"Mirage, do you like it here with my dads?"Niko questioned as he gazed at an upside down image of his dog. In his hand he clutched tightly to her leash while his other hand rested on his chest. She glanced back at the boy laying on the log in acknowledgement, but she offered no response to his question. Niko shifted, accidentally stirring more dirt into his blond hair before he spoke again.
"I made a promise to James, sort of. I wanted to go back home and I promised him I'd be old enough for Hammel when I was eleven. He didn't let me leave then- I was just nine. Now I am eleven, so I really am old enough."Niko explained to the dog. Realizing that the boy wasn't going to leave her be, she trotted over to him and settled against the log next to him. That made him smile. He rolled over from his back to his stomach, resettling on the log so that his chin was resting on his folded arms.
"After today, I can't be sent home anymore. I don't really want to go back there anyway- I really don't remember it. This is home. Do you think you'll like it here?"Niko prompted again as though he really expected an answer. Silence proceeded the question until he realized with a start that he wasn't supposed to be gone too long. Niko pulled Chase's phone from his pants pocket, nervously checking the time. Without a word, the blond was on his feet and leading the startled dog back toward the house at a quickened pace.
When Niko and Mirage reached the house, Niko hushed the dog, as he carefully opened the front door and led her inside. After kneeling down, to pull off his shoes and remove Mirage's leash, he moved quietly, watching for Chase to return his phone and keeping his eye out for James so that he wouldn't notice the dirt now clinging to Niko's body. Niko really should have been more careful and he knew it- James didn't need to tell him so. Admittedly, James had every right to.
