Another day, another dollar. Well Kali hoped to bring in more than one dollar. That sort of income didn't pay the bills, or pay for upkeep. She adjusted the belt at her waist and shifted to her spot behind the counter. Her routine continued on this day as it had for the past year or so. Work. Work. Work.

She loved her work, don't get her wrong. She was just starting to miss the social part that came with her life. Sure she talked to her regulars, and made conversation with her employees. But where were her friends? Kali always had a bazillion friends, and people to hang out with, but the days she had off (thanks to her growing list of employees) she slept, or cleaned her house, or something of the sort. She worked over fifty hours a week, even after hiring everyone because she still felt uncomfortable with not being in the cafe. 'What if' questions plagued her like acne.

However, this summer, she had made a promise to herself, and to her mother, that she would trust in her employees and take an entire week off come summer, and go visit her family. Samuel had crawled out of Las Vegas and had returned home, and Kali wanted to knock some sense into her brother, before there was nothing left because of her mother knocking sense into him. She pulled at her bangs a little and inspected them. It was about time for another hair cut. Her hair was longer than it had been in a...long time, and on most days she didn't know what to do with it.

When the guitar filled the air she looked away from her bangs and smiled. "Hey, what's up? Welcome to Kali's. You need any thing, just lemme know."

Kateri hadn’t been into Kali’s before. She didn’t really know why. Pilot Ridge wasn’t that large of a town, and it wasn’t like there were many other things to do. In spite of that, however, she’d always managed to keep herself occupied. There was always work, for one. Trying to visit her family, or even just talking with them for another. Really, there wasn’t that much. She needed to get out more, and visit places that normal people went to.

It was that thought that had encouraged her to actually go to Kali’s when she’d had a bad craving for coffee. Usually, she made her own. Although she knew that coffee stores were very popular in America, and even now in Ireland, she’d never really thought much of going them. But she’d wanted something with caffeine that she didn’t have to make herself, and something that wasn’t just her traditional black. She wanted something with—gasp—a different flavor. So she collected her purse, left her papers behind so she wouldn’t have to think about them, then headed to the coffee store.

Her first impression was a good one. She liked the guitar sound as she entered (although it took her a moment to realize it WAS the door) , the casual atmosphere, the general friendliness that seemed to be floating about. A genuine smile of pleasure appeared on the woman’s lips as she looked about, brushing her hair out of her face. This was more of what she’d been missing: sort of the pub-like atmosphere, complete with alcohol. She couldn’t wait to tell Neil. Maybe that would get him to come visit.

And surely that was Kali: the woman with the bright hair and bangs, looking busy. She hadn’t been in there, but she’d done her homework, listening to other people talk about it and reading the occasional article. It helped that Kali wasn’t much differently sized. She liked the woman already.

“Can I try the special?” she inquired, figuring, well, why the hell not? She was here to try something different. She hadn’t even looked at what it was, although perhaps she should have…oh well. "Beautiful place, by the way."

The Outfit

Where was a girl to go when she was alone, depressed, and in the middle of that time of the month? Well, this girl walked through the mall twice, took the bus downtown, walked around town, and stumbled upon this place. Her gloved fingers moved her swooping bangs out of her face as she looked around, dark eyes curious.

She had never been here before, any regular could tell. She was dressed stylishly, as one of "her kind" could dress, when she was a tomboy at heart. Long fingers tugged her gloves off and tucked them into her jacket pocket as she walked forward. Her heels clicked on the floor after the guitar sound faded, long suede boots encasing long, lean legs. Several young male regulars took long glances at her as she walked to the counter, her expression locked on the menu.

"May I...may I have the special please?" she asked politely, looking down from the menu to meet the eyes of the barista. She was quite pretty, with her hair in a cool shade of red and cut to make it edgy. She smiled at the woman behind the counter. "I like your hair...that's a cool color." She fingered her own dark mahogany and black tresses. "I couldn't ever do something like that, with my hair this dark. I tried once, and it turned out to be a mess."

She gave a short laugh and looked around. "This is a wonderful place. Casual...I like the vibe. The guitar sound's pretty cool too. Are you the owner?"

Kali was never big in astronomy, but she always found that people were generally in poopy moods around the full moon. This week happened to be the week of the full moon, and she planned her daily specials accordingly.

Lots of chocolate.

The oven item for today was a chocolate cupcake (she used the molds of her huge muffins) with fudge icing and sprinkles, a chocolate latte with Caramel and whip cream from the fountain, and two slices of toasted cinnamon bread. She felt the combination of chocolate and the fact it cost exactly two bucks would help improve the moods of those smart enough to order it.

She looked up when a lady walked in and she grinned when she asked for the special. "Yes you may! And good choice. It'll be a minute." She said as she turned to make the girl's latte. She smiled at the woman over her shoulder when she commented on her place, "thank you very much! I figure I spent the money to build the place, I get to do what the hell I want to. By the beginning of summer, I hope to get a second story going on, but we'll see how that goes, gas prices going up as it is." Her Jeep was a guzzler but Kali was attached to the cherry red thing and would be sad to sell it. She slid the girl her latte when it was done and then got the toasted bread (with a generous layer of butter) and cupcake for the lady's devouring pleasure. She set them on a tray and then smiled at the woman.

"That'll be two dollars!" Kali loved her job, she really did.

She looked up when the guitar filled the room and she smiled towards the potential customer. "G'day! I'm Kali, what can I get for you today?" She asked when the girl made it up to the counter. She smiled when she ordered a special, though when she turned to look at the display case she was sad to see there weren't anymore cupcakes. "It'll be a minute, sweety. Gotta make another batch of cupcakes." She retreated into the kitchen to place the order and then quickly went about making the woman's latte when she heard the complement to her hair, she turned to smile.

"Well thanks! I've been dying it like this since college...I just get bored with it easy, you know?" She gave the girl a sideways tilt of her head--she was actually a brunette naturally but she hadn't seen that color since high school-- "I think yah could do it, just have to dye it a bit lighter first. I think it'd look pretty bad ass on you. Maybe like a blue and purple." She suggested while she fixed the latte. She set it on the counter and smiled at her.

"I am the owner!" She loved saying that. This was her place. "And thank you. It's my baby." She looked around fondly, a smile on her face. She set the girl's toast cinnamon bread on a plate and set that next to the latte. "The cupcake will take a bit."

Kateri had never been here yes, but nonetheless, she thought that she would be making coming here a regular occurrence. She didn’t have chocolate a lot. When she got cravings during that time of the month, she tended to go for the wine in large amounts. Or just sugar, raw. She didn’t much believe in baking when she was stressed out: better to go for the raw materials and skip the middle step that took all that time. Still, this wasn’t a bad way to go. Next time, she’d come here first. Less time and less stress. It was perfect. Well, not for her diet, but she went jogging regularly. She could handle this. She smiled to herself, then paid the two dollars—which had the benefit of being reasonable—then stepped aside as the other young woman stepped out. She didn’t see a seat, and she wanted to keep getting a look around, so she remained standing, nibbling on the cupcake and letting out a little sigh. Oh, that was wonderful.

“This is great,” she told Kali. “And I agree with the…um…miss here.” She offered a smile to the other girl, who she didn’t know, then to Kali. “It is nice. And you would look good with blue hair,” she added to Taeyeon. Not that anyone had invited her into the conversation, but she was curious, and she had a tendency to invite herself into conversations anyways. Bad habit. Very bad habit indeed, but she enjoyed it anyways. “Here. Since your cupcake is still cooking, and I doubt I can eat this all anyways…” She set it down on the counter and split it in half, then offered it to Taeyeon. “Here you go.” Why not? It was only going to help her waistline in the long run, and the younger girl could probably handle the calories better than she could. “I swear, I’m safe. I’m a teacher up at the school—no poisoning here.”
