Left Behind (on date night) {Kailin}

Lany enjoyed cooking and baking. She would often help her mother with it – and she needed it, too. Lany knew how stressed it got their mother, having to cook every single day for such a large family as this…and she was learning swiftly. Lany had her own arsenal of memorized recipes to produce in bulk and for cheap. Today they were making taco salad. Mrs. Bishop was away that evening for a date with Mr. Bishop and she’d left Lany in charge of the kitchen.

It looked like Kailin wanted to help too, and Lany wasn’t about to stop her. Besides, the two of them got along famously (unlike her relationship with Katy). Kailin didn’t seem to mind her quiet personality and didn’t push her to fill in pauses during conversation. Often Lany would borrow things from her and give them back intact and unharmed.

“Don’t worry,” she was telling her. “There’s no rush. We’ll start way ahead of time.”

Lany chopped up some green peppers. She had more vegetables waiting by the side: red peppers, onions, some garlic…

“We’re going to have to use a lot of ground beef. John and Jacob eat like little monsters,” she joked, flashing Kailin a smile.

It wasn't uncommon to see any of the Bishop children helping prepare dinner. It was a team effort, honestly. 14 mouths was a lot to feed, and it became a bonding experience for some of the children. But Lany had been the first one to stand up and offer. Kailin volunteered shortly there after, standing by her brunette siblings side.

So that was how they had gotten in the kitchen today, making a whole lot of Taco Salad. Lany was chopping up the vegetables, and she was taking out a now-thawed package of ground beef. Kailin smiled at the small joke her sister made.

"That's because they are little monsters." Kailin mused, making sure the stove was on. Her hand hovered over the pan at a safe distance, and she nodded to herself. Definitely hot.

Kales pulled the spices out from the cabinet, before speaking up again. "I mean, they eat like crazy, they bite sometimes, and they are devious but still lovable. Total monster material."

“They’re smelly too.” Lany wrinkled her nose, then sighed. “I hate laundry day.”

Like cooking, laundry was also a team effort…though usually only one Bishop was assigned to it on any given day. Sure, it was a lot, but it didn’t take much to stuff it all into a washer, and then into a dryer. She’d usually deliver a bundle each to the siblings’ rooms; they’d have to fold up their clothes themselves. Though often times things tended to get mixed up.

Yes, Lany much preferred cooking. And, despite the work, she was beginning to blossom into a decent homemaker. She took pride in her clean room and a completed meal.

“Do you want to turn on the stove?” she asked, noting Kailin taking out the meat. She went quiet then; for a little, the only sounds she made was that of the knife over the cutting board, a few scrapes here and there. Then she thought to fill in some of the silence. What was it that people often gossiped about? Lany cleared her throat.

“So…” she began. “Do you…like somebody?”

"How could I forget?" The blonde sister sighed dramatically as her feet pushed her towards the stove. She turned the dial to the appropriate heat, and turned back to her sister, a smile on her face. The question that the brunette asked her was something that could be easily answered with no amount of blushing required; however, if the question was turned back to Lany, would it be the same?

"Not really, no. But what about you? Do you have anyone that you fancy?"

Kailin wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, but wouldn't pry anymore if the girl couldn't give her a straight answer. That was the thing about their relationship; Kailin and Lany had their understandings about boundary pressing, and how they would never push too hard.

Lany thought; there was Flynn, whom she’d gone to the dance with, though that had gone nowhere. Other than that, Lany didn’t have many male friends.

“Well, I can’t say that I do,” she responded, scraping the bits of chopped up pepper into the pan. She said it with some tentativeness; though the statement seemed final, it ended with a slight questioning tone.

Lany always considered herself too shy and quiet to have put herself out there, so she wasn’t off-put that she had no one to fawn over. Kailin always seemed so much more gregarious, though; she thought it wouldn’t be hard at all for her sister to find a date.

“I’m sure there’s a guy out there just waiting to ask you out,” she told her, grinning.
