It had taken so long just to come up with the wording. No, that was not an accurate assessment of the situation. This always took a long time: context, wording, the point of the message - none of it seemed right. The question itself was simple enough and yet Alyssa could not feel satisfied with the messages. She had already left a voicemail for Noah about holiday break before her classes, now there was one more to leave.
Something so simple, so crucial to everyday life should be a piece of cake, but any matter involving phones tightened her chest. Alyssa hated her voice and how she sounds on the phone. She worried over if the other person on the line could even understand her. The pangs of anxiety and the flutters of worry in her stomach would be so intense at times, the girl would have no choice other than to hang up and put it off. If it was family, the uncomfortable sensations dissipated for the most part. Anyone else? She would have to prep herself before giving it a try.
The nervous girl took a deep breath and sighed once more, trying to calm the fluttering in her stomach. This was her trainer, her favorite person! There was no reason to feel such worry with the person she had good rapport with. Well, no sane reason anyways. The automated female voice instructed numbers and message options. She pressed the number to re-record; one last try.
"Hi Vel, I forgot to ask earlier today. I was wondering if you were going home for the holiday break. Let me know, okay?"
ENOUGH. No more overthinking it, the blonde mentally scolds herself as she finally leaves the voicemail and stuffs her phone in her backpack. A part of her desperately wanted to dig it out and call, just say to forget the previous message. Why bother her trainer with such a mundane question, something she could have asked earlier today?
Mornings had always been the better part of her day. Waking up when the sky is still dark blue in time to see the sunrise was a routine she honestly looked forward to. Other than that, the rest of the day tends to waver between high and low points. In fact, it had been later that afternoon Alyssa received the bad news via a voicemail from her mother.
“Again.” Alyssa exhaled as she listened to the message, trying to shake off the sinking of her hope. A cold gust of mind ruffled her pink scarf, mirroring exactly what she could not say aloud. Honestly, it wasn't unexpected by now, but she had dared for a moment to look forward to spending some time with her family for the holidays.
Once again, that was just not going to happen and the reason why was clear and understandable, yet...the girl shut her eyes to force back the sting of tears, mentally scolding herself for daring to feel angry about it.
Just delete it. The longer it’s there…
And just like that, disaster strikes.
“Augh nonono!”
The blonde girl squeaks in absolute desperation, a tad too late in realizing that in her grief and bleary squints through strong cold wind gusts that she had deleted the new messages along with the old ones. And they had been the most important ones to her!
“Stupid-stupid-stupid me!” She muttered to herself. Fantastic news from home and she now had to find the courage to bother them for their plans again due to her own stupidity. This day was certainly going her way! Alyssa instinctively reached up to grab a hold of her favorite pink scarf…which was no longer around her neck. Her eyes widened and frantically glanced around.
“Nonono where did it - ?!”
