The Basics
Name: Arlo Xiomar Pecatti.
Nicknames: Arl, Xi.
Age: 12 years of age. (Date of birth: 21st March)
Orientation: Bisexual.
Desired Rank/Job: Student.
Powers:Heat resistance. When things are technically hot enough to burn a person, Arlo isn't burnt. The weakness of this power is that it is impossible for him to get warm and his immune system is somewhat depleted because of his constant lower-than-average body temperature.
Play By: Cameron Monaghan.
The Details
Hair Color: Ginger naturally, although he has been known to dye it black.
Eye Color: Grey.
Any Piercings? None.
Any Tattoos? None - although he would like one.
Any Scars? Yes - He has a scar on his right knee and right lower forearm from being pushed down a flight of stone stairs onto some concrete by his older sister when he refused to carry her shopping bags - a fairly minor argument that resulted in Arlo being taken to hospital for stitches.
General Appearance: Arlo is a reasonably small boy given his age, his height being just 121cm and his weight being just 28kg. His low weight is surprising given how often he cooks various meals. Many expect him to be overweight given how much he cooks but this is simply not the case. His appearance certainly makes him look much younger than he is and he is more than used to people asking him how old he really is when he's in a class with people the same age as himself.
His father had black hair, the color which all of his brothers and sisters inherited through the gene pool, but Arlo has ginger hair like his mother. His hair color, according to her, is what has made him have so many freckles as well. Not only did he inherit the ginger genes from her, he also inherited the shortness and thinness; the only member of himself and his siblings to have done so.
His typical clothing consists of a pair of black trousers and a black leather jacket (that belonged to his older brother years ago which he has now claimed as his own). His shoes are usually the sort you would see on some sort of biker, only in much smaller proportions given that he is rather minuscule compared to them. He has been known to dye his hair black in order to fit in more with the rest of his family but currently, he has left it with it's ginger coloring. His skin is fairly pale, although there is a faint tan there which was inherited from his father, along with his grey eyes.
Personality: Arlo is quite a solitary boy, spending most of his time alone reading. One reason for this is that his English isn't particularly brilliant. He was born in Italy and lived there for most of his life and his main spoken language is therefore Italian. He is quite shy around Americans, tending to find them overly loud and generally larger than him, but once you get to know him he can be quite a amusing boy. He can find it hard to trust adults because he never really had much contact with them as a child and therefore it can take him a while to respond to them.
He can often be found simply staring into space, lost in thought over one thing or another, and it can take a lot to break him out of his thoughts sometimes. He doesn't mean to ignore people who are talking to him but sometimes this is the result of him daydreaming. Another thing he tends to do a lot is simply watch everyone around him without taking part at all in anything they are doing. This is because he feels that he needs to learn how Americans act sometimes, given that he isn't American. He doesn't really know how to play and have fun, having been forced to work most of his life without any sort of break, so he can often be found just watching others having fun and trying to work out what they're doing.
Your Vices
Likes: Arlo learned to love spiders as a young boy, finding them very useful in summertime for getting rid of flies and pesky things like mosquito's. His favorite color would have to be black, given how often he wears it, although he likes purple as well but it doesn't go well with his ginger hair so he tends to avoid that color in clothing. His favorite food is pizza, although it has to be Italian pizza or it just doesn't taste the same. His favorite drink is Sicilian lemonade, again because it reminds him of home. His favorite article of clothing would have to be his leather jacket that used to be his brothers as it reminds him of the happy times they spent together. When it comes to school, his favorite subjects are home economics, art and science. He likes making things, especially things he can give to other people, so these subjects allow him to do this more often.
Dislikes: One thing that Arlo really can't stand is seeing people in trouble. He would do anything he could to help them, only he is often to shy to act in the way he really wants to. He hates arrogant people that think they're better than everyone else because that reminds him too much of his father who did nothing but put Arlo down for being different to everyone else. He dislikes people that copy others, preferring individuals.
Strengths: Arlo is exceptionally good at cooking and drawing. He enjoys making things and has developed quite a talent for this. The subject that he is best at in school is home economics, closely followed by art and science. He never understood why he was able to cook with so little fear but being able to touch hot items without feeling the heat may have something to do with this. Another strength would be his reading skills. He picked up reading at a very young age through learning about food.
Weaknesses: He finds communicating with people very difficult. While many would believe this is due to the language barrier between English and Italian, Arlo has never been good at communicating with people. He simply sits in silence for hours, sometimes nodding or shaking his head, unless he feels particularly comfortable with someone. He finds it hard to trust new people in general, although there will always be one or two people he will trust almost instantly for unknown reasons. His immune system is somewhat depleted by his heat resistance which means that he gets ill regularly. Before his powers manifested, it was just thought he had an immune deficiency and was taking extra vitamins and various different medications to try to boost his immune system.
Fears: Arlo fears going back to hospital with his immune deficiency again, what with the way he is always cold and getting ill in one manner or another. He also fears his father somewhat, although he has never found out why he fears him so much.
Secret: Arlo wants to open his own restaurant in America when he is older, rather than becoming a successful businessman like his father wants him to be.
Family Ties
Father: Vito Pecatti is a fairly old man now, although he spends almost all of his time working and earning money. He rarely spends any time with his wife or his children and when he is forced to spend time with them, arguments usually ensue. Vito travels all over the world on business which is unknown to his family. He is a very secretive man.
Mother: Carolena Branning is also getting on in years now, although she is more willing to spend time with her family than Vito is. She originally moved to Italy from Canada after meeting Vito on a business trip and the two of them ended up married with children. Carolena often returns to Canada to visit her family or goes with Vito on his business trips so she is rarely there for their children either.
Siblings: Arlo has two older brothers and three older sisters, meaning that his family is quite a large one. This is probably a good thing because of the lack of time their parents tend to spend with them. They get to spend a lot of time together and look after each other as well.
Alessandro is the oldest of the Pecatti children. He is 30 years old - a considerable number of years older than Arlo. The two don't get along particularly well given the age gap and the fact that Alessandro tends to be fairly arrogant like their father. He lives in France with his fiance and hasn't seen Arlo since he was barely a year old. The two aren't particularly close.
Carlotta was the second oldest Pecatti child, born four years after Alessandro and is now aged 26 years. Carlotta works as a secretary to a law firm in Italy. Arlo and Carlotta do get along okay but they're not the best of friends. They tolerate each other but Carlotta finds Arlo to be too quiet for his own good.
Giovanna, or Anna as she prefers, was the third child, now aged 20. There was a while between the births of these children but given the lives their parents lead, it was hardly surprising. Anna is studying at a British university, hoping to go into the world of medicine, perhaps as a nurse. She gets on reasonably well with Arlo, although they rarely see each other.
Silvestro is the second male child born to the Pecatti family. He is now 17 years old. He moved to America to study to become a veterinary surgeon and took Arlo with him because there was nobody else at home able to look after him any more. They are extremely close but Silvestro lives on the other side of America now so they rarely see one another.
Florentine is the final Pecatti, aged 14 years. She studies at a boarding school in Vicenza and lives with Carlotta during school holidays. Arlo gets on well with her but they rarely see each other because they went to different schools and lived in different places as children.
Any Other Important People:Arlo has a pet tarantula that stays with Silvestro on the other side of America. It is called Andreana, meaning 'dark' in Italian.
There is one other person whom helped to bring Arlo up to be the boy he is now and that was a maid employed by the Pecatti parents to look after their children while they were away doing business in other countries. Arlo, and all of the other children, get on very well with her.
History
Arlo was born into a fairly rich family as the only red head in the family; something which caused some controversy to begin with because it was thought that Carolena had cheated on Vito with another man. However, no DNA tests were ever carried out due to the close resemblance Arlo had to his mother, minus the slightly tanned look he had and his grey eyes, both of which came from his father.
Arlo was a quiet baby, barely crying at all and spending much of his time simply sitting and staring into space or playing with spiders and insects from a young age. He spent more time with animals than humans, or he would simply sit alone. He never craved attention from anyone, often sitting alone just staring into space for hours. His parents thought there was something wrong with him, that he was some sort of freak or outcast. So did many of his siblings. Silvestro would often sit and hold him though. They didn't speak, they just sat together.
As they grew older, most of the family left the main household that the Pecatti's owned and soon enough there was only four remaining children living there; Anna, Silvestro, Florentine and of course Arlo. Anna was the oldest so she was the one the other three went to if they needed anything.
The maid that was employed by the Pecatti household was the main form of parenting that was given to the children, particularly to Arlo given that their parents were away even more after his birth, and so he became very close to her. It was her that realized something was wrong when Arlo contracted a common cold and seemed unable to get over it, ending up in hospital. This was the first time Arlo actually met his father aged four years old and he was terrified of him from the first moment he saw him. He resembled someone from the Mafia or from another large corporation that was equally terrifying to him. He never did learn of his father's true profession, however, and he never questioned anyone about what it was.
Arlo got out of hospital after a few months in there, having recovered quite significantly and being told that he had an immunity disorder that would need constant treating or he would get very sick, given his age and size and the fact that he was very much still growing. It was less than two years later though that he ended up in hospital again, having contracted influenza this time. The doctors thought it would be best for him to be in the hospital until he recovered fully.
When Arlo got out of hospital for the second time, the maid soon began to learn that Arlo liked to do things that were creative, including art and cookery, much to his father's dismay. He was only around the age of seven at this time and his father took it as a signal his youngest son was a homosexual; something else which he didn't agree with. In fact, Arlo just liked doing creative things and had no interest in love to any degree at that time. He spent more of his time secluded reading recipes and drawing pictures and generally being left out of things the rest of his family did when his parents were around. This was often his own decision though as he preferred his own company and the ability to be creative without interruptions.
The older siblings decided that it was about time Arlo stopped spending all his time alone though and they forced him out on a shopping trip. At this time, Anna was 16 years old and felt that Arlo should have had more friends than he did so they all went shopping together so that they could find out more about what Arlo was interested in. Upon finding that there was little other than art and cooking he was interested in (and buying him around 10 cook books to read) Anna told Arlo he should make himself more useful and tried to force him to take some of the shopping bags. Already having heavy bags, he refused and she pushed him down the stone steps they were on. He passed out at the bottom of the steps and had to go to hospital for stitches. Arlo resented his sister somewhat for what she had done to him but he never vocalized this resentment because he felt he owed her a lot for bringing him up, along with the maid employed by their parents.
Silvestro tried to pay more attention to Arlo when Anna left as Florentine went to a boarding school, leaving just the two of them there spending more time together. Gradually, they grew even closer than they had been as children and when Silvestro turned 17 he informed his parents he would be leaving to go to a veterinary school in America. Arlo told Silvestro that he didn't want to be left alone in that house with just their parents for company, admitting for the first time he was scared of their father, and Silvestro agreed to take Arlo with him to America. Arlo's medication was to be taken with them and Silvestro was to make sure he got to see a doctor as soon as they made it to America.
The flight there went smoothly and Silvestro soon got Arlo in to see a doctor who agreed to continue providing the medication for Arlo given the records provided by his Italian doctor. Silvestro made sure they had a reasonably sized flat to live in while he was studying so that Arlo had enough space to do his own thing as well. One day while they were there, Arlo offered to cook for them both and Silvestro agreed to this, knowing Arlo's passion for cooking. Arlo prepared the meal and then put it in the oven, leaving it there until it needed taking out at which point he did what he would always do; he took the hot tray out of the oven. What he didn't realize was that he had done it bare handed and hadn't been burned at all. However, despite having been taking all of his medication and not having any illnesses, he passed out and dropped the tray, causing Silvestro to go to him immediately.
Arlo was taken to hospital with his body temperature being well below average, this time nothing to do with his immunity disorder, yet the doctors didn't know what it was that had caused it. Soon enough, someone showed up and asked to do tests on him and that was where his story begins...
Roleplay Example
It was a warm summer's day and the sounds of shouts and screams of children playing some sort of sport outside. Was it football or soccer? It was certainly one of those, what with the sound of so many shouts and cheers. It seemed to be a popular sport. Arlo never had been one for sport when the temperature was reasonable, let alone on a day like today when the sun was beating down on the earth like it was trying to cook everything on the planet. No, Arlo much preferred sitting in the cool confines of his dorm room reading one book or another. Not that temperature mattered, it was just darker and less likely to damage his eyes.
That day was really no different. He was reading a book that he had read many times before. It was a cookery book that his brother, Silvestro, had given him for his last birthday. He would read it when he was missing him, mostly, but the recipes in it weren't all that bad either. He must have made them all a dozen times each, much to the dismay of his father. He was half way through reading the second recipe in the book when there was a loud cheer outside which distracted him from the line he was on. This was followed by a thud on the top window on the wall next to his bed.
Arlo glanced up to see nothing there anymore (although would there have been anyway, given the manner in which gravity works?) but there was the sound of running on the gravel outside the window and he smiled faintly. It had just been the ball hitting the window, most probably. He put his book down and picked up an English recipe book instead, flicking through it to find a similar recipe to the one he had been reading in Italian. Maybe that would help him learn more words in English. He needed to show he was trying after all, didn't he?
