The shutter clicked and Nikolai’s world stopped, at least for a few seconds. Nikolai smiled at the moment he’d captured- the afternoon sun lit the surroundings, the mountains were off in the distance, and the grass painted the immediate background. His subject was a nameless face with black hair and brown eyes. She was giggling in the picture while walking with another nameless girl. Their walking blurred the picture a bit, but it did not seem to occur to Niko. The picture dissolved seconds later and the camera showed the movement of the world in front of it again as Niko laid on his chest in the grass. He was wearing his favorite button-up red, white and black short sleeved shirt with a very worn-looking pair of light blue jeans. His hair was its usual unkempt mess of dark brown topped with bright blond, while his expression was one of contentment when he had stopped smiling at the picture. A few roughhousing teenage boys moved into view- one shoved another. Niko clicked the button before hearing the familiar click. He caught the same background as with the girls, but the subject was balling his fists and yelling at the boy as Niko’s camera froze.
Niko smiled again and raised his gaze to take in the parts of his surroundings that his camera could not see. Teens walked around or lounged lazily- some in pairs, some in larger groups. Some fought amongst themselves; some enjoyed a snack in the grass, all while the nine year old remained at the edge of the courtyard, silently observing all that was around him. With the bells of classes having ceased for the remainder of the evening, the mood was more relaxed.
During the time that he’d been outside in the courtyard, plenty of well-meaning people had approached Niko- an unfamiliar face, a kid so young that he seemed to be in a minority, surely he would be an interesting person to talk to. Was he a kid living in the houses nearby who'd come to see a sibling? Was he lost? They’d all acted cheerful and friendly, telling him their names and assuring him that they could be friends, as though to do so would be a great service to him. Niko got the impression that they thought he was five, not nine. And after he nervously told them his name was Niko and that he was happy to have friends, they felt the need to walk away not long after with some excuse or other, as if his apparent shy nature was too uncomfortable for them.
Niko was not bothered in the least by their departure- contrary, he preferred that they leave opposed to him having to speak to a stranger any longer. At least, he told himself that until they really did leave. Once they were gone, the silence could play the role of his companion. Then Nikolai was not eager to be alone at all. Even so, he called to no one. He just looked to his camera at such moments as he was doing at that precise moment, waiting for something worth catching, some person, some movement, who happened to move in the square his lens took in.
Niko felt closer to the people around him when he took their picture, when he shared even one moment of their lives with them, and closeness was essential, which was the reason that there was a zoom feature on his camera. The only downside was, when someone came up to him, they blocked the view entirely. He had a chance to very thoroughly examine the stitching on a denim pant leg, though, if nothing else. Overall, he would have said that the day had gone pretty well, especially since he wasn't thrust into the classes on the first day. No, he had been allowed to get settled in the dorm for the past hour since his arrival, and now he was just enjoying the freedom while he could.
