Questions about the Gestalt Pair

Hello!

I have a question about the gestalt pair. From what I understand, the pair is, eventually, one being in the body of two. I was wondering whether the twins must be identical twins or if they can be fraternal twins (or... anything else). Biologically, it would make sense for this power to only work for identical twins. I have been curious about what it would be like for pair to be made up of a boy and a girl. In one way I simply want to play with the idea that personality may not be effected as strongly as most believe by gender. Also that gender isn't always as straight forward. As an effect of the connection, unlike same-gender pairs, the individuals would be effected physically. Such as the brain sending off incorrect or inconsistent hormone signals. In my mind I was thinking of neither being a girl or boy by the end.
