The Basics
Name: Sebastian Marcus Reed
Nicknames: Seb, Seba, Bastion
Age: 18 [born May 18]
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers:
Light Manipulation:
Seb can manipulate light, making it appear stronger or dimmer than it actually is. He can also move light away from its source, or even bottle it up to save for late (like a lantern). While he can make a lot of light from very little, he cannot make light were there was none. He can keep light going long after the source has been extinguished. Neither can he extinguish a light without extinguishing its source (for example, if he had a lit candle, he could move, increase, or decrease the light emitted, but he could never take it away completely). Similarly, he cannot change the inherent properties of the light he manipulates. For example, if he bottles and increases light emission from a candle, the light will still flicker and wave like candle light does. Also, if the light from the source is blue, he cannot make it shine white. By removing the light from a particular area, Sebastian can hide himself in darkness.
Side effects used to include light sensitivity and poor night vision.

The Details
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Greenish Blue
Any Piercings? None
Any Tattoos? None
Any Scars? He had a bad case of the chicken pox when he was a preteen, so he has a few pox scars on his face. He also has a scar across his left wrist from a biking accident, a scar on his stomach from when he got his appendix removed, and an scar on his leg from getting a broken leg pinned.
General Appearance: Sebastian is meticulous about his appearance. That’s not to say that he spends as much time as a girl, but he likes to look good. His hair pretty much goes wherever it wants to, but that’s parcially intentional. He is careful of his body odor, so he is sure to shower at least once a day and after any sort of sweating. He wears a bit of cologne, but never enough to be overpowering. His clothing, however, he is sure to make sure matches and he keeps them neat.
His hair is auburn, generally cut at the bottom of his ears and the nape of his neck. It is straight, but generally unruly. He’s long since discovered that he can’t tame his hair, so he rocks the wind-blown look.
Sebastian’s eyes are a clear greenish-blue. They are bright, but not striking. There is a depth to his eyes that makes it seem like you can see right into his soul. This is helped along by the fact that his face is exceedingly expressive. He can’t lie at all because his face will give his real emotions away.
Sebastian is about 6’ 2” tall, and thinly built. He has muscles, but his muscles are more similar to that of a swimmer than a body-builder. He has little excess fat mostly because he eats like a bird.
He has the perfect fingers for piano, long and thin, which is awesome because he plays the piano.
Personality:
Sebastian is not what one would call “quiet”. He loves to talk and chatter and debate, especially with his friends. Around strangers he is a bit more timid, but not an introvert and he’s okay around people he doesn’t know, just better with people he does. His voice is low and moderately soft, but it carries through a room. No one has trouble hearing what he says.
Though he is quick to make friends, Sebastian has a lot of trouble trusting people that he doesn’t know. He can like you, and hang out with you on weekends, but he probably won’t tell you his secrets.
He’s very responsible and trustworthy, but he’s too curious for his own good and will often stick his nose where it doesn’t belong just to see what happens. Trouble often finds him because he always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong times. He is a terrible liar, and has long since given up trying to lie about stuff, because people usually see right through him.
Sebastian is stubborn as a rock once he’s set his mind to something. He’d love a good, educated debate, but even if you make points that are far more valid than his own, he’ll go home believing the same thing as before you started. He’s not gullible at all, and will take his good sweet time forming those opinions. He is a genuinely kind person, though his temper is fairly short and he’ll often snap at his closest friends for little reason. There is not an ounce of violence in his bones, but he’ll threaten violence if he’s in a particularly foul mood. He has a massive sweet tooth, but eats very little at meals. He loves music, most any kind, but especially classic rock. He loves to read and studies more than you’d think. He can get by on very little sleep, and he generally does. It’s hard to tell if the bags under his eyes are from too little sleep or if that’s just the way his face is.
He has no sense of personal space, and is the rare sort of guy who’d love to cuddle without expecting anything more.

Strengths: Sebastian has been running and swimming since he was a kid (those are pretty much the only sports he’s ever done) and he’s gotten fairly good. He’s very intelligent, and more than a little nerdy. He’s also exceedingly bad-ass at the piano. He’s been taking lessons since he was 4. He’s also a genuinely nice person, and fun to be around.
Weaknesses: Sebastian couldn’t lie to save his life. He’d absolutely make the worst spy ever. He’s far too curious for his own good. That means he learns a lot, but he also gets into trouble. He’s fairly good at meeting people one-on-one, but he’s never been very comfortable in large groups of people he doesn’t know. He has no problem with stage fright, though.
Fears:
-Sebastian is terrified of the dark. He keeps a bit of bottled sunlight in a jar around his neck, just in case.
-He copes with fear and stress by playing the piano, so he’s afraid of hurting his delicate fingers, because then how would he deal with his problems?
-He’s also got a bit of a fear of needles, and he hates the doctor for pretty much that reason. Plus it smells funny.
Secret: He sucks at keeping secrets, but few enough people know about his fear of the dark. He‘s embarrassed about it.
Family Ties
Father: James Hamilton Reed. 49, balding, manages a small bank in Arlington, VA.
Mother: Elizabeth (Liz) Marie Reed. 48, brown hair, thin, stay at home mom.
Siblings: Sister: Jessica (Jesse) Ann Reed. 14, cute as a button, extremely intelligent.
Any Other Important People:Sebastian‘s best friend from Arlington, Mathew, has kept in touch since Sebastian was brought to the Institute. It’s been five years, and people change a lot in that amount of time, but they’ll still chat on the internet sometimes and hang out in the summers. Matt is Sebastian’s go-to guy when he gets sick of all the weirdness at school, which doesn’t happen as much as it used to. Matt knows all about Sebastian’s power and helped him deal with it in the week before the Institute found him.
History
Sebastian was adopted by James and Liz Reed when he was 9 months old. They’d been trying to conceive for about two years, but Liz never managed to carry a baby to term. After quite a few miscarriages, they gave up, unable to stand the thought of losing another baby. Liz’s cousin had successfully adopted three kids, so the Reeds followed his example. They never hid the fact that Sebastian was adopted from him, and he never felt the need to find his birth parents. Four years later, they adopted Jesse from the same orphanage.
As Jesse and Sebastian grew up, they were closer than most sibling that far apart in age could ever hope to be. Sebastian was the perfect big brother, protecting her and antagonizing her in equal measure. They got into trouble together, and then went out to do the same stuff again. Sebastian was clever, but Jesse even more so. They’d play games where they had to memorize poems or passages from their dad’s old timey books, then compete to see who remembered it better. They would chose plays and then perform them together, sometimes playing the worst roles possible for young children. They would perform their adaptation of plays for the neighborhood kids, and would often make even the most tragic of plays into comedies. They had no patience for sad stories. Despite the fact that Sebastian can’t lie to save his life, he was a fair actor. Jesse, of course, was far better than he. She was better at pretty much everything except physical activities. They played odd games for children, but they enjoyed it. Jesse was two grades above the rest of the girls her age, so she had few friends besides Sebastian, making them even closer. She was too mature for her age, so she didn’t get along with the other young girls, anyways. Sometimes Sebastian’s best friend Matt would join them, but then they’d play more normal games. Matt was shy and hated memorization.
When Sebastian was 14, just starting high school with Matt, his power began to emerge. At first, he thought he was imagining it, because it started with little things: his Bunsen burner burned brighter and hotter than everyone else’s, he couldn’t be out in the sun without sun glasses, sometimes the nightlight in his room was brighter than he’d though would be possible with such a small light. Soon, though, he realized that he could do much more, such as move light and make it bigger and smaller. He told Matt about it, but kept it a secret from his sister; she’d always loved curiosities that couldn’t be explained, and he wanted to make her something amazing for her birthday that winter. Unfortunately, in November of that year, about a week after he began really experimenting with his powers, officials from the Institute came to take him away.
Obviously, this came as a shock to his whole family, mostly because he’d never shown them his powers. His parents had always been accepting of their children’s oddities, but this was more than Jesse’s cleverness, or Sebastian’s knack for the piano. It wasn’t long before they accepted him, but Jesse took longer. For the remainder of the school year, she refused to speak to Sebastian when he called home, and she stayed hidden in her room when he came home for breaks. She claimed it was because she was scared of him, but Sebastian knew that wasn’t right. That summer he took her aside and, after a lot of begging, she confessed that she was mad at him for leaving her. She knew, in that big brain of hers, that it wasn’t his fault, but she didn’t have hardly any friends before, and now she’d lost the one person she really, really cared about. For a moment, she seemed to be the 11 year old girl that she really was. She was also a little pissed that he hadn’t trusted her enough to tell her about it.
After that, the two siblings rekindled their relationship, but it felt slightly more strained than before. Sebastian showed her his power, and she showed him how she could play all the parts of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, which, frankly, was hysterical when she was playing all of the cross-dressing lovers. Gradually over that summer the tension faded, and the siblings are closer now, but it’s a lot harder to maintain a long-distance friendship.
Sebastian is happy at the Institute, and he’d probably be happy anywhere. He loves what he’s learning, and frankly he’s getting a much better education than he was getting at his old public school.
Roleplay Example
It was one of those days when it was cold enough to freeze your breath, the kind of day when little kids like to pretend they are a dragon. Kael, however, wasn't phased by the jovial potential in the coldness; he was more focused on the coldness itself. He was no stranger to cold, not by a long shot, but it did make him feel horribly lonely. Winter was the worst season for street performing in Chicago, because no one wanted to linger in the streets too long, and warm cloths were too restricting to allow for any good tricks. So Kael associated winter with short days and long nights of telling stories around the fire in Rowan's little house, eating cookies fresh from the bakery and perhaps practicing a new routine for the spring.
It was this loneliness that lead him to the Enso Cafe, where he assumed he'd be warm, at least, and perhaps find pleasant company, too. And that was where he headed, bundled warmly in a black, sleek jacket with a rather cozy red scarf and gloves. A nice but well-worn fedora topped his head.
He stepped through the door of the cafe and immediately felt his palms itching; he rarely stepped into such a respectable establishment unless he was going to nick something. Heck, even a coffee here was far out of his price range. No, he mentally scolded himself. That's what landed you here in the first place. As he'd rather not spend the next six to nine weeks in a little jail cell, he headed straight for the corner of the establishment, away from the wares.
A girl, pretty, with black hair and a conspicuous eye patch sat alone at one of the farthest tables. She appeared to have just finished writing in her diary. Kael slid into the seat across from her as she picked up the little book once again and sipped her drink.
"Be careful not to burn yourself, Miss. I hear the coffee here is hot," he warned her, a playful grin tracing his face. He had, of course, heard nothing of the sort, but it was a good ice breaker, he'd decided.
