked at May "Here? two days, how about you? you seem pretty settled here."
Kessa was still exhausted, she had not had a good nights sleep since the kidnappers capture and it showed as she would continuously yawn, sigh and wipe her eyes.

"I am so sorry May, I am so tired but I fear each time I fall asleep I'll see something bad happen, so I try so hard not to fall asleep" Kessa made a slight chuckle towards May "Like those nightmare on elm street movies" she said as she nervously played with the blanket that covered her lap.

Mayu laughed, settled was not a word she would use to describe her position at the school. With another smile she settled into the girls bed, pulling up her knees against her chest. "This is my third year here, but my brother's been here about six." she noticed the girls yawn and nodded her head in agreement, it was indeed late enough to be willing to pass out easily.

"I hate horror movies, my brother and his little friends are always watching them trying to scare me. I guess I should get used to it but some of them are just so disgusting!" May yawned herself now before laughing, bangs falling into her face as her head bobbed. "You know, the nurses probably have something to help that. Not to mention we have dream walkers and that like to help you out. You just need to make the right friends!"

'we have dream walkers' her head cocking slightly to one side as she stopped mid yawn, her eyes widening with interest, she asked Mayu "Dream walkers? what can they do? Do you really think they could help me?" to the mention of the nurse and drugs she replied "No, no drugs I don't want to be put out and not be able to wake up on my own, but thank you for the suggestion" she put her hand the girls knee as she said that, just as a friendly jester.

Kessa wanted more information about these dream walkers, who were they? when could meet them? She needed to learn control and fast, she could not stay awake forever, it was already taking a great toll on her as it was.

Mayu smiled, eyes twitching at the uninvited contact. It was alright when she started it, but without warning the thoughts rushing to her could be hell. "Kessa, I know you want to know. Please calm down. I think Dream Walkers might be able to help you. From what I know they can change people's dreams with subconscious messages. But that being said a manipulator could do the same.. We only have one or two dream walkers right now, I don't know them personally. If you want to meet them talk to your mentor about your sleep problems. If you don't have a mentor yet, mine might be able to help you out."she pressed a hand to her forehead, feeling the days activities starting to wear on her mind. it might not be such a good idea to stop sleeping in order to write in her journal. May yawned loudly, stretching against her new friends bed. "And if you need someone to keep you up at nights, meet Ant. He's up at all hours of the night!"

It was true Kessa was excited and she could help that now knowing that there was others that could help her with her dreams, well nightmares was more like it. Calm down? How could she? She just had a dream that someone attacked her and stabbed her in the chest, was this dream going to come true? or was it simply another nightmare? To Kessa her very life was on the line until she could fine out what the visions in her dream really meant to her.

After Mayu yawned so did she "You know yawns are contagious, do you want to stay here tonight? I think the others are with friends, haven't seen them at all yet." she asked her as she flexed her arms and cracked her knuckles.

With a sigh Kessa wanted to know more about her new friend so she asked her "So when did you find out about your ability?" she laid against the wall throwing a pillow behind her back as she listened to Mayu's reply.

Mayu smiled at the girl, giggling when she said yawns were contagious. It seemed so true right now. Kessa seemed like such a fun, sweet girl; at least she did when she was tired. Everything seemed better when she was tired. Normally she was calm but whenever she was tired-or Ant was around-she seemed to get a huge dose of hyper-active crazy. “Sure I’ll stay here! My friend sort of dumped me and went out.. Somewhere. Besides, it’s better than being alone!” she giggled again, a thought coming into her mind about the boogie man. It was her own thought, her own crazy thought.

“I discovered mine around the age of 13.. That’s when Kent and Ant adopted me. School has been really fun, if it weren’t for me being such a social outcast; something that my brother has tried to fix. So what about you? What’s your family like?” May rambled on before finally coming to a close, her speech slightly speed through and high pitched. This is what happened when she got so tired.

It was a relief when Mayu said that she would stay with her tonight, she so hated being alone at night, sleeping, dreaming....

Kessa tried to stifle a yawn but was unsuccessful at it, her eyes closed slightly, her head drooping before she suddenly opened her eyes and attempted to focus on Mayu.

"Family? I have two older sisters" she said in a clearly sleepy tone of voice followed by another yawn that she again fought against.

Kessa was noticeably failing at her attempts to stay awake "I am so sorry, I am so exhausted tired but can you do me a favor? Please its important . . . wake me up if it looks like I am dreaming" her voice pleading with Mayu, her half closed eyes seemed to cast the same plea to the girl across from her.

She placed the pillow at the top of the bed and then pointed to the empty bed next to her "You can stay there, I don't think the girl is coming back tonight" she said as she got under her blankets and before laying her head down she asked Mayu once more to wake her if she should happen to look like if she were dreaming.
