The Basics
Name: Stefan Orion Spencer (His parents claimed they didn’t notice what his initials spelled)
Nicknames: Uncle Swag (His nephew is the main one who calls him this, although others have taken a liking to it and Stefan feels no need to ask them to stop.)
Age: 55
Orientation: Bisexual
Desired Rank/Job: Local – Newspaper Journalist
Powers: Body Language Analysis – Stefan has the ability to read others’ body language. This allows him to anticipate their actions, detect if they are lying, and to a small degree know what they are thinking/feeling. He can ‘read’ multiple people at once, but his ability works best if he focuses on just one person. Since he has no way to turn off this sense, in very large groups Stefan has trouble focusing and concentrating. He also develops headaches if he spends too much time in a situation where he is over-stimulated by large groups.
Stefan would say that the main draw back to his power is that he can tell when people are lying and usually is able to tell what they think of him. And sometimes, he’d rather not know.
Play By: Hugh Laurie

General Appearance: Stefan is a strong believer in good first impressions, so he always tries to look his best. Not matter the occasion, he is usually seen wearing a suit and tie. At the very least he has on a nice jacket or a button up shirt.
Although he has facial hair, he never lets it grow too long on get unkempt; he manages to pull of the “scruffy” appearance quiet well. He never dyes his hair to keep out the grays believing that it adds to his classy and charming appearance.
Although his is usually seen with a cane, this is also more for his image than actual need. His leg only bothers him when the weather out is bad. He has quiet the collection of canes, but usually carries a sleek black one with a silver handle. He keeps the more flashy ones for special occasions.
Stefan drinks heavily, but is rarely seen in public sloppily wasted. He saves that for when he is alone and depressed.
Personality: Stefan is the essence of a social butterfly. He hates being alone and tries to surround himself with people every chance he gets. He loves to talk about himself, although he often exaggerates the stories of his past. But he is also a good listener. Especially when he finds the other person attractive.
Partially because of his power, but also his generally personality, Stefan is one of those people who tends to always know the right thing to say, when is a good time to change the subject, and how to drag a quiet person out of his or her shell.
His has a great deal of friends and a good supply of friends with benefits. But he’s not the sort to brag about either of those. Although in his college years he boasted to his buddies about which who he had hooked up with the previous night, he grew out of that before he reached his thirties. Although he still has good luck in the romance department, he doesn’t believe that private matters like that should be shared. Although he will admit to being a ladies’-man, and a mans’-man, he won’t list the evidence for supporting that anymore.
Stefan is very laid back in general, but always up for a good time. Whether that be a candle lit dinner, a night out drinking with friends, or just watching a good movie. If it means being with another person, he’s there.
Stefan has very strict morals when it comes to how people should be treated. He can’t stand to see another person in pain. Although he does a fair amount of teasing himself, especially with those he is close to, he understands that there is a point when harmless teasing turns into something hurtful. Sometimes, his moral code gets him into trouble. For example if he sees a man treating a woman in a way he thinks is wrong he steps into defend her. He gets told to mind his own business, but he’s not very good at listening to that.
Stefan does not do well when he is alone. He spends a lot of nights drinking by himself and waiting for the sun to come up so that he can find someone to be with. His thoughts race a lot when there is no one around and therefore no body language to keep his mind busy.

History
Stefan was born in a small town not far from Pilot Ridge. His father worked at a factory while his mother stayed home to handle the children and run the house. Although it was his father who brought home the paycheck, even at a young age Stefan understood that it was his mother that ran the show. His father and mother got along fairly well, but when things were tough he would disappear to the local bars. His drinking never seemed to interrupt his life, but a lot of Stefan’s memories from when he was younger are of his father with some sort of drink in his hand. In fact, at age nine, it was Stefan’s father who gave him his first taste of beer.
Even as a child, Stefan loved to be around others. He was never very good at entertaining himself and instead spent every waking moment rounding up the other boys in the area to play sports or just hang out. When they were busy he would make due with playing with his younger sister.
During his pre-teen, Stefan got very good at reading others. He also got better at sports, especially ones where he was in close contact with the other players. If it wasn’t for the headaches and concentration issues that also started around this time, his ability might have gone unnoticed for even longer than it did. But the blood test the doctors took revealed what was the true reason for his sudden gifts.
Stefan thrived during his years at Hammel. His ability and his personality made it easy for him to make friends. Although sometimes his grades were a little lacking, he never had trouble finding someone to tutor him, or even let him cheat off of them. During his last few years at Hammel, Stefan became something of a ladies man. He was often caught after dark sneaking to and from the girls’ dorms.
With graduation approaching, Stefan still had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. He applied to college mainly because he had loved life at Hammel so much. Living side-by-side with the other students meant having an endless supply of people to interact with.
While at college, Stefan discovered two new loves. The first was boxing. He had be in a few fights as a kids, but now that he had developed better control over his ability he excelled at it. He could easily read where his opponent was going to move next, so he knew how to avoid it and launch his own. The second was alcohol.
He had never drank much, a few beers here and there when he and some of the older students at Hammel snuck out for some fun. But in college he spent more and more time hanging out in bars after class, and usually leaving with a girl or two to keep him company for the night. Although he was never in any sort of relationship that lasted longer than breakfast the next morning, Stefan was known around the campus for his charming ways.
It was also during college that Stefan started bring home guys as well, although this was less well known around campus. Not that Stefan ever felt ashamed about his sexuality, but at the time a lot of others did. He tended to brag about his way with the ladies, but he knew that the guys he hooked up with would be less impressive. To him, company was company. When asked why he was bisexual, he would quote Woody Allen and say “Being bisexual doubles your chances of a date Saturday night”.
After college, Stefan tended bar and would sometimes enter in boxing competitions. He also started drinking more heavily. His work at the bar guaranteed that he could spend time around others, but it didn’t always mean he would have someone to spend time with after the bar closed. On those nights, Stefan would help himself to a few more drinks before making the drive back to his place. On one of those nights he wrapped his car around a telephone pole.
His car was totaled and Stefan’s leg had to be reconstructed using screws and a metal rode. His boxing days where over and his friends and family started to get concerned about his drinking. He took it easy for the next year or so, but in the end he went back to drinking the way his always had. He was just more careful about finding a ride home.
Too keep up with the appearance of drinking less, Stefan decided it was time for a career change as well. As much as he loved bartending, he knew his friends and family wouldn’t see it as a smart decision.
If you asked Stefan how he got into journalism, he would blame it on a night of heavy drinking. But it’s a little more complicated than that. True, alcohol was involved (as is usually the case in much of Stefan’s life) but the drinking was only the reason for him being at the right place.
He was out drinking with a friend. As the two of them stumbled home, they witness some cops arresting a homeless man for vagrancy. The friends intervened and ended up in jail themselves. Stefan spent the night ranting out the injustice of the system. To get him to shut up, his friend told him to stop whining and do something about it. So Stefan decided to try.
He had never felt like he was a great writer, but Stefan always knew how to say the right thing to influence people’s emotions. He quickly found that his written word seemed to carry the same power behind it.
What started as a few letters to the editor, turned into a job offer, and then a career. Although with his charisma, Stefan could have risen on the company ladder, he chose to remain a humble reporter. He loved writing the human interest stories that really touched the public and moved them into action.
Although Stefan had never strayed too far from Pilot Ridge, he moved back into the main part of town and got a job at the local paper when his sister gave birth to her first child. Stefan had always loved children and slipped easily into the “Fun Uncle” role. He would take her children out shopping, spoil them gloriously, fill them up on sugar, and then drop them back at home to run wild.
Stefan had barely gotten over the death of his father, when his sister passed away as well. Most people would not consider Stefan a “family man”, but he did his best to help raise his nieces and nephews when he could. This mostly consisted of spoiling them, although he did try to give them some advice as well.
Stefan still works at the newspaper, still drinks heavily, and still does his part to charm the ladies and gentlemen he meets. Although he has never settled down with any of them, he has his share of midnight rendezvous.
