It had taken her a long time and more than two rounds of getting lost, but finally, Courtney managed to find her dorm room, pushing the door open and sighing deeply, looking around. The room was a bit small and blank, which felt just perfect. Her bags were already in the room somehow, not that she even knew how or who had brought them, and her presently unnamed ant farm was already in the window, with small red ants scurrying around in a nervous fashion. She felt the same way.
"Welcome to nothing you've ever known." Courtney said to herself, sitting down on her bed and putting her thumb to the glass of the window. "I'm sure you girls are just terribly excited as well." The ants ignored her, as per usual, and Courtney stared out of the window.
It looked nice here, middle of nowhere Vermont, surrounded by trees and a feeling of just creeping air. It was cold here too, but the feeling hadn't really set in, the feeling of not being at home. At any moment, she fully expected to see her cousins burst into her room or for her hair to start fluffing up from the humidity. Being up North really hadn't made its impression, but it would.
"What on earth am I going to do?" Courtney asked the open air, flopping backwards onto the bed and exhaling loudly. " 'M easily lost and totally confused and talking to myself... At least I have unsympathetic ants for company."
Oh yeah. She had roommates. Sitting up, Courtney looked out of her door toward the common room, narrowing her eyes. She wanted to go out and maybe wait for them, but what if they didn't come? Or worse, what if they didn't like her? Courtney had already met November, who seemed friendly enough, but she hadn't made the best of impressions. What if she did even worse with the other two?
Fiddling with the belt loop on her pants, Courtney looked back at her open bag. It was so small and it fit with the room, fit with her. A quick glance around and Courtney noticed a spiderweb in the corner. As insignificant as it was, it was enough to get Courtney out into the common room, just to explore a little.
Hands in her pockets, she spun around and looked at the room, spotting something shiny on the floor. Squatting down to take a look, Courtney discovered a penny, heads up. With a hint of a grin, she picked it up and slipped it into her pocket. It was a good sign, some good luck for this new place. Maybe she could tape it to her wall... That was, if whoever lost it didn't want it back. In that case, she would happily return it. She really didn't want to make enemies over a penny.
Standing back up, something fluttered past her, and Courtney smiled, feeling cheered.
"Hey, c'mere." Courtney said, trying to see what was in the room with her, trying to focus on her voice. "Buzz buzz I have wings." she murmured, closing her eyes. "Listen to me, prove that there's a reason I came here..." The lightest of tickling touches and Courtney cracked one eye open, looking at the unassuming brown moth on her shirt. "Cool. Hi."
She had gotten a moth to land on her and found a penny. Normal things, for sure, but maybe for Courtney, this was a sign. Maybe today, she could successfully meet her roommates.
And all the day you'll have good luck.
