Several weeks had gone by since Josh had begun his weekly baking lessons with Riley. He had spent more on eggs and milk and butter than ever he had in the past, back when his idea of preparing food had been to slather peanut butter on a slice of bread or microwave some oatmeal. Granted, cookies and brownies and the occasional pound cake weren't particularly healthier but it turned out they were also very easy to bake.
He had never expected this when he'd asked his friend for help. Had he known just how simple baking really was he perhaps would have attempted it earlier, but his insecurities had lead him to dismissing any attempts people made at assuring him it wasn't that difficult. Particularly when Sean said as much, because Sean was the smartest, most skilled person he knew and therefore anything Sean thought was easy wasn't necessarily within his own grasp.
However, weeks of practice and he was now comfortable with the idea of baking at least simple treats, and he made a point of practicing every day. He hadn't said anything to Sean about it, had merely offered the treats without comment.
And because it was a Friday evening and he was home before Sean he decided to forgo reading the paper or surfing the web for news and instead out came the measuring cups and the sugar and flour and baking soda and on went the oven. He was most comfortable with cookies as they had been his first lesson, and while he was supposed to be practicing lemon bars he was out of lemon zest. Oh, well; he would get some from the store tomorrow. One skipped day wouldn't hurt.
It wasn't long before the first tray of cookies was in the oven and the aroma of freshly baking chocolate chip cookies filled the air.
When he'd first begun baking with Riley he had been terrified of leaving the kitchen while his treats were in the oven; now he was comfortable wandering into the living room to snag a book to read while he waited.
