He wanted a dog.
He really wanted a dog.
James parked his car outside of the Strickland Sanctuary, turning the keys in the ignition to quiet the motor. Living alone wasn't all that it was cracked up to be, really; not having to share his space was nice, and he did welcome quite a bit of the ensuing silence, but sometimes a bit of company was nice -- and while he wasn't about to start putting out ads asking for roommates, he figured a pet seemed like a nice compromise. The only issue was that he was a full-time student who worked after classes and was rarely home, and whatever poor dog he dragged home would have had even less company there than they did at any shelter.
Instead, he had decided to head to the Sanctuary after class let out to see about volunteering, dog-walking -- whatever he could do to have a bit of time with some furry companions. And thankfully, the staff seemed pleasant enough when he asked, and shortly after arriving, he found himself standing among the kennels with a leash and hands smelling of hand sanitizer that left an annoying, lingering slickness on his hands.
Continuing to rub off the strong smell of alcohol, the teenager knelt down in front of a kennel with a rather large, black dog. "You want to go on a walk, big guy?"
