The Basics
Name: Lahja Maria Morgan.
Nicknames: None. la-Hyah is not that difficult or long to say, thank you very much.
Age: 46, born 3rd June 1967.
Orientation: Bisexual.
Desired Rank/Job: Local, owner of Montadale Carriages.
Powers: She refers to it as Phase Stepping.
Lahja has the ability to instantly move herself from one place to another. She can be at point A and disappear, instantly reappearing at point B. This ability is limited in that she can only move to a destination that she can actually see; it is line-of-sight travel only. She could use it to pass through a chain-link fence but not a brick wall. If she cannot see where she is going (due to darkness, a blindfold etc) then she cannot Step. She also cannot move more than roughly 75ft in a single Step. Lahja’s Steps cause her severe headaches if she does them too often, and if she Steps more than ten or so times within a few hours she becomes very nauseous, dizzy and disorientated, losing control of where she actually reappears. The Steps can be triggered involuntarily by a fright and in such cases she has no control of where she Steps to.
Play By: Famke Janssen.
The Details
Hair Color: Dark brown, undyed. Something she takes great pride in.
Eye Color: Brown.
Any Piercings? Both earlobes and her right nipple.
Any Tattoos? None.
Any Scars? An ugly 5-inch long surgery scar on her right calf and a few small faded work-related ones of no real note.
General Appearance:
Lahja has always been one to care a great deal about her appearance, and it shows. Her 5ft 7inch frame is slender and subtly curvaceous and her deep brown hair tumbles loose down her back when it isn’t worn elegantly styled. Bright eyes are often paired with a soft smile from full lips, and even when working on the stable yard her make up is employed to best show off her clear skin and feminine features.
It is very rare to see Lahja in anything but impeccable turnout; around the stable yard her dark breeches and blouses are practical but neat and when she is around town Lahja always looks her best. Most of her outfits consist of trousers or long skirts or dresses, but when she does wear a short skirt or shorts they are always paired with tights or high boots, keeping her lower legs covered. Many of her outfits are ones she has either made herself or are modified from pre-made pieces. She firmly believes that the first impression is vital, especially since her business is centred around appearances and showing off, and the impression she always aims to give is of an elegant well-off professional. Many who know her through her business would be surprised to discover that when she’s in the house on her own she is very content in an old bath robe and fluffy slippers.
Personality:
Flirty, adventurous and with a burning love for life, Lahja makes the absolute most of every moment and of every benefit she has received in her rather blessed life. Lahja knows she has had it relatively easy all her life and she does make the most of it, but her deep passion for helping those less fortunate than her is something she holds close to her heart. To those in her employ Lahja is a firm but fair boss. She sets standards high but rewards quickly when they are achieved and her bright smile and personable nature make her very easy to work with most of the time. She has the patience of a saint and will quite happily spend as long as it takes instructing someone, but that patience flies out of the window if any disrespect is shown to her, her horses or her staff. Intelligent and manipulative, Lahja will go out of her way to make life exceedingly difficult for those who have gone against her, and when her anger flares it is a frightening thing to behold.
Lahja's main passions are for her horses and business and she takes both incredibly seriously. Her horses are kept in the lap of luxury and her business is run with extreme care and love. Alongside the carriage horses Lahja has a small herd of rare-breed dressage horses that she competes when she has the time, though this is less often than she would like. Each year she also produces two or three foals for sale. Kaaos, her Finnish Universal Horse stallion, is her absolute pride and joy.
Lahja is used to getting what she wants and her determination to achieve her goals often pushes headlong into stubbornness – once she has her eye on a target nothing can stop her. There is not a shy bone in her body and Lahja has absolutely no problem with stating her wishes and intentions clearly, because what's the point in beating around the bush? She is a hedonist with questionable morals and a burning passion for love, romance and dancing the horizontal tango. Good luck to anyone who tries to keep up with her.

Your Vices
Likes:
Horses, obviously, but she likes most animals in general.
Being out and around the farm, especially on warm days.
Fine dining and good coffee. If she can get both at the same time so much the better.
Dancing in general but certain styles in particular.
Sewing. Quite a large portion of her wardrobe is either made or modified by her.
Her appearance. She’s sexy and she knows it.
Sex. Whilst she does prefer actual relationships she is not above the occasional mutually-beneficial fling.
Writing her column.
Classic cars.
Dislikes:
Her son living so very far away
People with the means who don’t look after themselves or others.
People who wont give children a chance to prove themselves.
People with no manners.
Owners who care more about money than the welfare of the animals they claim to love.
Women who let a man control their lives; the fact Bella Swan is an idol for so many young woman deeply offends and upsets her.
Cooking. She’s never really had much time to learn and she doesn’t enjoy it when she tries. The local restaurants love her for this.
Impatient people.
PETA - they give animal welfare activists a bad name.
Strengths:
Seemingly endless patience with horses and children.
Very physically fit and active.
Enjoys her job and is good at it.
Very independent and strong willed - once she has her mind set on a target nothing can deter her until she has it.
Good at working with difficult personalities.
Good at manipulating people.
Is a pretty decent shot with a rifle, necessary for pest control on the farm.
Fluent in Finnish and a very talented sewer.
Weaknesses:
A little vain, which sometimes comes across as arrogant.
Can’t let go of a grudge.
Once she’s angry she finds it very difficult to calm down again.
Allergic to mustard.
Her independent nature can often lead to stubbornness; she is used to getting her own way and gets irritable if anyone tries to tell her what to do.
Her rather questionable hedonistic nature sometimes put her in precarious situations.
Sob stories - her ex-husband tried to ban her from going to any more rescue centres because she always came home with another animal. Her response was to bring home Maestro.
Fears: Losing contact with her son, losing her farm, her past coming back to bite her.
Secret: When she was at university and working in the club, one night she was walking home down a back street and a man tried to jump her. Between his state of half-undress and the way that he grabbed her it was clear there was one thing on his mind, and in her panic Lahja Phase-Stepped behind him and wrapped the strap of her purse around his throat like a garrotte. She only let him go when she thought she heard voices nearby and she quickly Stepped well away from the man who had slipped into unconsciousness. The viciousness of the anger that she felt and her uncertainty about whether she would in fact have let him go if she hadn't heard the voices still worries her to this day.

History
Gregory Morgan had been born into a Ohio sheep farming family, and whilst the family business had never allowed them vast wealth they had been comfortable and never had any money worries. The youngest Morgan had travelled around the states a lot as part of his business but he developed a strong love of travel abroad and, when he was in his thirties, he took a huge wedge of his savings and went on a two month tour around Europe. That had been the plan, anyway. He travelled from England through France, Germany, Poland and Russia... and then got stuck in Finland. The cause of the failure of the rest of his trip was a young Finnish dressmaker named Lilja.
After a casual meeting in a bar a one-night fling turned into a three week romance, and when it eventually came time for Gregory to travel back to the States he promised Lilja he would keep in touch. Neither of them had expected anything to come of it, but with frequent letters and phone calls the two became closer and closer and two years later Lilja moved to America to live with Gregory. Three years later Lahja was born.
A playful and inquisitive child, Lahja wanted for nothing and loved her life on the farm with her parents and their herd of Montadale sheep. She had always been kind and good-spirited, learning sewing from her mother and helping out around the farm as much as her young legs would let her. When she was ten years old her parents bought her a pony for her birthday, a steady and reliable ex-ranch mare named Doll, and the two became inseparable. That was the beginning of Lahja's lifelong love of everything equestrian.
In the spring of 1981, when Lahja was fourteen years old, she was riding Doll around the fields when she spotted one of the ewes having a difficult lambing. Knowing how to handle a breach birth, Lahja dismounted her horse and ran towards the ewe... and was stunned to find herself immediately by its side. This massively spooked ewe, horse and human, and one week later Lahja arrived at the Hammel Institute.
Lahja's recruitment was a fairly straight-forward one and the young teenager quickly took to life in the boarding school, helped massively by the fact that Doll was boarded nearby. She proved to be a fast learner and had a reasonably high grade average, despite the 'dumb farm girl' stereotype some tagged her with, and she enjoyed her time there immensely. One noticeable incident occurred when Lahja was seventeen and trying to show off to a girl she was trying to impress. The headstrong teen Stepped too many times in succession and began to get very disorientated, accidentally manifesting halfway down the stairs they had been prancing down. Losing her footing Lahja slipped and fell, badly breaking her right fibula. By the end of the third week of the recovery Lahja was getting impatient and irritable, and after several calls with her parents the decision was made to retire Doll and use some of her savings to buy a new horse – one trained to pull a carriage. Within two months of purchasing and learning how to drive Oskar, a Gypsy Vanner gelding, Lahja was hooked.
Upon graduating from Hammel Lahja got accepted into UVM studying business administration, with hopes of some day running her own equestrian centre. Lahja loved the course and the people but she desperately wanted independence away from her parents and so she got a part-time job in a local restaurant. Her tenure on the cold appetisers line was very brief due to her complete impatience and inability, and since they had no need for front of house staff Lahja found herself once more unemployed. Desperate, she took a job at a questionable backstreet club as a private dancer. Surprising even herself, she found that she absolutely loved it. She quickly learned how to manipulate the men (and sometimes women) that she danced for which improved her income dramatically, and between that and custom clothing she made for her university friends the money was just about enough to keep her afloat. It was while dancing in this club that she met a man named Joshua Knapp. He tried to 'save' her from the sinful club in which she worked, but his plan was shot to ribbons when he discovered that she wasn't just another victim of the cracks in the system. She was not only attending university and had plans in motion for her own business, but damnit, she enjoyed dancing. A rather mismatched but passionate relationship was set in motion.
Whilst Lahja was at university the Mad Cow Disease panic set in to the states, and thanks to certain governors panicking that the disease could be spread by sheep the Ohio-based Morgan family farm began to lose money due to a drop in demand for lambs. Whilst her parents farm was still doing enough to keep it in business the pressure began to get too much for the elderly Morgan's. They decided to sell up and move to a smaller, easier to manage property in Vermont where they could keep their beloved sheep more as a hobby than a business and rest out their remaining years in the stunning mountains.
When Lahja graduated from UVM she married Joshua (yes, she proposed to him) and they moved on to her parents new farm in Vermont and began to run it for them, and once Gregory and Lilja passed away it was passed on to her in their will. Lahja slowly sold off a large portion of the sheep herd and invested the money in converting the barns into stables, and eventually Montadale Carriages was born. Three years later, after hiring some staff to help manage the business so she had more time, Jeffrey Knapp came into the world.
For several years the family was relatively peaceful, but a very unpleasant air began to grow between Joshua and Lahja. Although he never admitted it, Lahja believed that he held her to blame for him failing to find his own career as a screenwriter. He would have been mostly right of course; it had been her stubbornness that had led to him working on the farm in the first place. It therefore came as absolutely no surprise to Lahja when one day Joshua admitted that he had been secretly working on and sending out screenplays for almost three years, and one of them had been picked up. The divorce was brief and clean, both of them realising that this clearly wasn't to be, and Joshua moved to LA, leaving Lahja to raise Jeffrey alone.
Lahja had never been one to relish in being alone and despite the fact she had Jeff she quickly began to spiral into loneliness. Her staff were supportive but she had difficulty in socialising with them on a personal level through fear it would ruin her business relationship with them. After many months she made the decision to get back in touch with the school where she had attended after her manifestation. Hammel students began to be accepted onto work experience placements at Montadale Carriages, with some gaining part time jobs there if they did well, and slowly but surely Lahja's love of life began to return. When Jeff's meta ability manifested he was already a familiar face at the school and it served to strengthen Lahja's determination to do what she could to help some of these kids achieve good things in life.
Montadale Carriages bloomed, the 51-acre estate being well managed and continually turning over decent profits. The vast bulk of the income came from the carriage business itself, with Lahja running horse-drawn carriage rides for weddings, proms, birthday parties and all manner of other events. Extra income came from the livery barn that was completed in 2011, allowing people to board their own horses on the the farm, as well as from the sale of lambs and the occasional horse. In the spring Lahja even allowed certain locals to tap the sugar maple trees. In early 2013 Lahja sent off a few sample columns and managed to get a monthly slot writing for Elite Equestrian Magazine. In the very, very rare moments when she wasn't working Lahja could be found sewing, either for herself or for sale.
For several years all went well, but this year when Jeff graduated from Hammel he was eighteen and had a choice to make. To stay in Vermont with his mother, or to go to LA and be with his father. It hadn't taken much thought. Lahja is still distraught about being left alone, and no matter how she tries to rationalise it she is still hurt over his decision. However, she puts a brave face on and is still the same flirty, confident and bold person she has always been. All of her energy and focus is on her horses and her business, and she'll be damned before she lets anything stop her making the most of the rest of her life from here on out.
