Birth of a bundle of joy.
On December 8th 1995, during a snow storm little Trapper Jane Petano came into the world without complication and to proud parents James and Patty Petano of La Mirada, California. Trapper is the couple’s third child of six.
Family.
One can tell that she is enjoys being with her family, the way she talks about her family, there is always a smile when you ask her about them. She is most close to her mother, Patty, to whom she goes for everything, from the smallest boo boo to her biggest fears. Her father, James, is the foundation of this big family, slow to anger and quick to love. Of course she is close with all her sisters and brothers but feels most close to her older brother, Quinn, who she goes to when her mother isn’t around.
Her father, a military sergeant with the Navy, died in active combat in Iraq two years ago. Her older brother just last month moved out with his new girl friend, Reed, being deaf, would continue to search for work while helping around the family home and assisting in caring for the twins. Psalm, who is blind, would continue to go to the school for the blind. As for Trapper, she would have to learn to come to grips with her ability as she left for The Hammel Institute.
Members of her family are as follows: Mother-Patty (45- homemaker/mother), Father-James (43-deceased), Oldest brother-Quinn (34- Firefighter), Brother-Reed (31 -Deaf, Unemployed), Trapper (20- student), Younger sister-Psalm (18-Blind, student), Twin sisters- Banji and Gemini (15- Students)
Family pets: Foxx - German Sheppard (Psalms seeing eye dog), Red - German Sheppard (Reed’s hearing aide dog), Echo - German Sheppard (Family friend and protector), Kippy - Mut mix (unknown age, pound rescue), Kit - DSH cat(family pet)
School.
Trapper always seemed to have a knack with her school work. She loves school and her favorite subjects are reading, writing and science with her weaker subjects as math and history. She has a few friends but doesn’t consider herself ‘popular’.
Politics
This is one subject you don't want to talk about around Trapper as she hates it so much because of all the mud swinging in campaigns, the lies, the lack of empathy to the people as a whole, and something she’d rather not speak about.
Sports.
One thing that Trapper is good at is sports from her sailing and surfing, it is one area where she can forget all her troubles and just let herself go and live thru that sport.
Likes.
Sailing, surfing, animals, reading, telling jokes, snow, her mothers chicken soup , working with animals, volunteering, hanging with friends, Christmas, the color blue, good old movies, camping and hiking.
Dislikes.
Hates politics, prunes, migraines, the color red, bad jokes, Halloween, getting wet in a cold rain, fire, snakes, spiders, icy roads and people who tail gate, going though toll booths, getting hurt.
Appearance.
Standing at about five foot two she most certainly would not stand out in a crowd, her weight of one hundred and sixteen pounds fits her frame well. Her fair skin, long blonde hair that tangles so easily and her steel blue eyes are what people would notice most about her. Tending towards fashion, she is known to wear bright colored tops with layers and slacks or form fitting jeans with hiking boots. Hand me downs are common and sometimes a joy to wear as her older brothers have good taste in tops and the larger fit allow her to feel more freedom in them. Trapper likes light make up to cover any flaws that may pop up.
Trapper has double piercings in each ear, as well as a scar over the clavicle as the result of a bike accident when she was five.
Personality.
Trapper is confident in who she is and where and what she wants to be on her way to becoming a Forensic Science Technician. She doesn’t hide her feelings like most teens do, but says what she feels, even if the truth is hurtful. Trapper is strong-willed and a perfectionist in everything she does, almost to a fault. Speaking of faults, Trapper is short fused, she is unable to take criticism about her own faults and she hates change as she always needs to maintain control. She also tends to pick at her fingers, so much so that they sometimes bleed. She also drinks way too much cola. Currently her ability has thrown a wrench into her once ordered life, leaving her feeling uncomfortable and out of control; leaving her family has also hurt her deeply.
A whisper in the dark.
Two weeks before her fifteenth birthday Trapper had had a bad migraine that lasted throughout the day. She’d just fallen asleep when the family cat jumped onto her bed, snuggled up by her neck, and woke her up. As she petted the cat, she thought she had heard “more,” but quickly dismissed the thought. But when it kept reoccurring, she turned on the light to see if there was anyone else in her room. Of course no one was there except her and the cat, Kit, who ran out of the room when the lights came on. Trapper quickly dismissed the episode as a side effect of her migraine and went back to sleep.
When barks bite.
Having had forgotten the little incident of two weeks before, Trapper was excited to be celebrating her fifteenth birthday with her family and a few friends. It had been the best birthday party, complete with a pony to ride, so to say that Trapper was overjoyed was an understatement -- she was overwhelmed, but in a very good way. After having opened presents and being dumped into the family pool, she was exhausted! However, since her mom wanted to take pictures of her on the pony before it left, she complied. Atop the pony and with flashbulbs flashing, she heard “uggh, heavy” but didn’t think much of it until she heard it again. Looking around, she couldn’t place the voice of the person who has “heavy;“ again she dismissed it and went about her day.
As her friends were leaving, Foxx-Psalms’ seeing-eye dog starts pawing at her. Trapper tries to shoo the dog away and tells it to go to Psalm, but the dog continues to paw at her. “OUT OUT OUT,” she heard. Trapper’s jaw drops open as she stands there with the dog pawing at her. “OUT.” She can’t believe it. She’s just heard the dog talk!
After taking the dog out, she thought about telling her mother, but she didn’t. After all, who would believe her anyway?
A ruff time.
During the next several days Trapper experienced even more incidents of hearing not only the family pets, but other animals in the neighborhood “speak” to her. Afraid and thinking she was having delusions, Trapper told her mother who, of course, didn’t believe she was really hearing animals speak, but offered to bring her to the doctor if Trapper thought that would help. Not knowing what else to do, she agreed to go to the doctor.
At the doctor’s office, after having questioned her in depth, even the doctor had his doubts about Trapper’s ability to hear animals speak. His thinking was that she may have experienced some kind of mental break and thus ordered her an overnight stay at the hospital for evaluation.
A new leash on life.
While she was at the hospital, a man named Dr. James Campbell explained to Trapper, her mother, and her doctor that she was definitely not crazy, but felt she was a “meta human” with a wonderful gift. He explained how The Hammel Institute could help her develop and control her ability.
Her mother agrees to let Trapper go to the Institute and, after being released from the hospital, Trapper believed she was getting a new leash on life.
Even though she thinks this is a neat development in her life, she openly admit that she is scared and uncomfortable.
And now a new beginning….
