The Basics
Name: Kaerie Anne Gage
Nicknames: Kae; Kaer; Kaer-bear (very rarely used)
Age: 22
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Nurse Practitioner for Hammel
Powers: Biological Manipulation – Pain/Injury Absorption. Kaerie is able to telepathically draw pain away from others, be it emotional or the physical sensation of pain, and transfer it to herself. She is also able to absorb the physical injuries of others, but this must be done with physical contact; VERY few people know of this portion of her power.

The Details
Hair Color: Blonde
Eye Color:Hazel, leaning towards brown
Any Piercings? Ears
Any Tattoos? Nope
Any Scars? Innumerable little ones, though most of them shouldn’t be her own; and one large one (see Appearance).
General Appearance:
Kaerie isn’t an unattractive young woman, it’s just that…well, she’s easy to miss. Despite being relatively tall (5’8”) and blonde, she is pretty in a girl-next-door way that lets her blend into the crowd. For those who take a closer look, the first thing most people notice is the multitude of scars, everywhere from relatively small to almost imperceptible, that cover her body. The reason she typically wears tennis shoes, though, is the one major scar she has, which is located on her left foot. It is a thick, 2-inch line that runs length-wise along the top of her foot, with a matching line on the sole.
What most people notice, however, is Kaerie’s hair. Loose golden curls are her trademark style, but on occasion she’ll straighten it just to have something different. During the summer, the sun tends to bring out just a hint of strawberry blonde. In contrast to her light hair, Kaerie’s eyes are a dark hazel that gets a hint of green and gold in the sunlight. Though her eyesight isn’t too bad, she does need glasses, though typically wears contacts. There seems to always be a slight upward turn at the corners of her lips, which every so often give her a look reminiscent of Mona Lisa.
Style is most definitely not Kaerie’s forte. While she isn’t a complete disaster, she spends most of her time in jeans and a fitted t-shirt. Occasionally the shirts will be of one of her favorite bands, a joke, but most often it is a plain, solid-colored shirt or polo. Blue tends to be the favored color in her closet, with neutrals dominating the rest. Despite this, she always looks presentable, verging on chic, on a night out…provided she decides to put some effort in. Her one fashion talent, however, is an uncanny gift with makeup. Kaerie can make anyone’s eyes pop, cheekbones strong and high, and neck slender.
Personality:
Kaerie is, in all things really, easily overlooked. She was never at the top of her class, despite wrangling her Nurse Practitioner’s degree in a little less than 5 years. Generally only speaking when spoken to, she keeps to herself in most things which can make her hard to get to know. Though her healing power is pretty self-evident, she keeps the full extent of it from most students at Hammel. The majority of the students only see the pain and injuries being taken away from them, but never the emotional pain or injuries being transferred.
The Kaerie that her friends see is often bright and bubbly, not to mention a little goofy. She has a deep love of Disney movies and singing, and has even managed to teach herself guitar. Piano is her next challenge. Her empathetic nature doesn’t stop just at her power, and she is often a confidant for those she cares about or takes an interest in. The mixture of her gift and her constant caring nature is what led her to be a nurse, and the fact that she isn’t in the least bit squeamish helps, too. She tries very hard to see the different sides of every argument, and isn’t afraid to try something new. Friends and family are the most important things in her life and she does her best to do everything to take care of them, even to the point of hiding her full gift.
This does not, however, make her a martyr. Because she hides her pain, Kaerie has many self-destructive habits and is currently taking daily anti-depressants. On a bad day, you can find her in the bar after work drinking screwdrivers. Really bad day, and it’ll be straight vodka with cranberry juice chaser. During her teenage years she went through a period of self-injurious behavior, sometimes intentionally taking the wounds of others and sometimes inflicting wounds upon herself. The faculty discovered this, and she was sent to a therapist whom she now sees once every two weeks. Since then she has had a number of abusive and/or toxic relationships, though she is currently single at her therapist’s advice.

History
BEFORE
Life started for Kaerie Anne Gage in Evanston, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. Her life was pretty typical of a middle-class suburban family, both parents working and attending daycare during her younger years. Her mother tended to be a little removed, and Kaerie learned quickly that if she wanted attention that her mother was not the one to ask. Before long, her younger brother Dalton came along and the two cared for one another when their parents could not or would not, despite their 5 year age difference. Weekends were often spent with her father as her mother worked as a nursing assistant especially on Fridays and Saturdays, and this is how she learned to bake cookies.
Baking cookies, actually, was how Kaerie first discovered her power. On August 15th, 1999, one month and two days after her eleventh birthday, Kaerie was baking cookies with one of her friends, Jen, for Dalton’s birthday the next day. Jen was chopping up a candy bar as Dalton’s favorite cookies were chocolate chunk, when she accidentally dropped the knife she was using. The blade pierced her foot all the way through, and Kaerie rushed to her friend’s side to see what had happened, grasping Jen’s hand. Before the two young girl’s very eyes, the cut started healing, only a tear in her sock and a ring of blood remaining as proof of what had just occurred.
Then, Jen pointed out the pool of blood forming around Kaerie’s left foot, her formerly white sock stained crimson.
AFTER
Exactly two weeks after the incident in the kitchen, Kaerie found herself enrolled at Hammel Institute. Her family learned of the crippling pain she was burdened with, but never knew that the knife she had dropped on her foot never really did, but had actually been Jen’s wound. Kaerie’s family still does not know of the extra aspect of her power, and Jen is the only one of her friends to know that she is gifted at all. Through this secret bond the two became nearly immediate best friends and remain so today, despite there being a few thousand miles and a number of time-zones between them. Only crucial faculty members and extremely close friends know of her power, most of whom have left Hammel before she returned as a Nurse Practitioner. Since her discovery, Kaerie’s power has grown significantly in proportion to her control. Initially she was unable to keep the pain of others from invading her mind and thoughts, but aside from the very first event she wouldn’t absorb anything more serious than a scrape or bruise involuntarily. Now that she can (most of the time) filter out the emotional static bombarding her constantly, she is able to take on more serious injuries in whole or in part, but never enough to kill her.
Roleplay Example
(Taken from another site, I can provide the url if you like but I’m planning on starting him up on here once I get the knack of things anyway =])
To say that Noah was angry would be an understatement. To say why would be impossible.
The hot, familiar California sun beat down on a lean, tan forearm as it hung absently down the side of a bright yellow cutlass. The wind whipped past at, according to the speedometer, 65 miles per hour. Long, thick fingers wrapped around the steering wheel, working the leather and making it groan. Small trees and scrub flashed by at what Noah considered to be a pretty slow rate. The ocean, thirty feet down from the road cut into the high cliff, glinted as if it were a sea of diamonds. The shrieks of sea birds filled the air, and the young man watched as one dove down into the sea, disappeared below the surface, and came back up with its glittering prize in its beak.
A loud honk and a quick swerve later, Noah glanced into his rear-view mirror just in time to see the driver of the minivan he almost sideswiped stick his hand out the window and give him the one-finger salute. "Asshole," he muttered absently before turning his eyes back to the road ahead. Letting his mind wander once again, he found himself thinking about his mother. Seven more years and she'll be out, he realized.
It was a bitter-sweet feeling, knowing that the drunk who had gone off the booze just long enough to give birth to him would be free. He hated his mother with a passion for all of the things she had done to him, and continued to do to him in his dreams and memories. Still, though, he couldn't help but love her. Her parents had screwed her up just as much as she had damaged him. Then again, Uncle Robert wasn't that bad and Aunt Kate had been practically normal.
The fact that he had used the past tense in conjunction with his Aunt for the first time hit him like a brick wall. It hadn't even been a week since he had gotten the call from his sobbing cousin--had it been Bre or Amanda? He couldn't remember-- and already Kate was past tense. Noah felt a heat behind his eyes that was growing almost familiar as of late, and swallowed with a strength that made his throat hurt. He wasn't going to cry over her, she had made his life hell. Even if it was only because she loved him. There you go again! Past tense! his mind screamed, and he even jumped a little because of the force of his thoughts.
His eyes zeroed in on the two unbroken lines ahead of him, a little to his left. The thrum of tires on asphalt calmed his mind as it always did, but 65 wasn't quite enough today. Slowly the needle on Noah's speedometer started inching toward 80 mph as he tried for the thousandth time in vain to outrun his history, pain, and demons.
