Tricky little memories ((OPEN!))

[Olivia Murphy]

Olivia needed to practice her gifts... but she couldn't really practice on herself, her and Brooklyn were at odds again, which left the population of Hammel at her bidding. Dragging one of the tables in the student lounge to face the door and two chairs she quickly made it look like a desk complete with a little sign in front of it.

Taking a seat Olivia pulled out a note book and started working on some homework hoping she wouldn't have to wait to long. Surely there were a few students on campus that wanted to relive some moment in their life. On that note she quickly drew out a second sign.

She nodded, that was better. Picking up her notebook again she waited.

[Jethro Harker]

Jethro shuffled in, looking a little rough around the edges today. His morning classes were rarely kind to him and that much showed through even his usual layer of aloofness. He had an hour before the next one rolled around so it was time to crash on one of the couches and indulge in some rest.

He walked right past Olivia's little desk, unslinging his messenger bag as he moved, and over to claim one of the couches in front of the TV. He laid down, put his feet up on the arm and closed his eyes. They were shut for a handful of seconds before they snapped back open and he sat bolt upright. He smacked his face once of twice and blinked his eyes quickly, trying to wake up some and process what he had just seen.

"Okay," he said to himself and stood back up. This time when he walked with a purpose back to Olivia's memory enhancement station. He gave the redhead a long, hard, look, then switched his attention to her sign and then back to her. It was obvious words were percolating in his head but with his current state it was uncertain just how long they would take to get to his mouth.

He sat down in front of the desk, "So, what do you want?" he asked Olivia.

Olivia watched the boy come in, he seemed about ready to fall over. She dismissed him easily returning to her homework until he stood before her once again. She had to admit a desire to laugh at his disheveled appearance, he certainly looked like he needed her help more than a few. Smiling when he sat down she laid her hands on the table palm up. She had to focus on her English to get her accent to tone down a pinch or two so the lad would understand her. "Well, ye be needin to take my hands, Tink hard on what tis ye want ta remember. Or jus a general time. When a flash of what ya be wantin to remember comes focus on it. You'll has control of what ye be rememberin or not I'm just a catalyst. I will be havin ta stop ya after 1 minute... I can't last longer den that. But worry not I don't be seeing what you remembering, tis for your minds eyes only." She kept her hands out to see if the boy was still interested. She certainly hoped he would, she rather liked to help someone that needed her help.

It took a minute for his sleep deprived brain to navigate through her accent. It was hard to do when his brain was both distracting by the pretty young lady and whether or not he should actually be doing this. He took a long breath and shook the distractions from his mind, borrowing a meditation technique from his training to focus through the weariness he felt.

It was up to his mind, if he wasted his focus, he would end up remembering some insignificant thing in perfect clarity. Tentatively, he reached out and touched her hands with his. He immediately tried to focus on his mother, her brown hair, her smile, something, anything.

If there was any one thing Jethro wanted to remember it was his mother's face, her real face. Every time he tried the only thing that rose in his mind was the bloated, water-logged corpse the fishermen had hauled out of the sea. His father had tried to keep him from seeing it but Jethro had dodged under his grasp in the desperate hope of seeing her again.

Olivia watched him thinking and smiled. What is was about him exactly that was keeping her entertained she wasn't sure. The dazed sleepiness that seemed to cloud his face, the hesitancy he seemed to show regarding her offer, or the mild confusion on her accent. Either way Olivia was glad he'd taken her challenge. Grasping his hands loosely she closed her eyes and focused. To be honest she couldn't completely tell if her gift was working or not. She had to rely on those around her to confirm if she'd managed to bring their memories to a sharper point. The only hint of her putting her gift to use was the pressure that seemed to build in the base of her skull. It was a pressure that increased the longer she grasped his hands until at a little over a minute Olivia let go. "I be sorry, dats all I can be doi'n" She gave him a tired smile and rubbed her neck.

"Did ye fin what ye were' looki'n fer perhaps?" Olivia watched his face. She certainly hoped she hadn't wasted the guys time, but every chance is a chance to practice she supposed and an opertunity to meet someone new. "Namez Olivia by da way."

[Jethro Harker]

The dazed, sleepy face was gone now, replaced with a sudden and frightful intensity as he fought his own psyche. Trying to work through years of reinforced memory to try and reach those that were buried behind them, his brow furrowed and his lips drew themselves into a thin, bloodless line. Whatever was going on in his head could not be pleasant.

When she let go of his hands he sat back, letting out a slow breath. He was wide awake now, the intensity that had overtaken his feature drifting away to a more distant, thoughtful look. "No," he answered, "I guess some things can't be brought back." If Jethro was difficult to read normally, now the inside of his head was a complete enigma.

He brought his attention back to the present and he remembered his manners. "I'm Jethro, ah, Jethro Harker," he said, offering his hand for a shake. Hopefully her powers were not automatically triggered by physical contact. Some of the Metas at Hammel were like that and became very careful about touching people.

Olivia frowned. "Oy.. I'm sorry. M'fraid my power ain't as particular as I be wan'in it ta be." She gave him a shrug. "If ye be wan'in we can try 'gain in an hour or so." At the very least he was more awake now and she figured that was well worth the moment's he'd spent here at her table. Olivia glanced at her watch it's taken her about a minute an a half, her endurance was defiantly getting better. His hand extended out to her and she gave one of her best smiles as she took it. "Nice pleasure ta be meet'n ya, agai'n be sorry I a'nt able ta helpz ya more."

Olivia opened her note book and took her signs down tucking them inside. There was now way she could support doing another sitting for quite a while. Better to take the table down and put it back up when she was ready than risk offending someone with making them wait for her headache to ease up. "Ye be look'n bit more awake dan when ya firs' be walk'n in."

"Yeah, that is something," Jethro said, as he shook her hand. Compared to what he was trying to get, it was a small victory. "I can usually wake myself up more if I have a reason to. Self-discipline, very important for our kind." He took his hand back and idly rubbed the scar on his palm, a reminder of what happens when discipline lapses.

"I'm fine for now, thanks," he said, he did not know if the memory he wanted was too deeply buried or replaced by something else but he doubted a second attempt would manage to dredge it up. "Here," he reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a packet of ibuprofen to offer her.

Headaches were a common problem at Hammel, he found it was often useful to carry ibuprofen around as relief for the stresses of learning to control their powers. He had a suspicion that she would likely be experiencing the beginnings of one soon. "Do I owe you anything else for your time?" He asked

Olivia nodded "Self discipline can be very important fer some gifts mor' dan oters. May I be ask'n what yer gift tis?" Olivia's gift wasn't really one that required as much concentration or discipline as many of the others. At least she didn't horribly affect people when she was emotional, or cause natural disasters. She was grateful to have such a laid back gift.

He handed her a small packet and her face lit up with relief. "Than'n ya lots, I hate hav'in dem headaches but tis part of da package dat tis havin a gift." Pulling a water bottle from her bad Olivia took the pills and shook her head. "Nah don't be needin' anyting else, yer welcome ta keep company though. Can't be doin' another for a while til da head ache be goin down."

"I'm a magnokinetist. If I concentrate I can alter the magnetic fields around my body, manipulating most metals to a certain degree." He took out a pen and made it stand straight up in the palm of his hand. He did not add that without any training he had managed to unconsciously start pulling the iron from the cells of his arm, which is what had caused the distinct burn-like scars on his arm.

The Hammel staff had explained that is was triggered by his reaching puberty and the stresses there in. It was not unusual for feelings of alienation to afflict teenagers, and that coupled with his emerging power had very likely triggered the destructive reaction. Now that he understood his power, he could control it.

"I suppose so," Jethro said, putting the pen away and rubbing his palm a little. Using his power always left him feeling a little tingly. "It is less useful than you'd think. Outside of classes and training, I almost never use it," he explained. The truth was that he did not like using it. Sure he kept himself up to speed on how to use it if he ever needed to but he was not exactly sure what he thought of it. He also felt a little bashful about her praise.

"And I've gotta watch astronomical reports on solar activity like a hawk. Whenever a wave of solar wind hits the Earth, I'm practically bed ridden. The magnetic interference plays merry havoc with the inside of my head." His migraines were not as bad as most telepathic or telekinetic students but he got his own little taste of misery all the same.

[Brooklyn Murphy]

On her way back to her dorm, Brooklyn Murphy stumbled upon a very amusing site. Her dear sister had set up the memory equivelent of a lemon-aide stand. A boy pushed passed her into the lounge and of course Brooklyn waited to see if he took the bait. And naturally as most boys his age, he did. So many of them were just mearly curious about this sort of thing. Brooklyn found it hillarious. Turning she pulled out a few pieces of paper and a large red sharpie marker.

Laughing at her little signs and their similarity to Olivia's, Brooklyn entered in on their little enteractions. They were done reliving things now and he was displaying a rather pointed gift. "Cute trick!" She smiled and nodded to him before pulling the table and chairs back and hanging her signs. "Well, Da doctor is in." Her accent and her obvious likeness to Olivia in looks gave her away imediately. "I'll jus have ter help all of dem ferget da bad tings dat migh' stir up at yer table." She gave her a sister a loving but still snarky smile.

Olivia was entranced by his gift, honestly she thought any gift that could actually be shown and proven was great. There had been several occasions when she'd honestly questioned if the recruiters were correct about her gift. Seriously having a great memory was some super power. What about fire, ice, weather, metal manipulation. Now those were cool. Or the girl back in Switzerland that could make doubles of anything. "Dat's awesome" Her grin turned to a bit of a frown when Brooklyn came wandering in. "wow creative much dere sis." Olivia sighed and sipped at her water. "Jethro, dis is my twin Brooklyn. As ye may guess her gift be da complete opposite of mine." Olivia wasn't thrilled that Brooklyn was here, but there were no rules and she wasn't really hurting anyone.

Jethro glanced between the two sisters. The similarities were, of course, remarkable. He probably would not have mistaken one for the other though, especially now that they were in close proximity. The differences between Olivia and Brooklyn were definitely distinct. Brooklyn appeared to favor brighter colors and more youthful clothes while Olivia dressed in darker colors and more mature clothes. Brooklyn the bright and Olivia the reserved. Much like their powers it seemed to him that their styles also complimented each other.

"I, uh, nice to meet you Brooklyn," Jethro said, offering her his hand. Not the smoothest of introductions but he had been a little surprised by the sudden appearance of Olivia's twin sister. Still, he rallied quickly and gave Brooklyn a good smile. "I'm going to make an effort to a avoid the usual cliche questions about twins here. You guys are what? Scottish? Irish?" Jethro had lived on military bases all over the world back when he was knee high to a grasshopper. He had a pretty good ear for accents.
