Courtney laid back in the grass, feeling the blades brush against her arms and lower back where her t-shirt had ridden up. It was finally, blissfully warm, a freak heat wave that meant that she wasn't shivering any longer, that the sun was shining and that she could finally take a deep breath without the cold weighing down her lungs. She could hear a few other students darting around, having fun and she just tried to lay very still and relish the light, warm air. A faint breeze blew past and Courtney sighed, feeling content as she looked upwards and into that bright blue sky.
"Days like this make it worth being here." Courtney muttered to herself, stretching. The sun was just behind her and she could look up, only squinting a little. "So calm..." She knew she was most likely only jinxing herself, but it was so nice. There were clouds drifting through the sky, and as she looked at them, Courtney began one of her favorite games.
She looked from cloud to cloud until she found one that struck her, one with an interesting shape or just one that looked especially sturdy, looking for something that made it unique. Cloud shapes were almost an art form for her, a pure art shaped by her imagination and the whim of the wind.
Courtney's eyes locked on a cloud that looked like a toy train, with an engine and smokestack that was comically curved, and watched as the cars flattened together, giving it the appearance of a slightly flattened whale. Maybe it was something about the way that clouds never stayed the same that made her like them, that delightful ephemeral quality. The cloud then proceeded to flatten further into a strip of bacon, or maybe a wave motion cannon that had just been fired.
"And we'll all float on okay." Courtney half whispered, half sang to herself, watching the cloud bunch up into a Barbie doll. "And we'll all float on alright already we'll all float on..." Clouds were such great things, really. And as Courtney watched the now paper lantern trek across the sky, she tried to just soak in the moment and enjoy the day.
