This is a Time for Tears [open]

Elva woke up screaming and in a cold sweat. It wasn’t normal that she got such intense nightmares, her breathing ragged and her hand on her chest. She leaned against the wall and closed her eyes, the images dancing against the lids of her eyes. It was ridiculous for her to get so worked up from a nightmare, but she couldn’t help it.

She got up from the bed and clutched the necklace around her neck. It made her feel slightly better and she shook her hair out of her eyes. She pulled on a black jacket and went out into the dimly lit common room, looking at the three closed doors of her room mates. She gave a small laugh, hoping she hadn’t woken any of them up. They all needed their sleep and she wouldn’t want it wasted on her.

Elva put the kettle on to boil and stopped it from screaming and poured some tea for herself. She sat in one of the chairs and put her head in her hands. Pushing her hair back, she took another sip and burned the top of her mouth.

Shane rolled over in bed again his sheets soaked in sweat and yet he was still freezing. Giving up on finding something resembling a comfortable position Shane got out of bed pulling on an extra sweat shirt and a thicker pair of sweats with thick wool socks. Completing his outfit with his robe he wandered out into the kitchen to find Elva. Shane began to wave but found himself catching a flying sneeze instead. His eye were apologetic as he scrambled slowly to the tissue box. Satisfied that his hands and face were now clean he looked back at her. Hey you... you alright?

Elva sighed. She looked up at Shane, wishing he hadn’t been the one who found her or even gotten out of bed. Like him, she had a nightmare so bad, it made her scream. She was amazed that it didn’t wake up any other of her room mates. I…I’m fine. What are you doing up? she asked. She knew he was going to ask why she was up, but for now, she could focus on him, while her ears still rang from her scream and her hair was still matted in the back of her head.

She put the empty cup in the sink and sat on the counter, swinging her legs and closing her eyes. Still the images danced behind the lids and it made her jump, making her knock over the kettle of hot water, spilling it onto the floor. “Jeez…I’m a mess today,” she muttered. She took a towel and started mopping up the water.

Shane watched her but stayed a distance away. He was sick. He knew it with out doubt and he really didn't want to share with her. I'm coming down with something. Can't sleep When she closed her eyes and sat there before jumping he frowned eye filled with concern but didn't ask just helped her clean up the mess. He felt like he was missing a piece to this puzzle. Setting the kettle back on the stove after refilling it Shane started making himself some tea. Not his favorite thing to drink but alot healthier when he was sick.

'A lousy boyfriend I am, I find my girl friend awake in the middle of the night obviously upset and I can't figure out how to help her.' Chewing on his thoughts of inadequacy he sneezed again a popping sound and sensation ringing his ears in time for him to hear the kettle start to whistle. His movements clumsy he tried to hold one hand to his nose, tuck his ears to this shoulders (or atleast one ear) and move the kettle. Cleaning himself up again (sigh) he really needed to start keeping the klenex that much closer. Shane looked at her and suddenly something in his mind clicked. Were you screaming a bit ago? I can't tell if that was part of a dream or if I was really hearing it? Shane put some sugar in his tea but kept an eye on her. Eventually he washed his hands. (just to be extra safe) and placed himself before her. Taking her hands gently in his he waited.. and waited.. before pulling her into a hug. She'd talk when she was ready.

Elva felt her muscles tighten as he mentioned her scream. She didn’t think he had heard. She snuggled into his chest, not caring that he had a cold. This was nice, just to be held. She didn’t want to answer him; her hands were shaking as they tried to form the words that would at least release her a little. Yeah, that was me… She covered her eyes with her hand and turned her face into his chest. He was comforting and so cute when he just woke up, but she didn’t to ruin this moment with the mention of that damned nightmare. She was supposed to be strong. She was supposed to be stronger than people gave her credit for, but she was lousy.

She was weak and she supposed it didn’t help. Shaking her head, she wiped the tears away hoping he wouldn’t notice.

Shane just held her. Sometimes a little sad that his tea was on the other counter. Other times cursing his tickling nose and how crummy he felt. He had no doubt that if he were to try to pick her up it would result in an epic fail of grand proportions. The rest of the time he tried to figure out a better way to comfort her. But then again maybe hugs were all she needed. Shane pulled her back eventually and handed her a clean tissue. I know how much they can shake a person so I won't expect you to talk to me. But I am here if and when your ready to. Nightmares or terrors as mom called them can suck. Shane offered a weak smile, mostly because he felt so bloody drained. Taking his cooled down cup of tea he held onto one of her hands.

Elva smiled and nodded. She looked at him in concern, his nose was runny and he looked extremely tired. Shane… She put the back of her hand to his forehead and pulled it away fast. It was as if he was an oven. Quickly, she got off of him and stood a little ways away, looking around for something to cool him down. She found a washcloth behind her and rinsed it in cold water, taking the cloth, she mopped his forehead.

Honey, you’re burning up. Why are you burning up? She felt her chest tighten. IT could just be a case of the flu, but you could never be sure. She still feared for herself of catching it, but the fear for him was overriding the previous emotion.

Shane's eyes opened wide when she started fluttering around. He grinned... she did look like a butterfly fluttering about. 'Oooo....' He closed his eyes and sighed as the cold washcloth hit his forehead. He swayed slightly into it before opening his eyes. 'Ok nooooo closing the eyes' I caught a cold or something. Shane shrugged It should pass by morning

Elva took his hand and led him to the couch. She made him lay down and started mopping his forehead again. No, this kind of fever doesn’t just go away in the middle of the night. You’re going to be stuck in bed for a couple of days. Thank god it was Friday night, he had the weekend to recover on. She had helped her brother recover from this strong of the flu and was thankful that she didn’t catch it. It looked absolutely horrid to stay in bed all day. Now I’m going to cook some noodles.

She put the pan onto boil and leaned against the counter. A small smile played on her lips. It was nice to take care of someone else.

Shane let himself be dragged to the couch and collapsed into it. Ok laying down was comfy he had to admit that. You don't have to take cares of me. He gave a goofy grin but she was too stubborn he already knew. Curling up on his side (quite the feat on a small couch) Shane closed his eyes and willed himself better. 'I won't be sick, I won't be sick, I won't be sick'... didn't work. I can hope I'll be better by morning. I hate being sick. It's no fun, I hate being stuck in bed. I'm a big strong man Shane tried not to grin as he pretended to flex through his robe and sweatshirt. Shane supposed that he should warn her that he tends to get goofy when he's sick and oh ya... he can't stay still if he's given any sort of medication. He was a strictly natural remedy person so medications really messed with him in some entertaining manners.

Elva laughed quietly as she poured the noodles in. She went into her room and grabbed her diary, she had been writing in it before she went to bed. She wrote down the nightmare, not wanting to say it out loud, and handed it to him, going back to stir the pasta. When the pasta softened, she poured some kind of sauce in and then put it in two bowls and carried those to the couch. She put her bowl in her lap while resting his on the table. Her diary read;

It’s been an awful long time since I’ve had nightmares, but this one was one to remember. There really isn’t a whole lot to tell you other than, it was about me and you. Sam Mercer. Sam had come and killed you in a rage for taking me and then he killed me too and it scared me.

Shane closed his eyes again almost jumping when a book was placed in front of him. Blinking a few times he tried to focus on what was on the page. It took him several times to read it before it made something resembling sense to him. Sitting himself up he set the book aside and accepted the noodles from her. He ate slowly a bite or two before putting the noodles a side. I'm going to try to be understandable with my response. I mean.. able for you to understand me. Shane frowned thinking. He won't touch you. Shane looked at her. Well I suppose I can't promise that... my gift isn't exactly that exciting in the grand scheme of things.. wow I really am I lousy boyfriend. They're suppose to be able to protect girls and such. I couldn't even stand up for you last week when that guy tried to knock you over. Shane ran his fingers through his hair. 'Sam Mercer' The name would be passed on to Elva's brother. The best I can promise is to be here if more of these come up... and to try and find away to protect us both.

Elva put her noodles aside too, her eyes down at her feet. She suddenly leapt on him, her head on his chest, tears running freely down her cheeks. She hugged his middle tightly no caring if he could protect her or not or what his gift was. She knew he was pissed off at that guy and knew there would be more drama to come, but she was suddenly weary of drama. Sighing, she gave a small laugh. She didn’t care if he could or couldn’t hear her, she needed to say this outloud.

“I don’t care if you’re the strongest or have the coolest gift, you’re here. Your real. You don’t judge me, you don’t make fun of me meanly. You like me for who I am, and that’s why I said yes,” she said quietly, looking up at him.

*mental grunt* Shane's eyes flew open as her small body slammed into his and seemed to wrap around it. He was confused but auto pilot seemed to kick in as he wrapped his arms around her. He paid very VERY close attention when she talked to him. It wasn't very often she did talk to him so he savored every bit. The only problem was he ears felt like they had cotton in them. He could barely hear her voice and he found a new thing to hate about being sick. Pulling her back to him he resolved himself, it didn't matter if she didn't care he was still going to learn how to protect himself and her. His summer was quickly filling up as he leaned his head back on the couch. He had things he wanted and needed to do. Now he just had to find the time. A rack of coughs started to rumble in his chest. Sitting forward quickly he covered his mouth in time for them to filter out his chest shaking. Finally it stopped. Sorry

Elva smiled and continued to lean against him. There were still so many things she wanted to tell him, but now wasn’t the time. She laughed. It’s alright. It’s not your fault that your sick, though I porbably shouldn’t be leaning on you like this. Even after she said that, she didn’t move. She was too comfortable and was hoping he was too. She gave him a kiss on the forehead and kneaded her knuckles into his stomach. With her hands working, she said, “It’s weird, but I heard that kneading the stomach makes people feel better. Tell me if it hurts you.”
