Leila made a face. "All right, point taken. Still. Shakespeare. Lots of using from other sources. Not that it's a bad thing, I mean, it's what makes it all that much better, right? And it's not like we don't all steal from him. Disney's a blatant one, but there's a bunch of others." Part of Leila just loved this sort of arguing--she didn't actually think it would have been better for Shakespeare to have written references to everything within his plays. Though actually having written them down himself might've been a good idea.
"All right, maybe you're right. The lack of reprogramming is good. Though it could be argued that we're being reprogrammed constantly, anyway. I mean, circumstances work on us to change our opinions of the world and the way we live...and just growing up with our parents would have done a lot to change us as well. Not that it's all in the nurturing, I admit there's some part of nature involved, but I guess I'm just a strong believer in societal influences shaping a person."
Leila nodded solemnly. "No, your English is good. I think it's really cool that you speak Zulu, though. I only took Spanish in high school, and I've even forgotten most of that. It must be so amazing to be bilingual! I always thought that I wanted to marry someone who spoke another language, so that my kids would be bilingual." Whoops, did that come out as forward as she thought it might have? Her neck flushed slightly as she realized what she'd said, and she took a large drink of her water before attacking her sandwich again. If her mouth was full she couldn't manage to stick her foot in it. She gave herself a minute before saying anything else.
"Well, I hadn't really thought too much about it...but I don't think I'd want to be on the city council. But nothing too big, I mean, I can't expect to run for the House of Representatives immediately or anything like that. But maybe a state representative, just for the county. And then I'd actually get to start influencing laws, instead of just fiddling around in the courtroom. I just feel like we're not getting anywhere because we don't have anyone on our side in legislation." She frowned and took a large bite of fries as she thought.
"I haven't really thought too much about my future. But I don't know that I just want to be a lawyer forever. I just don't really want to leave Blue alone. He needs me, even if he doesn't like to admit it."
