“Another thing that’s changed,” Lani pointed out giving Odion a smile. Perhaps it was like the tongue thing he had picked up from Adrianna, after being around someone for a long time perhaps Odion had picked something up from Lani. Lani was starting to figure out that he was learning from Odion as well, he was just being stubborn about it. Lani cared about what Odion thought about him, not what other people thought about it. There were many people that he cared deeply for and their opinions mattered to him but the population in general, people he didn’t know. Their opinions didn’t matter. His friends and Odion’s opinions mattered. He looked into Odion’s eyes. They were always the ones that were the hardest to deal with in the nightmares, they were the ones that hurt and healed the most. “Hmmm,” Lani blinked not realizing that he had been lost in his thoughts humming to himself until Odion’s question broke into his consciousness. He scratched at his chin and narrowed his eyes at Odion as he thought. “Sometimes you just know,” Lani replied, “Sometimes it’s the right thing to do. But I see your point.”
“Does it have to be a person at all? Plenty of people get their guidance from the world around them. Those that have the ability to open their eyes, perhaps. Maybe that’s why people invent gods.” Lani was rather cynical when it came to gods. That was why he had taken to blaming the universe for most of his problems. Lani opened his mouth to say something then Odion took the words right out of his mouth. He paused to gather his thoughts and looked into Odion’s eyes. “You’re too afraid of being hurt to let people get close. Odion, you just need to give people a chance. I’m sure… I know they’ll surprise you.” He was still standing by the idea that Odion needed to meet more people. “But you know what’s even better than that. You get to care about people in return.” That was the sweeter part of the deal in Lani’s opinion. “Maybe if you let someone you can learn what it’s like to have someone care.” Lani paused and looked at Odion for a moment contemplating what to say next. “It’s human nature to err. We make mistakes and sometimes people get hurt because of it, people we care about,” Lani started, “That’s why forgiveness is so hard. Do you really want to shut everyone out because you’re afraid of getting hurt because people are made to make mistakes?”
Lani closed his eyes. He would never be so cowardly again. He had been so afraid for Odion and Adrianna and afraid of his boss and afraid of his power and it had paralyzed him. The blond shook his head at Odion. “Don’t apologize,” Lani said forcing a smile. This wasn’t easy to say but he had to say it. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I didn’t have a plan in Boston and I just… stood there.” He gestured in a manner of frustration. He couldn’t believe that he had just been paralyzed so much that he let them get kidnapped in the first place. He could have warned Odion about it and Adrianna too but he hadn’t because he didn’t want to them to know that he was stuck on a leash. And in Adrianna’s case he wanted her to like him for the person he was trying to be not who he was. She loved the person who was carefree and laughed easily. That wasn’t the person that Lani was. The Lani that hid behind the masks and the real Lani wasn’t someone he liked. He had a hard time looking this Lani in the eye in the mirror. He wanted to change, he didn’t want to be the kind of person that would be paralyzed like that again.
It startled him but it also made him smile when he couldn’t pull his hand away. It was the knowledge that everything he had done and everything that he had put Odion through he had still been forgiven and they were still here. They were still looking each other in the eye and Odion had been hurt by him and he was still here. And Odion had hurt him and he was still here. They were both contradicting themselves by being where they were right now. Odion with his fear of caring and Lani with his fear of not having a plan.
Turning from the stars to Odion Lani let his jaw drop a little bit. He laughed as it seemed like Odion came to the same realization. Lani grinned at Odion. “I know you’ll tell me to shut up if I start getting annoying,” Lani teased. “You’re gonna get a kick out of this movie,” Lani told him. He could say whether Odion would love it or just be annoyed because of the understanding he had of time.
Lani had taken the time they had been separated today to clean up so that Odion would have a place to sit. At least, he had taken all of the clutter and hidden it in his closet. His bed was still messy but at least it wasn’t covered with random things anymore. He was on a date with Odion. A legitimate dinner and a movie date. It was more than a little mind blowing. His heart hadn’t stopped racing all night and it was a wasn’t about to start slowing it seemed. He couldn’t figure out what they were doing and he couldn’t figure out whether it was a good idea but he didn’t have a plan he was just doing.
He opened the door for Odion. “I don’t think you’re prepared for the amount of epic-ness you are about to witness.” Lani really loved Back to the Future, poor Odion didn’t even know that there were three of them. He had been more than excited when Odion had gifted him with the movie. He walked through the common room and opened his room. He didn’t have to look around a lot for the movie. He could play the movie on his not so legally obtained laptop that was probably the best thing they had at the moment. The dorms here were spectacular but they weren’t perfect and Lani didn’t have a television. He tossed the movie at Odion for a moment as he wandered around his room trying to figure out where to set up seats or what. He unwrapped his scarf and tossed it over his desk chair the coat he had on soon following.
