Envy
The other kids would always talk about how wonderful homeschooling was, in retrospect. When Sakhmet came home from public school, he’d listen to her cry, to either him or the hired help, about how hard it was to fit in at school. Horus and Anubis were and are just as bad, if not more so. But as he listened to their troubles, nodding and patting their heads and giving them words of encouragement at the right times, he wished they would, for just a moment, put themselves in his shoes and realize he had gone through hell. Yes, they had gone through it too. Horus was still going through it. But their hell, compared to his, was like comparing the first circle to the seventh, abysmal pit of hell.
No social interaction with anyone his age, and right at puberty, when he was at his most awkward, he was swept away to Switzerland, against his will. He was separated from the rest of his family and thrust in with a bunch of uppity teenagers who tormented him, day in and day out. The super strength was a good defense, admittedly, but it didn’t stop the verbal abuse and the eventual blatant exclusion from the social cliques at Kocher. He was the weird kid, and even when Sett came along, he fit right into a group and he learned how to fit in pretty quick. Sett was quick to adapt. No one loved Ra, not until he transferred to Hus Academy. Then, only the researchers loved him.
So, when his siblings complain about how hard school was/is, he grits his teeth and takes it.
Because that’s what big brothers do.
Gluttony
When it comes to food, Ra is particular about everything down to the very last calorie count. Ever since his siblings came under his care, he stocked the pantry to the brim. He understood what it was like for them: hopping around from country to country with their parents, they never really knew when (or where) their next truly edible meal would be. Ra was a picky eater, and it showed even in his grocery shopping. Only certain brands would do, no matter how expensive.
He taught Sakhmet how to cook- partially to keep her out of trouble and partially because he doesn’t have the patience, nor the time to cook for people. He knew Sakhmet liked that sort of thing; he just had to give her free reign of the kitchen. He would soon come to regret it- some of the recipes she picked up from their travels were dishes he was most certainly not fond of.
It is true, Ra likes to eat more than the average person, but he has a very particular palate. Wine, for example, is a very touch and go sort of indulgence for him. Only certain liquor is allowed in his household, and even then it comes under close scrutiny before it is deemed acceptable. The only bread in the house is wheat. Junk food is a very rare sight. He is very, very particular about ripe fruit and vegetables, sometimes visiting multiple grocery stores in order to find the perfect assortment of greens.
If his siblings live in his house, he maintains that they will eat by his standards, or they will not eat at all.
Because that’s what big brothers do.
Greed
The Richmond family is what their name implies: rich. The children have trust funds, compound interest- they could live quite comfortably for the rest of their lives, if they wished. Each of them has money enough to get them through college without a problem, Sett in particular- he had used his funds to the fullest, with all his majors and apprenticeships- but the funds would eventually wither and die, one day. But, that would be after they were gone. Their parents have made sure of that. For now, they were sitting pretty.
Well, Ra was never one to sit and do nothing.
Currency exchange- one of the best ways to make money without doing anything. Is Yen inflation a big deal in Japan? Take a couple hundred in USD, get that Yen, sit on it. Wait. It’ll go back up. The Japanese are good like that. Two dollars for a single euro? Well, that dip back in February where it was just the opposite is finally over. Cash some of that money and count it out. Four times the starting amount? How... Nice.
But that’s not enough. The family needs to be filthy rich, not just moderately so. Stay up all night and invest in Penny Stocks, Ra. So much money, just waiting for you...
So there are a few bugs in the system. That’s to be expected. You can’t win them all, just most of them. It doesn’t matter, as long as you get richer and richer. You have to, Ra. You’re getting richer than your parents. Soon, you’ll be making the most money in the house.
So, when your siblings ask you for money, you can nonchalantly give them a twenty and wink, smiling as they tell you how much they love you, for your money.
Because that’s what big brothers do.
Lust
One would think there isn’t much to say- when it comes to lust, anyway- about a man who has never held a steady relationship for more than three months. Out of the seven, Ra is possibly the most virtuous, in that particular sense of the word. While he has indeed had a few flings and a couple of fizzled relationships, it should be said that Ra maintains an excellent record with his ex-girlfriends and is far from a lothario. He is, if anything, the perfect gentleman. Flowers, chocolate, always remembering important dates, never late, all those things and more. The only issue his girlfriends have is that they will always be second; family always will come first.
And, while it has been obvious that the seven children of the Richmond family are not the most chaste of individuals, Ra maintains that his sibling’s freedom in relationships does not need to be repressed. If they were told they had to stop, they would just do it in secret, and that worries him even more. So, he lets his siblings maintain whatever relationships they wish.
Well, except for one.
Ra has always been protective over Isis. Any relationship Isis has been in has met Ra’s immediate disapproval: they aren’t good enough for him, they treat him poorly, they don’t respect him, they have nasty habits, or they simply are unacceptable in every way possible. Ra has run off nigh everyone Isis has dated at some time or another, and continues to do so. He often nips any relationship in the bud; if Isis brings someone home, Ra makes certain they leave very quickly. His record time? Ten seconds. He’s trying to make five.
You’ve been waiting for the dark secret, haven’t you?
You want to know Ra’s deepest, darkest desires, yes? You want to know what is wrong with him, so wrong that even he knows how wrong he is. Well, here you go.
Isis is his.
The day that his baby brother Isis was born, Ra was the first child to hold him; not surprising, as he had done the very same for Sett, and Osiris, along with all the children afterward. It was his right, as the eldest. But for some reason, something clicked in Ra’s brain when he took hold of Isis. Staring into those hypnotic blue eyes, something happened to the eldest child. Suddenly, no one else was allowed to touch his baby brother, not even his Father. Only his mother could hold him, and Ra stayed silent by her side until she was done, taking him the instant she held him out. The same word kept falling from Ra’s mouth: ‘mine’. It was Isis’s second word. The first, of course, was ‘Ra’.
Isis gets anything he wants. Money, protection, free rides to anywhere. If Isis wants to go to Paris, than Ra will take him to Paris. Viva la France. But Ra maintains, begs, and pleads, that he cannot bring anyone else home. He only wants the best for his sibling, the one he calls his. He wants him all to himself, and really, he should be allowed that one small pleasure. He’s done so much for everyone; he should be allowed to have one person all to himself.
Because that’s what big brothers do.
Pride
Before Horus was born, Ra was the favorite of the siblings. Ra was the big brother that always took care of his younger siblings, the one who would beat up the local kids that made fun of them. He was the cat’s meow, the cool kid on the block. All his siblings liked him the most, and if Ra was on your side, you always won. Even when Horus was born, Ra was still the coolest, for a while.
But Horus got older and took to his terrible twos, and Ra realized that his light was fading. The kids loved Horus. He was funny; hilarious, even. He was becoming the family’s center of attention, the sun they all circled. That didn’t sit right at first, at least, not until an irritated twelve year old Ra asked his parents what Horus was in Egyptian mythology, hoping that would explain the sudden popularity of his youngest sibling, the one who fell asleep a lot.
What he got was a lesson: he and Horus were so close they were once the same god in certain circles. Together, they were Ra-Horakhty. Horus was a falcon, just like him. Ra was the sun in Horus’s sky. That seemed to sit well with the oldest. He thought and thought, and decided he rather liked this analogy. It sounded good in his head, when he thought long and hard about it. Horus was his framework, the artistry. Without Horus, Ra was nothing: a big star in the sky. But with Horus, Ra made beautiful sunsets, sunbeams, and, best of all, he could hide for a while, behind the clouds.
So Ra grew tired of the spotlight and willingly handed it to Horus, his sky. He hid behind the clouds, occasionally shining out, briefly, to ensure that he wasn’t forgotten.
Because that’s what big brothers do.
Sloth
When Ra was little, he cried all the time. When Sakhmet fell and scraped her knee, Ra was the one who cried as his parents put a Band-Aid on it. When Isis fell out of a tree, Ra was the one who screamed. When Osiris was picked on by a bunch of children because he looked like a girl, Ra was the one who stood and sniffled, upset by their hurtful words. His parents were worried- Ra felt everything. When the other children were happy, he was joyous- but when they were sad, he was depressed and sobbing. Everything was amplified times twenty.
And then it stopped.
Once Ra went to Kocher, his emotions were plugged up. The more he felt, the more the other students hurt him, so he began to shut off his emotions one by one. When he once would have laughed at a joke, only the faintest trace of a smile would stay on his face. Instead of crying, he stared blankly into space. His parents didn’t notice this emotional constipation until it was irreversible. Instead of being upset, he was irritated- annoyed that others had so much emotion and couldn’t calm themselves.
When he was assigned to take care of his siblings, the younger ones learned fast that, unlike when they were little, Ra did not laugh as much when he was younger. He did not cry or yell. Instead, he gave looks- a bemused quirk of the eyebrow, a subtle frown of disapproval. A young Sakhmet once asked if he lost his happy, and Ra thought for a moment before answering: ‘It’s not lost. It’s just... Put away for a while.’
Ra had not lost all his emotion. In fact, he wasn’t even suppressing it, like his parents suspected. No, he was just tired of reacting to every little thing. He felt for his siblings and for the people around him, but showing the proper amount of emotion was just too much work. It was too much work to work his siblings out of the emotional chaos he threw them into.
So, in theory, if he kept himself calm, and apathetic, they would also calm down. Ra kept his emotions in check, not because he feared them, but because it took too much effort to calm his siblings down if he got worked up. He had to keep calm in a crisis, even if, on the inside, he was terrified.
Because that’s what big brothers do.
Wrath
Very few things in this world make Ra angry. Telling you what those things are probably is not a good idea, for two reasons. One, they change on a regular basis, and two, face it, you would try them to see what will happen. Let’s say, for instance, that you were to do one of these unspeakable acts. You cannot perform one of these acts on Ra himself, because he will not get angry for you doing something to him. He cares very little for rabble rousers trying to get a rise out of him. They mean nothing to him, because they aren’t worth the time it would take to insult them.
However, if you hurt one of his family members, a fate worse than death would befall you.
One must remember: Ra has super strength. He can easily rip your arms out of your sockets if you even lay a hand on his siblings.
