Conversation with a rockstar(Patch)

Mia walked into the auditorium yet again. She has been spending a lot of time the this certain building, it was one of the few places she felt like she could relax and just forget all her worries. Speaking of worries, she felt like she was getting better; with everything that has happened to her. She wanted all her worries to just fade away and leave her alone; it was easier when she was with other people. She could push them away and act like nothing was wrong; but when she was alone it was like her worries were water threatening to drown her. So having a place like the auditorium where she could so easily forget everything that was going on outside the building was her lifesaver.

Mia walked onto the stage and set her bag on the piano bench. She looked at the rows, and rows of empty seats. Missing the days where she sang on stage and the seats weren’t empty; they had been full of people. But that was when she was in a band, before her world came crashing down on her from the car crash her father and brothers were involved in. She sighed as she searched for her ipod and then moved to plug it into the speakers. Playing ‘make a move’ by Icon for Hire.

Mia walked back to the stage, grabbing one of the wireless microphones as she did so. Turning it on she took a deep breath and started singing and moving along with the song playing. Nothing felt quite as amazing as the feeling at performing on stage to her; even if there wasn’t an audience, she still felt the surge of adrenaline cursing through her veins.

November was finally coming to and end, and December hung just around the corner. It was an understatement to say that it was Patch's favorite time of the year. Ever since that fateful fever he had when he was thirteen years old, his temperature really never dropped back down to a normal level.. well.. normal among non-meta humans. What could he say? He was hot. All kidding aside, the cold air on his skin on the walk from where he had been studying, too the auditorium was nice. He wore a gray long sleeved shirt with his regular blue jeans.. sure it was a little more chilly than he had expected it to be, but it was still nice.

He never really even meant to walk towards the auditorium, he was caught up by the weather.. and just sort of ended up there. This was a place he hardly ever traversed, unless he needed a quiet space to read, and the library was crowded. He could have turned back, but as soon as he entered the building, singing and music invaded his ears. It sounded like someone had left a radio going on a rock station, or something like it. He wasn't much of a music guy. Never the less, it drew him out into the main room of the building, the actual auditorium. It was pretty big, at one end sat a stage and rows upon rows of chairs stood back from that. On stage was a pink haired girl singing a song, and she was good, but it was also ending...

Immediately he felt like he was intruding, maybe it was a private practice session or something.. if he just left before she saw him. He tripped. Falling into a row of chairs off to his right, right as the song ended. He cursed himself silently for that and quickly attempted to pick himself up, only to fall again. "Ugh.." He whined, instead of trying to run out of the building, he now only looked up towards the ceiling in defeat and waited for something to happen.

Winter was also Mia’s favorite time of the year; she had missed the cold and snow so very much it was overbearing for her to be in the Vermont heat. Coming from Barrow, Alaska she just wasn’t used to any kind of warm or hot weather; it was something she was still getting used to. But she never complained and did all her usual stuff like running. Though, it was going to be harder to go running in the snow; she would have to settle for walking.

Mia had seen the boy walk into the auditorium; mostly because he had paused in the middle of the walkway at the same time, she had looked out at the empty chairs. She wasn’t very surprised to see someone there, it had only been recently that she made a friend in the same way. It was weird that all of a sudden she was meeting people in this building.

The music stopped and as it did Mia winced when she saw the boy trip and fall into a row of chairs. She turned the mic off and set it on the ground of the stage and hurried off the stage itself and over to the boy. “Are you okay?” She asked when she was able to look down at him. She merely blinked at him, not sure what to do since he made no movement to get up. She didn’t laugh, or smile; instead she looked concerned for the boy. “You’re not hurt are you?” Because if he had twisted or broken something that would have royally sucked.

There was a little water damage way up there on the ceiling, and something stuck to the roof farther off that he could only guess came from a time when this building was first built. It's funny, the small things you notice before something horrible happens to you. Patch physically winced at almost each approaching footstep, she must have hurried over to him. He had made a scene, tripping over himself and into the row of chairs right as she finished her song. She probably thought he broke his neck, since he hadn't gotten up. He cursed himself for that too.

“Are you okay?” Then there she was, the pink haired girl from the stage, now looking down at him with a look of complete focus, concern, and maybe slight confusion. If his cheeks weren't obviously red, they were now. He was thou roughly embarrassed. “You’re not hurt are you?”She asked after a little bit. Yup, she probably did think he broke his neck. Great way to end November, He thought to himself. He tried not to look completely stupid as he struggled to find the words for a response.

"I... am... uhmm.. fine." He managed. Wow, nice response. "Didn't break my ankle.. I think.." He added, stumbling over the last two words. He felt horrible from his position on the ground, so he scrambled up to his feet and stood there in front of the girl. No escape.

Mia Smiled at the boy; glad he was okay. She picked up on his hesitation; wondering if it was because he was just shy. “I’m glad you're okay.” She didn’t think he had broken his neck; maybe his wrist or ankle or something that wasn’t as bad. But she was glad to hear he hadn’t broken anything either. “Ah! That’s great. Well if you can move it, then everything should be fine. Does anything hurt?” She sighed “Just making sure you didn’t twist anything.” What could she say? Her parents were medical doctors; it kind of rubbed off on her.

Mia tilted her head to the side when he just seemed to stand there looking at her. Had she done something wrong? Or was he always this… Well awkward? Either way, Mia could work around it. “I’m Mia!” She stretched out her hand to shake his. She figured it wouldn’t make the situation any better if she called him out on his awkwardness in anyway. “So, What are you doing here?” Mia was sort of hoping it was because he had a thing for music. But with her luck he probably just came in here to escape the cold weather. It was so hard to find people who her passionate about music as much as she was. Not that she would hold that against anyone, she just loved music.

She talked about making sure he didin;t break anything, running through a check list like she was some trained professional. He was just glad he didn;t break anything.. he probably would have died right there from embarrasment if he did. Trying to get out of the gym and break his leg, then probably get dragged to a nurse or someone by this girl. There was a surprising lack of conversation just now.. but then he realized he hadn't said anything else, he just was just standing there and looking at her. Aghh! he groaned inwardly, hating being this awkward.

“I’m Mia!” The pink haired girl finaly said, obviously trying to break down the awkward barrier he had recently built up. She held out her hand for him to shake, and he decided he might as well shake it, he had gone through enough embarrasment and awkwardness for one day.

"Hi Mia.. I'm Patch. Stupid name I know, but what can I say?" Began Patch, coughing towards the end of his sentence when he realized his face was still red. He probably looked like an idiot.

“So, What are you doing here?” She asked, she seemed genuinley curious, but the type of curious that was only looking for a certain type of answer.

"Well, I was enjoying a walk outside, it was pretty nice and I got lost in the weather..." Patch trailed off as he looked around, at least no one else was around. "Then I somehow ended up here, walked inside, and heard you singing. I didn't know you were singing though, I thought someone left music playing or something.. I sort of walked in." He stated, sort of apologizing toward the end. "Do you sing a lot?" He asked quickly, trying to not be awkward.

Mia can easily work around awkwardness, maybe it was mostly because sometimes she found herself making things awkward herself. Either way Mia thought it was pretty cute with how awkward and shy he seemed to be in this particular moment. She took a deep breath, trying to think of something to say to get around it even more. She bit her lip; she was at a sort of loss. Maybe he would like to sing with her?

It was then that he introduced himself. She grinned “Ah! Patch, that’s actually a pretty cool name. I mean it’s unique and all. Mind if I ask if it’s a nickname? My name is pretty lame though, I mean m-i-a, it’s the acronym for ‘missing in action’” Yeah she was trying to make him feel better. She wasn’t sure how she was doing; she knew she was talking a lot but that’s how she was most of the time. “If I ever have children I’m going to give them the awesomest names ever.” Mia noticed that the boy was getting red in the face but didn’t point it out; again that wouldn’t help anything.

Mia smiled but inside she had sighed heavily. Oh well, she didn’t mind the answer he had given. She was still up for making friends with the boy. “ah! I see. I love the cold and the snow.” She had missed it so much when she first moved to Hammel. “Well, don’t worry! I don’t mind an audience.” She winked at him and then shrugged lightly “I was just fooling around anyways.”

Mia grinned at his question “Yeah I guess I do… I mean I’m not in a band or anything like that but just in general I actually sing a lot…” She turned around, looked at the stage, and gave a heavy sigh. She looked back at Patch “Ever been on a stage?”

He was actually kind of surprised that she was trying to get past this awkward barrier of his. She didn't seem weirded out by it, and she hadn't walked away. “Ah! Patch, that’s actually a pretty cool name. I mean it’s unique and all. Mind if I ask if it’s a nickname? My name is pretty lame though, I mean m-i-a, it’s the acronym for ‘missing in action'". Responded the pink haired girl named Mia. He couldn;t help but smile at the way she introduced herself, at least she was nice.

“If I ever have children I’m going to give them the awesomest names ever.” She stated, maybe she was a mind reader.. or maybe it was a coincidence and he was being paranoid.

"Nope.. not a nickname. My parents wanted a dog, but then I came along." He said, half jokingly. In truth, he had no idea why his parents named him that. When he was really young, his Dad always joked that when he came out he was whining like a puppy. Patch shook at the thought of child birth. Yuck. "That's cool, I mean sure, Patch is a name to get teased about, but at least my name isn't Miranda or something like that." He offered at her comment about children and names.

“Ah! I see. I love the cold and the snow.” She then said, Patch actually half smiled at this. Someone else who enjoyed this weather. “Well, don’t worry! I don’t mind an audience. I was just fooling around anyways.” She added, with a tiny wink. Under the circumstances Patch would have blushed again, but she was pretty cool, and he felt the red leaving he cheeks. By the time she finished answering his question about bands and singing, Patch was more calm. “Ever been on a stage?” She asked. It caught him off guard.

"Uhmm, no not really. I mean sure, in elementary school and in sixth grade I was in choir, but that was forced, other then that I really haven't had a reason to be anywhere near a stage." Patch offered, hoping the comment wouldn't hurt her feelings, if she wanted him to go up with her, he wasn't so sure yet.

Mia chuckled “I didn’t have that problem.. My parents already had a few dogs. Well six of them to be honest.” When you live in Alaska where she was from, sled dogs were the best; a lot of work but the best. Though Mia wasn’t a mind reader, far from it actually; though she wished she was sometimes. It would have made her life so much easier in those times. “Have you ever asked them why they named you Patch?” Mia placed on of her knees on the auditorium seats. She was content on standing there talking to Patch; he seemed really nice after all. “Isn’t Miranda a girl’s name? That would totally suck if they called you that..”

“Oh, Okay. I love being on stage… Even if there isn’t an audience.” She looked at the stage and sighed. She would live on stage if she could. She loved singing; she loved music in general , it was her one true passion. “Why were you forced to be in choir?” Mia hoped the boy didn't mind how curious she was; she was naturally curious and couldn't help but ask questions.

“I didn’t have that problem.. My parents already had a few dogs. Well six of them to be honest.” Patch raised an eyebrow to that. He always lived in a big city or suburb, no one there ever had six dogs, and he only had one. “Have you ever asked them why they named you Patch?” She asked right after, putting her knee on a chair in what he thought was an attempt to get comfortable. She was enjoying talking to him, and he smiled inwardly at that. “Isn’t Miranda a girl’s name? That would totally suck if they called you that..”

"Well, I only asked why my name was that when I was little and I always got joking answers... or answers that I probably shouldn't have heard when I was that little." He responded, scanning the area with his brown eyes again, no one else had made their way in. He asked curiously. He was getting comfortable around her and was calming down.

“Oh, Okay. I love being on stage… Even if there isn’t an audience.” She said, and then sighed. Maybe it was disappointment or maybe it was longing and he was interrupting what she really wanted to be doing. “Why were you forced to be in choir?” The pink haired girl asked.

"Oh, just a required class and all. I had stage fright for a while." Answered Patch. He was actually glad he stopped by, thanksgiving break had been a bit lonely around here, he didn't want to go back home, he was waiting until Christmas vacation when they would come up to Vermont to visit him. He was enjoying the conversation. "So, is that natural?" He asked, looking at her hair. "I mean I never heard of a meta having a pink hair power, but you could be the first." He added.

Mia chuckled a little bit “Woah, I see. So you’re not keen on asking them now are you?” Then again, wouldn’t he just get the same answer as before? Mia couldn’t imagine what his parents were like; if they gave a child inappropriate answers to a question that was legit and should have taken more seriously. Mia just hoped Patch hadn’t gotten bullied enough that made mental damage.

“Oh! Okay. I never heard of choir being a required class though… Huh.” She shrugged it off; that’s what she gets for being raised in the middle of nowhere. Thanksgiving had also been slightly lonely for her; but that was just because she was so used to all her family members getting together; from her mother’s side and her father’s side. So the past two years had been very lonely and she was still trying to adjust to it. At least at Christmas she would be able to spend it with her Uncle; because last year’s Christmas had been very depressing for her family. Since it had been the first year without Mia’s father and brothers.

Mia laughed at his question. “I wish! It would save me a ton of money on hair dye.” She scratched the back of her head, strands of her pink hair falling in front of her face though she left them alone. “It’s not natural.. I dye it like every other month. Sometimes it’s longer, sometimes shorter; it really depends on how fast my roots grow in.” Mia smiled “Oh I have this college friend who can manipulate colors! That’s similar right?”

Patch smiled a bit when she responded to what he said about his name, and then raised an eyebrow at the part where she said she never heard of choir being a required class. That was weird, he wondered where she had grown up.

“I wish! It would save me a ton of money on hair dye.” She said after laughing some at his question, at least the two where getting along. “It’s not natural.. I dye it like every other month. Sometimes it’s longer, sometimes shorter; it really depends on how fast my roots grow in. Oh I have this college friend who can manipulate colors! That’s similar right?” This got patch to laugh a bit, he barriers were falling down, and he was happy she stuck around that long.

"I guess it sort of is the same. I do have a room mate who is a telepath. She can talk to you via your head, it is pretty cool. My other room mate is a vocal mimicker. I, am the only hot head in the room. Pyrokinesis." Patch offered, giving out his power with a small smile. He had no idea of how Mia felt towards the people he shared a dorm with, so he kept their names to himself. he really didn't want to loose a friend this fast if she happened to hate Hina or Danicca. The truth about any school, especially a boarding school like Hammel, is that once you go to school here, you are tossed into a mess of friendships, hates, or romances. It can get to be a bit too much if you don't keep on top of it. "Sort of explains why I was outside I guess, I like it when it is cold." He said.

Mia smiled at him, “A telepath huh? And a vocal mimicker. It sounds like your room is full of fun powers.” She looked at the ceiling, trying to remember what her roommates powers were. “My one roommate can turn into a Kitten, and there’s always cats following him around. Hrm… other roommate can see the history of objects I don’t remember what that power was called. The other one is like super duber smart; so like ultimate intelligence is his power or something like that.” She didn’t add names because she wasn’t sure if it would make a difference if this boy didn’t know who they were. “Oh! I can manipulate the weather. I don’t think it has a fancy name like pyrokinesis.” She pouted a bit, she wanted a power with a fancy name.

Mia nodded “Oh is that really? So your power pyrokinesis effects your body temperature?” She never knew that could have been a case for those kinds of powers. Then again he was the first person she has met that had a power that could possibly effect their body temperature. “I was born and raised in Alaska, Barrow, Alaska actually; it’s like really close to the Arctic so it’s always like really cold. It’s known as the city that’s ‘on top of the world’.”

I don’t think it has a fancy name like pyrokinesis.” She responded, Patch kind of puffed out his chest at that, but was also interested in her power.

“Oh is that really? So your power pyrokinesis effects your body temperature? I was born and raised in Alaska, Barrow, Alaska actually; it’s like really close to the Arctic so it’s always like really cold. It’s known as the city that’s ‘on top of the world’.” She stated, giving out some of her past.

"Oh cool. I was born in Texas, and moved to New York. Got a really bad fever there, and here I am now." Patch stated, short a sweet.

Mia smiled “Texas? That’s really cool. You must be used to the heat than.” She couldn’t imagine living in Texas, she was too used to the cold and could barely stand the heat here in Vermont in the summer. But then again if she was born and raised there she would be used to the heat and probably hate the cold. Weird how their bodies worked that way.

Mia grinned at him before looking at the stage. “Did you want to go on the stage?” She was running out of things to talk about in that moment and was hoping walking onto the stage would bring out another conversation.
