Downtime (Gerri)

Emma left her room slowly, notebook tucked under her arm. Days off weren't the blessing to her that every other student seemed to think it was. With homework done and no where to be, Emma was lost in boredom. At least back home she could go work at her dad's shop or help out May at the farm. Here, there wasn't any work needing to be done and that left Emma with more free time then she was comfortable with. She was getting used to spending this new found freedom with the other students she'd managed to make friends with, but today those people were busy.

She planned to wander around the school looking for her own entertainment. Which probably meant Emma would end up in the library, reading the day away. She walked down the hall of the dorm with a bored expression on her face, fiddling with the end of her braid and sighing lightly.

Germaine was quickly losing interest in her bedroom scenery. Life was not meant to be spent in the confines of a dorm room, doing nothing but waiting for the big Spring Melt in March. The girl wouldn’t be able to stand the boredom if winter lasted any longer than that, but once Spring came along, she could play soccer again. The option of playing in the gym was out, since she still hadn’t received a replacement soccer ball. Somehow her mother didn’t get the hint when Germaine wrote it in capitols on her Christmas wish list (in reality, her mother was protecting her table lamps, but Gerri didn’t know that).

Rather than continue doing nothing in her bedroom, the fourteen-year-old decided to head to the student lounge to find someone to talk to. When she opened the door to her suite however, there was already a conveniently placed girl walking past her door. “Hi!” Gerri greeted the passer-by with a grin, hoping she’d stop to chat. “Who’re yooou?”

Emma barely suppressed the urge to jump when Gerri called out to her. So lost was she in her on little world, that she could not stop the little gasp from escaping her lips or the sudden toss she gave of her notebook. She managed to catch it mid flight, clutching it back to her chest. Feeling foolish at her reaction, Emma turned around with a sheepish smile.

"Hello." She greeted back, raising one hand in an small wave. "I'm Emma. And you are?" She nodded to the door the young girl had presumably come out of. " You live here too?"

Germaine giggled as the other girl jumped and caught her notebook. That was cool. She liked this girl already. When Emma turned around to say hello and greet herself, Gerri bunny hopped closer to her. "Hi!" she repeated enthusiastically and thrust her hand out in front of her. "I'm Germaine Annika Sharpe, but you can call me Anni. Or Gerri. A lot of people are calling me Gerri now."

She nodded vigorously to answer the other question. Apparently, being cooped up in the dorm for so long was starting the make the fourteen-year-old hyper. "What were you up to? Where're you going? What's in the notebook?" She shot out the questions in rapid succession, drawing out the word 'notebook' and wiggling in place as she did so. Emma had struck her curiosity cord.
