General Appearance: In sharp contrast to her brother, Janice Adams is a small individual. One would even be inclined to say she looks dainty. At first. She is rarely seen without a cocky, wide smile and holds herself like a woman on a mission. She dresses nice for work, but out of the office, she wears comfortable jeans and tank tops, and maybe a large sweater. She chooses flats for work and worn tennis shoes for everyday life. She’s naturally pretty, but doesn’t quite have that concept accepted in her brain. That is to say, she doesn’t think she’s pretty or ugly. She just is. And besides, there’s far more interesting things to worry about anyways. As a result, her brown hair hangs loose and free about her shoulders or scooped up into a hastily-planned ponytail or bun.
Personality: Crass, brash, and unabashed. That’s the best way to describe Janice. Her self-proclaimed philosophy is “yell loud, laugh louder”, and she generally decides to do what she wants. She’s very smart, with the ability to remember things with minimal effort, but often doesn’t have the patience for a lot of theory and no practice. She tends to shoot from the hip, and improvisation is the name of the game for her, whether it be trying to talk to a friend or talk to a jury. She can read people, and can usually make people do what she wants. She comes across as a little abrasive and a little crude. And people often express surprise that she’s a lawyer, since she doesn’t seem the type. She doesn’t put much stock into what other people think of her, but she desperately seeks out her brother’s approval, which can sometimes be a source of frustration when what she wants and what her brother wants of her don’t match up (see: smoking). She isn’t very nurturing, but she works very hard to try to fill that role for her family. She’s much better suited for the role of the protector and the fighter. She’s a physical being; she likes to be in contact with people, preferring to greet her friends with an arm around their shoulders or a friendly punch in the arm. She likes to gesticulate when she’s excited and the more and more passionate she gets about a subject, the louder and more excitable she gets. She often forgets about having an “inside voice”. She is impatient all around, not even having the patience to make her own meals, opting to have her more patient brother make her food. She’s fascinated by the way her older brother can interact with people. She doesn’t understand how to be as nurturing as her brother is naturally.

History
The Adams household was never a happy one, but where one sibling suffered through physical abuse, emotional pain and the vague confusion of something remarkable happening to his body, the other sibling was somehow fortunate enough to avoid the brunt of this storm. When little Riley Adams left for Hammel at the age of twelve, his baby sister Janice was only two years old, and his father Jacob finally decided to stop physically abusing his family. After all, Riley couldn’t bruise, but little Janice and her mother, Heather, could. And that could cause problems. So Jacob never laid a finger on Janice, or her mother, but their family was never happy. Jacob and Heather fought every day, their shouting matches frightening their growing daughter. She spent the majority of her days outside wandering aimlessly about the woods of Waterbury, Vermont until she learned to read, when she turned her focus from wandering to reading. She couldn’t stop her parents from fighting, but she could at least understand why. Driven by the idea that if she read enough, she would understand how to help her parents, her grade school reading were books she could barely understand that had words like “counseling” and “divorce” when she probably should have been reading books with fairies and magic. These books, her parents’ fights and the mysterious gap in her family in the form of her absent brother she didn’t remember left Janice Adams a very serious, suspicious little girl with old eyes. Her mother tried to make things easy for her, but even as a child, Janice understood that between herself and her mother, she was the “tough one”. It was up to her to make sure her mother was safe and her father quiet.
Finally, when Janice was ten, Heather showed a bravery that she didn’t know her mother possessed and divorced her father. Janice insisted she be present for all the legal proceedings. She had to protect her mother, after all. But finally, Janice and Heather were free from Jacob and Janice could ask her mother the forbidden question: will you tell me about my brother? And Heather, not wanting to hide anything from her only daughter, told Janice everything. And suddenly, Janice was painfully aware of what exactly her father was capable of. How, in her eyes, that she’d been at his mercy the entire time. And she resolved that she and her mother would never be in that position again. That she would never feel like she was at anyone’s mercy. But for a long while, Janice didn’t think she liked this mysterious Riley very much. Every time Heather talked about him, or thought about him, she would start to cry. And Janice had taken it upon herself to make sure that her mother never saw need to cry again. She resented him for being free when she, even as an eleven year old, was aware of her assumed responsibilities as the “tough one” in the family. But for about a year and a half, the two lived together in Burlington and Janice took care of things. But the suspicious, sullen preteen didn’t know how to be nurturing. Didn’t know how to play like a little girl or laugh like one. And didn’t know how to make her mother laugh either. She could protect her mother. But she didn’t know how to take care of her.
Then one day, Riley came home. The first thing Janice thought—as she crouched behind her bedroom door, peeking through the crack in the door—was that he was so very tall. And practically a man already. She decided she didn’t trust him. But somehow, once he returned, Heather began to laugh again. And smiled more. Thrilled that both her children were home and finally safe, Heather became a much brighter, happier woman and a far better mother. And for a while, that only made it worse for confused and angry Janice. Why was this strange older boy so much better at keeping her mother happy? What was he doing that she couldn’t? Riley seemed to understand this and one day, he put an arm around her shoulder, looked her right in the eyes, and said, “You don’t have to take care of anything anymore. From now on, I’m going to take care of you. And everything’s going to be better now.” These words gave her the absolution she didn’t know she needed. She had a brother now. She didn’t need to be the only one taking care of things. Riley taught her to laugh again, and how to play. He was her supporter and confidant (and human ladder) throughout her school years and was the first person she told when she got accepted to University of Vermont.
While at University, Janice got into an argument with a not-so-secret metaphobe about meta human rights in her human diversity class for her political science major. Up until that point she had never paid any mind to the discriminations that metahumans faced; she’d always been too focused on her own family troubles to think about the troubles of others. Now, though, the issue had come to a more personal light: Riley, the most important person in the world to her, was metahuman. And the thought that people would treat him poorly because of something he couldn’t control was unacceptable. The upcoming field of metahuman civil rights law caught her interest after this, and once given a goal, Janice wasn’t interested in being diverted. She was a woman on a mission, and she set her sights high. After four years, she graduated summa cum laude from University of Vermont and was accepted into Yale law school.
She took Yale by storm. She went to protests, made speeches, and generally raised some hell on behalf of metahumans. She got into scuffles, and never shied away from the opportunity to tell someone they were wrong. She finally found her voice, and by god she was going to use it. She took up smoking, she learned to not only laugh often, but to also laugh loudly. She used her intimate understanding of how people argue and used it for defense of others. She turned a little crass, a little rude, but finally and irrevocably Janice, and she loved every minute of it. Maintained perfect grades as a matter of pride. Was maybe a little more interested in actually doing something about meta rights than reading old cases and talking theory. She got an internship with a local law firm her second year of law school, which turned into a full time job when she graduated. She enjoyed living free in Connecticut for a long time, and it seemed like Riley was starting his life as well. He’d married Michael, someone who Janice actually approved of and was living happily with him. Everything was going right. Until it wasn’t. When Michael died, Janice immediately resigned her position at the law firm, reached out to a new one, and moved to Pilot Ridge to be near her brother. Once more, she didn’t have to protect her brother, but to take care of him, and seeing as how, in her eyes, Riley saved her, she would do her best to return the favor.
She was surprised to find that she genuinely enjoyed Pilot Ridge. It was sometimes a little too quiet for her, but it was a good placeholder until she could think of something better to do. And it was close to her brother, which was the most important thing. She spends her days secretly smoking, keeping an eye on her brother and his group of endearingly stupid friends, and building her resume. Janice Adams is going to save the world someday. Pilot Ridge seems like a good place to start.
