The Details
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Blue
Any Piercings? No
Any Tattoos? No
Any Scars? No
General Appearance: Cobalt is 5 foot 7 inches (a little short, yes, but he’ll thank you not to comment on that if you like your teeth) with brown hair and blue eyes. He’s not exactly the prettiest flower in the pot, but he’s far too old to care about that nonsense anymore. He works out regularly so he’s in fairly good shape, even if his knees give him trouble at times (one of his few physical problems that aren’t in direct response to his abilities. He just doesn’t take care of himself). He dresses well, if a little casually (hey, after all these years and with the intern he has, he’s earned it). If he looks a little weathered, he’d tell you that it’s because he is. The years haven’t been very kind to him, and he doesn’t really take care of himself. He exercises regularly, but he doesn’t watch what he eats, and he rarely sleeps. As part of his abilities, he finds it much easier to focus and function during the nighttime, but his job dictates he keep regular office hours during the day. Also because of his abilities, he is very sensitive to the sun, rendering his skin really pale and really easily sunburnt.
Personality: Cobalt is cranky. He’s got the cranky old man attitude down to an art. And he’s always been like this. As a child, he was shy and mistrustful and still has a hard time trusting other people to this day. He’s also ludicrously stubborn. On first meeting, he is abrasive, stern, and irritable, but when you’ve earned his trust (which is no mean feat), he is fiercely loyal, and will fight for you tooth and nail. He has outstanding work ethic (a little too outstanding for his health, but that’s neither here nor there) and has been incredibly driven since he went to Hammel. He has a love/hate relationship with Hammel, as he doesn’t agree with the compulsory attendance for personal reasons (explained in “History”), but he is willing to work for and represent the metahumans attending and working at the school. Cobalt’s most defining characteristic (aside from his crankiness) is his strong sense of justice. Above all, he wants to do what’s right and help other people, even if he’s more than lacking in social graces. He isn’t comfortable in large groups of people and he has only ever been able to make one or two friends in his life. He’s just really not a people person. He’s not religious anymore, but he’s strapped with boatloads of Catholic Guilt from his childhood, which gives him some trouble reconciling with the fact that he’s attracted to men. So, in true Cobalt fashion, he chooses to ignore that part of himself, opting to just wait for it to go away or something (because Cobalt is nothing if not rational…). Also, his sunny intern, who has somehow wormed her way into being something like his partner, perpetually baffles him. He’s still not sure when the name of his firm changed from “Blue Law Firm” to “Blue and Gold Law Firm”. He rarely jokes, but when he does, it’s deadpan, dry humor.
Your Vices
Likes: Murder mystery novels, Chinese food, candy (any kind of candy at all), purple, justice, waffles, jogging in the early morning, winning challenging cases, children (Cobalt loves kids, they’re his secret soft spot), nighttime, rain, and coffee sugared to oblivion.
Dislikes: Soap operas, coconut ice cream, crowds, bullies, snobbery, Journey songs (all of them. Ever.), most television, romance novels, summer, loud people, overly friendly people, Disney, peanut butter, bigotry, hypocrisy, being told what to do, personal conversations (ie, talking about feelings. The mind recoils).
Strengths: Debate, writing, thinking on his feet, spotting other people’s lies, watching other people without being seen, sneaking around in the shadow, being a giant grump.
Weaknesses: Social graces, personal issues, losing (he’s a terrible loser), mathematics, anger management, playing music (he’s probably a little tone deaf, but he’ll never admit it), relationships, showing affection, resisting sugar.
Fears: Failing, losing the people he cares about (read: severe abandonment issues), mild cynophobia (which makes working with Leila and her Corgi interesting)
Secret: Nobody really knows anything about his backstory because he’s such a private person, but he really, really doesn’t want anyone to know he’s homosexual. Since he hasn’t quite addressed that himself.
Family Ties
Father: Unknown
Mother: Unknown
Siblings: Unknown
Any Other Important People:The last person he was truly close to he hasn’t seen since he was thirteen.
History
Cobalt grew up in a Catholic orphanage where he had a relatively content childhood. He was treated well by the administrators and teachers and had a fairly good education. However, like today, he had trouble making friends and tended to keep to himself. As such, he wasn’t really a popular child and nobody really spoke to him unless it was to bully him. Cobalt never got into any fights for his own sake, but he would leap to the defense of others. He met his best, and only, friend when he was twelve and he punched an older boy in the face on his behalf. It was from him that Cobalt got the nickname “Blue”. The two were inseparable until he was thirteen and his powers finally manifested. It was that time that Hammel representatives arrived and told him about the school. Cobalt didn’t want to attend and tried to resist the rule of compulsory attendance. Eventually, however, he was packed away and shipped to Hammel. A few months later, his friend was moved to foster care and he never heard from him again. Although going to Hammel was probably the best thing that ever happened to him in terms of education and opportunities, Cobalt resented the school for not giving him the choice to stay. Cobalt wavered between being a police officer or an attorney when he was young, but ultimately decided to continue schooling and become a civil rights lawyer. He runs a law firm in the town which was previously called “Blue Law Firm” until he decided that it would be a good idea to hire an intern who somehow managed to get the sign changed to “Blue and Gold Law Firm”. One day Cobalt will change it back…
Roleplay Example
The sun was beginning to set, growing dark on the horizon. The departure of the sun helped ease his headache some as he pushed himself up out of his chair, his knees complaining slightly. He casually sauntered over to the opposite desk where Leila was leaning back in her chair, her feet on the desk, reading a “Flash” comic book. Cobalt distastefully sidestepped her Corgi sprawled out on her back near the desk and dropped a thick pile of manilla folders on Leila’s desk. The force of the impact startled the dog and knocked some papers off her desk, fluttering them onto the floor. Leila jumped and glared at him.
“You know, I do enough of that myself. You don’t need to go and knock things off my desk too.” She looked down at the folders, “What are these?”
“Paperwork,” Cobalt replied, turning away and grabbed his backpack. Leila sputtered.
“Paperwork?!” She repeated, incredulity in her tone, “What for?”
“You’re my intern, that’s what you’re here for, isn’t it?” Cobalt slung his backpack over his shoulders.
“Wh- I- Why can’t you do some? It’s not like you have anything to do tonight. I was planning on going out!”
Cobalt gave her A Look. “Because.”
Leila gave him A Look of her own, “‘Because’ isn’t an anwer. It’s a conjunction.”
Cobalt scowled at her. “Have a good night,” He said pointedly. And he left.
