The reconciliation had been over a year ago at this point.
That should have been the end of misery, and the beginning of renewed companionship. The beginning of renewed bliss.
Though there were no marriage vows he intended to stay with Sean until death. Even for better or worse.
This definitely counted as worse.
He had been settling into a routine. Wake up, have breakfast and coffee with Sean, go to work, come home, dinner, baking. Usually there was cuddling in there somewhere, among other signs of physical affection.
His routine had been broken. Not only that, but Sean had been wrested from him through...
Well, he honestly wasn't sure what to call it. A miserable coincidence, perhaps?
In any event, Sean was no longer Sean. He had all of Sean's memories and skills and even most of his personality, but he wasn't Sean.
He was now merged with Cobalt, an entirely new individual in two bodies.
Sean was now a Gestalt.
Josh was trying to make the best of this. After all, he couldn't very well leave, not after all the promises he had made both aloud and in his heart. He didn't think he would be able to survive without Sean.
But he wasn't sure that this was with Sean, either. It was, however, the closest he was going to get.
Still, he was thoroughly unhappy that his partner was a gestalt. Seeing Sean together with Cobalt filled him with a visceral dread he couldn't shake, even with all the affection and love for his best friend and partner. He found himself reluctant to return home after work.
But when Cobalt wasn't around it wasn't so bad. He could pretend that there wasn't anything wrong, that the quirks of personality that had vanished were just the result of inevitable change.
Pretend that he wasn't afraid.
But of course he was, and as much as he tried to pretend otherwise he couldn't entirely hide it. For instance, when he opened the door, briefcase in hand, the first action was to scope out the living room, trying to see if there was one or two waiting for him.
"Sean? I'm home. Are you...ahhh..." He wanted to ask alone, but it had become apparent very quickly when this whole incident had started that Sean and Cobalt no longer considered one another's presence to be that of company.
"Are you here?"
