To the room at large, the recruiter waved his hand towards the coffee table that already had a few gifts sitting on it. James and Chase had already given Nikki his presents from them, but the ones from his extended family had been kept until then as well. "Gifts can go over on the coffee table, and any food should go on the kitchen counter. I can find a space in the fridge if you need that too." It wouldn't be easy, since he liked to keep their kitchen well-stocked, but he'd find a way.

He turned back to the other recruiter and smiled widely at her and her son. "Oh, I'd love to take him!" James didn't need to be asked twice before picking the baby up from his mother's arms. He loved babies, and he loved the mostly-toothless grin he got from Tory as he held him. He didn't have long hair to grab, but it seemed his tie--today bedecked in birthday balloons--worked just as well. "And come in, come in!" People kept coming in, and he was happy to have the house so full.

After greeting Rome and Kiko, he'd let his best friend off to play with the kids, and he didn't hear talk of the "treasure" they were planning to steal. If he had, he would have tried to put a stop to that game. Oh well, Roman was just risking being seated at the kids table at Christmas then. He did turn to Sean, however, and grinned. "I'm going to be a knight instead, since pirates don't have butlers." Maybe it lacked context, but if the kids were roping everyone into the party into declaring allegiance to one group or another, he was going to be a knight.

Niko took the present when it was handed to him, offering a smile to Rome.

"Thank you,"Niko replied. But presents, however fun they may be, weren't exactly the first thing on his mind. He nodded when he was introduced to Kiko. "It's nice to finally meet you, Kiko,"Niko chimed in politely. He was anxious for Rome to get away, too, he just couldn't say so. It felt almost defiant to lead Rome away from Kiko, though. Niko did it with a grin and a definite excitement to his step.

Once he was among an assembled group- the pirates, it seemed, Niko noticed Gwynie.

"Hi, Gwynie,"Niko greeted, a smile forming at his lips. To her question, he murmured softly, as to not interrupt anyone else. "Jordan says we should play pirates and ninjas and my dad says it's okay."

Niko was sort of glad he didn't tell her any more than that, because much to his surprise, Rome changed the game completely. Well, sort of. Instead of being just a competition between pirates and ninjas (which would probably be both loud and, undoubtedly, dangerous with a group of meta human children involved), Rome suggested a sort of quest for the pirates. Now, the only question was, how had Rome known they were going to play? How did he find time to hide treasure for them? Maybe it was better left a mystery.

"Yeah, let's do it!"Niko agreed without hesitation. Then, the door. "Hold on, let me get that." Niko slipped off into the crowd to get the door. Though he'd given her an invitation and wanted her there, it still startled him to open the door and see Cat.

"I'm glad you're here! Come on,"Niko greeted, grabbing her hand. He could see she was holding a bag, so he grabbed her free hand instead, his own present from Rome now tucked underneath his arm as he guided her through the crowd of people, back to his group.

"Cat's going to be a pirate with us, because we need someone really smart to find the treasure, and she knows how to make pirate flags."Niko informed the group. Because, clearly, it made perfect sense that the group should benefit from a very intelligent flag-maker. Really, Niko just didn't want one of his best friends to be too shy- there were a lot of new people. Besides, he didn't really want her to be on his cousin Jordan's team, even if he did like Jordan.

Josh leaned into Sean's embrace as the taller man began to deliberate about which team they should join. Of course, there was no question in his mind that whatever teams there were they would be on the same side; through thirty three years of party games they were always a team together.

"No, that's a valid point," He agreed, craning to look around at all the attendees. Children abounded, which was sure to make Sean very happy. This also meant he needed to be careful about his alcohol consumption; he tried not to get drunk around his nieces and nephews, and he felt that the parents of children he didn't really know would also appreciate it if he remained sober.

At the mention of knights as a third option his face lit up, his interest piqued; he had the heart of a history nerd sometimes. "Oh, knights sounds far better than stabbing people in the back or stealing from merchants."

He tilted his head to look up at Sean. "So shall we join Sir James as noble knights, fighting pirates and ninjas and rescuing peddlers and fair damsels from distress?"

The telepath gave his greetings to Ginny and Cat as they arrived, before they disappeared to go with James and the other children respectively. There was an abundance of people here, which was to be expected; it wasn’t a party at the Campbell home unless there were more guests than a person had fingers and toes combined. The joy and excitement on everyone’s faces also contributed to it being a proper Campbell party.

However, because there were so many children and this was an adoption celebration and child’s birthday party, Sean also resolved to limit his drinking. He would have a glass or two, but would leave it there. These were his coworkers and friends and their children, and nobody needed to see him lose his sobriety. He had more than enough self-control to achieve this goal.

Feeling Josh lean against him, Sean tightened his arm slightly around the other man’s shoulders, pulling him closer. “Knights do have a degree of honor absent from pirates, and it wouldn’t involve appropriating someone else’s cultural heritage,” the telepath agreed with a nod. There had been Irish knights.

Besides, given Josh’s interest in mythology, he thought his partner would enjoy this the most. Hearing the attorney’s agreement proved him correct. “I think we should join Sir James in his efforts to keep the peace and order while pirates and ninjas are fighting in the middle of the living room.”

Sean then switched to telepathy, projecting only to his partner, That is, if you think you could handle calling me ‘Sir’ anything in public. The telepathic remark was followed by a smile, because he was merely teasing the other man.

If Jordan was a huffing sort of person, he would have huffed. Heavily. The adults were here and, as predicted, they were fudging the game to fit their own rules. But he didn't know what else to expect. And once you let Uncle James slide, how were you supposed to keep anyone else from making their own rules? This was the problem with making exceptions for family.

"You and I are ninjas," he said, sidling over to the woman who has called out. He didn't recognize her--she must not work at the school. But if she was willing to play, he'd take the help. "And Uncle Chase is too, but I have a feeling he might have a bias for one of the other sides." He shot a look toward his uncle James.

He ordinarily wouldn't have been very excited to see Gwynie, seeing as she was a girl and he didn't even know her very well, but the idea of another kid--someone who would actually play right was appealing in itself. "That's right! And you should be a ninja, because there's already too many pirates, I think." And there could never be enough ninjas.

When Ginny came in he tried to sidle in next to her as well. "Ginny!" he hissed out of the side of his mouth as he stood next to her. "We're going to be ninjas and stop the pirates from trying to steal the treasure. Also, I need to spy on all the adults. You up for it? Niko's a pirate with Rome, and James isn't playing. At least not right." Belatedly he realized she was fumbling with some stuff, which he reached out to take from her hands. He took the cupcakes and started carrying them toward the kitchen. "So, um. How've you been?"

Spying Niko again, he made a quick decision. He dumped the cupcakes haphazardly on the table and ran toward his younger cousin, pulling out the plastic katana at his waist as he went. He swiped the blade across Niko's back, effectively cutting him in half. "Ha!" he called out. "Ninja attack! You're dead, unless, of course, you're one of the cursed pirates who cannot be killed." And with that he smiled and ran off again, trying to be simultaneously as obtrusive and unobtrusive as possible.

No one was going to talk about important stuff if they thought kids were listening in on the conversation. So the goal was to try to get them to think Jordan wasn't actually paying attention. And then he'd wait for any good information.
