The Basics
Name: Jethro Augustus Harker
Nicknames: His step-mother and little sister called him 'Auggie' but it is very unlikely that you are either of them so don't try it.
Age: 17
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers: Short range magnokinesis, when he focuses he can alter the ambient magnetic fields around his body enabling him to move and shape the various metals around him. His effective range is usually limited to his immediate person but can be increased if he concentrates hard enough. Certain metals, such as lead and gold, do not respond to his powers. Due to his powers, he is very careful about touching tapes. Thankfully, modern computers are actually immune to magnetic fields, apart from actual physical damage that is. Also, if he is not careful, he can rupture cells in his body by accidentally pulling the iron from them. Other side effects include migraines and nausea on days when solar wind hits the Earth's magnetosphere, an inability to use MRIs, wide-spread numbness when over exerting his powers and a tendency to unconsciously face magnetic north.

The Details
Hair Color: Dark brown

Any Piercings? No, does not like needles
Any Tattoos? Seriously, no needles if he can help it
Any Scars? Nick in his left eyebrow, a couple of what look like burn scars on his right palm and arm, an old wound just below his left armpit and the usual assorted marks of a lifetime.
General Appearance: Jethro is... well Jethro. His mop of brown hair is usually in some state of disarray if he has not recent had it cut back to a manageable length. His hair is the only thing that really ever looks messy though. He has excellent posture and dresses like a man thirty years his senior. That is not to say he is all starched white shirts and ties though. He simply looks a little old fashioned, no saggy pants or studded belts for him.
His usual attire in the summer usually consists of a series of light dress shirts in a range of colors and jeans or cargo pants. As the weather cools off he usually dawns a beat up old leather jacket or sports coat and a sweater of some kind. In the winter he breaks out an ancient and often repaired olive green, army surplus overcoat.
He stands at an even six feet and is rather well built from leading a very active life. This can lead him to look a little intimidating, especially since he usually looks a little more annoyed than he actually is. Of course, if you get him talking, he will almost always crack a smile and become a much more animated person.
Personality: At first glance, Jethro appears to be a consummate misanthrope and grump, but in reality his is something of an optimist. Not that he would ever admit it, of course. What might strike most as grumpiness and misanthropy is actually a healthy sense of pragmatism. He is a blunt and practical in most matters, usually attempting to avoid conflict, especially when he is the cause of it. Unless he is truly angry, he rarely engages in arguments, stating that arguments have never solved anything. That is not to say he always avoids conflict. If there is one major defining characteristic of Jethro's personality that you'd need to know, it is his peculiarly strong sense of right and wrong and that he will gladly create conflict if he thinks something is wrong. He rarely suffers displays of arrogance gladly and refuses to violate his own code of ethics.
This might paint a picture of a uniquely humorless individual with weird tastes. To the contrary, humor is a favorite tool of his. He finds it is a great way to get to know people and diffuse conflict and, well, it feels good to laugh. He also has a soft spot for kids, having a lot of his big brotherly instincts still intact. In the end, Jethro likes to keep people guessing. Everyone has their layers and Jethro is no exception.

History
Jethro is an army brat. Born to Sergent Andrew Harker and his wife Emily on an unseasonably warm twenty ninth of January. His father was stationed at numerous bases during Jethro's early life meaning they moved around the world a lot. If asked where he grew up, Jethro will often respond 'On Earth'. It was not the most ideal environment to bring a young boy up in but Sarge was determined to make the best of it and Emily was not about to abandon him so they both worked to give young Jethro everything he could want in life and it worked for a time.
August 2001, when Jethro was seven, he lost his mother in a scuba diving accident off the coast of Australia. Her body was recovered a week later by fishermen. A small, closed casket ceremony was held. Jethro was nearly catatonic for about a week. He never demanded an explanation or cried about it. A year later, Sarge and Jethro were transferred to Japan, living on base in Okinawa. Jethro had become very withdrawn since the death of his mother. Sarge made a habit of drinking off base so that Jethro would not see him drowning his lingering feelings of guilt and helplessness over Emily's death.
He met Chisato at a bar he frequented. Please note, the word 'met' when used here actually means he gave a couple of privates who had been harassing her the bum's rush. Chisato was the daughter of the owner of the bar. Soon enough he was stopping by there more and more often all while drinking less and less. Chisato barely spoke a word of English and Sarge spoke even less Japanese, yet despite this he managed to get her to start liking him, probably by being just the right combination of charming and awkward. He started bringing Jethro with him on these little excursions. Chisato was positively charmed by the serious little boy who gradually began to come out of his shell and helped around the bar as best he could.
One thing led to another, of course, and Jethro and Sarge were about transferred to California but not before Sarge proposed to Chisato. By the time the newly formed family had settled down in Fort Irwin, Jethro was back out of his shell and the family was about to grow by one. Michiko was born on a sunny day in May 2003. After meeting his little sister for the first time, Jethro turned to his father and demanded they get a 'big scary dog' to help him keep his sister safe. Boss entered the family a month later.
Sarge got a desk job so he could stay in one place for a while, Chisato opened a sake bar and Jethro and Boss kept a watchful eye on Michiko. Jethro picked up some interesting pass-times to keep himself busy and to 'Prepare for the day when I need to start scaring away Michiko's suitors'.
Things were good for a long time until Jethro's powers manifested at the age of fourteen. Sores began to appear on his arm and he began to complain of migraine headaches and nausea. The sores were spreading quickly as tissue turned necrotic and the migraines got worse with time. Fearing a tumor or something similar, Jethro was put through a battery of tests all with inconclusive results. Then the put him in the MRI and turned it on. The device promptly started tearing itself apart, with Jethro inside of it. A chunk of which got him good in the ribs, just below his armpit.
That was when a representative of the Hammel Institute showed up and explained the situation. Soon Jethro was whisked away from Sarge, Chisato, Michiko and Boss.
Roleplay Example
“Oliver, yet again, we find ourselves abandoned by our employer,” said a tallish man carrying an undue amount of curly, brown hair around his head and an irritatingly easygoing expression on his face.
“Seems that way,” the other man, apparently Oliver, replied with a more dour expression. He had far tamer dark blonde locks drawn into a short ponytail and was a few inches shorter than his comrade. From the expression on his face it was obvious he was in no mood for witty banter.
“I would be less incensed about our situation if the rat had not left us during such a time of need," the taller of the two continued, either failing to notice or care about his companion's foul mood.
“Wizards,” Oliver said and spat into the dust at their feet. You could never trust wizards as far as you could throw them, especially the ones that lacked any kind of substantial reputation along with their name. Lack of funds and food had forced the pair into such an undesirable situation. It was not the first time their hands had been forced in such a way and it would be far from the last as well.
“You seem abnormally terse my friend.”
“Forgive me, Otis, I rarely feel chatty with enough good Balkish steel pointed at me to stretch from here back to King's Tower.” The two men stood back to back on a dusty little road that lead through gently waving wheat fields on rolling hills. It might have been a rather picturesque scene. Two brothers-in-arms enjoying a peaceful journey into a future of infinite opportunities... Expect for the Balkish patrol surrounding Otis and Oliver and the previously mentioned steel ready to do any number of unpleasant things to them.
