Courtney woke up at the same time she did every morning, rolling over and pulling her face out of the pillow with a slight frown. She had no idea why, but something seemed a little bit odd. Something always seemed a bit odd though, so she pushed it out of her head and proceeded to get up, shaking out her hair. Pressing it flat with her hands, Courtney smiled to herself and then yawned, looking around the room. Why was everything so odd? She couldn't put her finger on it, but something was very very strange. Maybe it was the fact that her room had suddenly stopped being so chilly. She didn't know why, but it always seemed borderline too cold in the dorm rooms. Good thing that had stopped.
"Should probably get dressed." Courtney muttered to herself, still flattening her hair. She was getting more and more self conscious about her hair, and it was actually starting to bother her. "Should probably brush stupid hair before getting dressed..." Muttering nonsense syllables under her breath, Courtney took a moment to find a shirt without wrinkles and then slipped on her favorite pair of jeans. "So, what is wrong today..." The crickets were chirping very loudly that morning, and Courtney wondered why they were all so excited. Maybe they knew what had changed.
Pressing her ear to the window, Courtney listened to the chirps quickly. They were loud, but for some reason, she couldn't understand them over the noise. Actually, it sounded like almost nothing at all, like just bugs screeching. And that did not happen. People didn't just go around screaming, and bugs did not just go around rubbing their legs and wings together just for the sake of making noise. It didn't make sense. Maybe... Had something changed about her? Because that would be bad, change would be very, very bad, worse than she could imagine. Courtney reacted very poorly to change.
"Maybe I just turned it off." Courtney muttered to herself, pulling at the hem of her shirt. "Yeah, that's it, I just turned of listening to crickets, they never say anything important anyways, just gossip and grass, that's it. I just don't care enough to listen, I don't care enough to listen that's all." She bit her bottom lip and twisted her pinkies together, only very slightly worried. "I should... I should just go out to the courtyard and do something... No no, I should go to the library, yes, the library will fix this." Grabbing her wallet and a jacket, just in case it was colder in the library than in the dorm, Courtney carefully twisted her doorknob and made her way into the common area, looking for a notebook she was sure she had dropped. After that, it was straight to the library to ignore reality in favor of fiction. At least, that was the plan.
Just as Courtney thought she saw the notebook, something else caught her attention. There was a slight flickering in the corner of her eye and as she turned, she noticed something very very strange. Her hand was on fire. It didn't hurt, it was barely even hot, but her hand was certainly on fire. Even though that took a moment to process, Courtney understood the obvious next step very quickly.
"AHHHHHHH!" Courtney screamed, not caring that other people might be trying to sleep as she shook her arm quickly, to no avail. "Someone! Ah! I need a fire extinguisher, ah, ahh!" Apparently, humans did just scream sometimes. This was probably going to be embarrassing when her arm stopped being on fire."Fire fire fiiire!"
