At will Kieron can manifest a pair of bat-like wings that sprout from his shoulder blades which allow him the ability to fly. He has full control over these manifests and has very good flight skill, but it can be somewhat erratic if he is highly emotional or stressed. The manifests can also sometimes be trigged involuntarily if he is startled. The main side effect of the manifests is that his body burns through protein at a wicked pace, meaning he has to keep a very high-protein diet in order to replace what his body is depleting. If he does not manifest and stretch the wings every few days he gets incredibly stiff and sore shoulders.
Kieron has very advanced night vision and can see perfectly clearly in complete darkness. As a result of this, however, he is very photosensitive and is very uncomfortable and struggles to see well in bright light.

Any Scars? There is a 2inch scar on his scalp, the result of being goaded to try to fly under a low bridge while he was drunk. This isn't visible without ruffling through his hair to find it. There are two patches of slightly distorted and warped skin on his shoulders where his wings manifest.

General Appearance: K is a Caucasian male of Irish heritage, with naturally curly brown hair and bright hazel eyes. He stands quite tall at 6ft 1 and is fairly slender but well toned, particularly his upper body which he has to keep in good shape because flight is physically hard work. His chin often sports a small amount of stubble but he keeps it well trimmed and he generally has a neat and tidy look about him, even if his hair is sometimes a touch windswept.

The one aspect of Kieron's attire that rarely changes is his wearing of sunglasses. His photosensitivity makes bright lights very uncomfortable for him and so he is most often seen sporting a pair of dark shades, even indoors or while working. At work he keeps to standard nurse scrubs for his clothing. Whilst outside work Kieron tends to wear polo shirts, trousers and dark sneakers; neat and tidy all the way. However, most of his shirts have two Kieron-made slits in the back so that his wings can manifest without destroying the shirt. As such he often wears a light jacket so no one can see the slits or the marred skin on his shoulders.

When his wings manifest they are a dark brown colour similar to his hair tone and have a leathery membrane between the 'fingers' of the wing. The arm of the wing is covered in a soft hair-like fur and he has a 22ft wing span. Unlike a bat the lower section of his wings do not attach to his legs but instead to a point mid-way down his spine. This gives them an almost draconic-type shape.

Personality: Quiet and contemplative, Kieron is outwardly friendly and sociable but has never been the party-hard sort. He has excellent manners and social graces and possesses a deep chivalrous streak, as his grandfather once described him: “he is a knight of old trapped inside a modern man's body”. It is a very apt description of the mid-twenties nurse and is something he takes great pride in. Many who have met Kieron have described him as one who was born in the wrong century and he can completely understand why they might say that. He holds strongly to the values of honesty, chivalry and respect, making him a very valuable worker and a true and loyal friend.

Despite his often failed efforts Kieron has a very strong love of the romantic and has a deep unfettered belief in the whole whirlwind of roses and candlelit dinners and poetry by the fireplace. He has tried the sexy suave picking-up-a-girl-in-a-pub thing (God knows he's tried), he just isn't very good at it. He has absolutely no interest in casual flings or one night stands and wants nothing more than to settle down and have a family. It's just a shame that his parents present such a huge hurdle.

The one major black mark on Kieron's personality is his relationship with his parents. Controlling and demanding, they have long placed massive pressures upon Kieron's young shoulders and fairly recent events have caused a deep bitterness between them, even if his parents don't quite realise it yet. They are the one subject he will not openly discuss and he is doing all he can to try to break out of the pockets they have him so firmly wedged in.

Kieron adores his wings and there are few things he enjoys more than flying, but he is often frustrated by the inability to do so thanks to city living and closed minds. He is a liberal idealist to the extreme that he outwardly detests politics and politicians, believing that needing a central government telling everyone what they can and cannot do is a symptom of a world that is desperately broken. He simply doesn't understand why people can't just be nice to one another. Kieron's pride and joy is Vetinari, his zebra moray eel, and he takes great delight in his aquatics collection.

History

Matthew and Ciara met while they were both students at university in Belfast, studying very different subjects but falling for each other almost immediately. Their romance was however strongly moderated, both being determined to put their careers before starting a family. It wasn't until their mid-30's that they decided they were finally ready to have a child, and Kieron popped into their lives a few years later.

A good but not particularly bright child, Kieron was always infatuated by fairy tales and stories and spent far more time playing make-believe than he did doing school work or helping around the house, much to his parents dismay. Matthew and Ciara were pushy and determined that their son would do well and become a surgeon like his mother. Studying did not come easily to him and as he got older he found himself spending more and more time in detention at school or being tutored at home, as his parents tried desperately to get the information to stick in his brain. This was not helped when a perfect job offer came up for Ciara in New Hampshire, causing the entire family to move to America when Kieron was ten years old.

In school in America Kieron still struggled with his school work, but over time he gradually begun to adjust and find ways of retaining the information that was spouted at him. It was still not easy, but he found ways to work around his difficulties and when he was thirteen he finally passed a school test first time without having to do a re-sit. As a surprise present for doing well his parents decided to take him for a trip to the Seacoast Science Center, as he had always had a deep love of what dwells in the oceans.

All was going great in the science centre. Kieron had held a starfish, marvelled at the seahorses and had his photo taken stood under the humpback whale skeleton. In the afternoon they were browsing around the gift shop and Kieron had wandered into the art gallery. He was looking at paintings by a local artist when Niall launched himself out from behind a pillar suddenly. There was a deafening scream as giant wings launched out of Kieron's shoulders, the teenager collapsing to the floor in agony as the wings jutted out and destroyed several pieces of art work in the gallery. Kieron was taken to hospital and given pain relief, and several hours later the recruiter from Hammel arrived.

Kieron's recruitment was a fairly easy one despite the teenagers resentment at having to leave his school friends behind. His father had attended Kocher Haute Ecole in his youth so he was able to talk Kieron through it, and the hardest part for the family was the distance between them, even though it was close enough that K could often travel back home during the school breaks. At Hammel Kieron's manners and respect made him a very easy student to get along with but he was still a difficulty to actually teach. It wasn't for the want of trying – K always tried his absolute heart out - he just struggled to keep up with the other students and had to work twice as hard as them to get the same achievements. He was however an absolute breeze to train and took to flying easily, practising as often as time and space allowed. He graduated with just good enough grades to get into college. Knowing he would never, ever possess the ability to become a surgeon like his parents wanted, he instead enrolled on a Bachelor of Science nursing course.

The next four years were fairly miserable for Kieron. He studied incredibly hard and was doing just well enough to get by in a subject he didn't completely care for. His consolation came from the fact that, for every assignment he did well on or exam that he passed, he was handsomely rewarded by his parents. He hated that this was effectively pushing him further and further into their pockets but he could see little other choice in the matter and so continued to do what he could to please them.

During his time at college he met a girl named Maria whom he quickly fell in love with. She was a high school drop-out and full-time worker at a bar in town, and the two quickly got into a serious relationship. They had been dating for six months before Kieron finally plucked up the courage to take her home to meet his parents. It was an absolute disaster, with Ciara and Matthew verbally picking Maria apart and driving an immovable wedge between the pair. The relationship was effectively destroyed and K developed a deep bitterness towards his parents. There was, however, not a great deal he could do. His parents paid his rent and his school fees, he was still paying them back in bits and pieces for the thousands of dollars of damage he caused in the Seacoast center when he was a teenager, and so he was essentially trapped. He did eventually manage to graduate with his bachelor's degree, but he knew he wouldn't be staying in New Hampshire.

After applying for jobs everywhere without much success, he came across a posting stating that the high school in Vermont that he had attended was looking to recruit a new nurse. After a few phone calls and an interview, K got offered the job and he packed up and headed back to Vermont. He allowed his parents to put down the deposit on a house (and pay for the transport of his fish), but promised himself that would be the end of it. He is earning real money now. He is living his own life now. And though it might not have been the life he ideally wanted, he will live it his own way from now on.

Once he has finished paying his parents back, of course.
