The BasicsName: Raylaigh Lee Hawthorne
(Pronunciation: “Ray-layh”)
Nicknames: Ray, Hermes
Age: 16
Orientation: homosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers: Flight – Winged Feet: Raylaigh has small white wings that grow out of his ankles (origin for Hermes nickname). He runs and glides through the air more than ‘flies’ he can also use them to hover and run at quicker speeds, though it usually ends up being a near surface glide. He has hollow bones and fragile joints. He suffers from joint pain and has broken several bones and sometimes several times. He can fly long distances and he can use his feet-wings as propellers to push himself vertically and horizontally without the running motion but that is usually dangerous as he hadn’t really gotten the whole steering thing under control yet.

Any Piercings? one earlobe
Any Tattoos? No, his mom won’t let him
Any Scars? Raylaigh is very clumsy, so several.
General Appearance: Raylaigh has, very recently, gone through his growth spurt. He went home for summer shorter than most of his peers and came back to Hammel much taller than a lot of his yearmates. As a result Ray is very uncoordinated and is still learning what it is like to be tall. He frequently smacks his head on things and trips over his own feet. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem but Raylaigh’s power causes his bones to be hollow and fragile, as a result these klutzy shenanigans have broken many bones. The growth spurt also thinned Ray out a great deal and he is always hungry! It is very rare to see Ray not eating something. Though he is still rather slender he weighs still less.
He is always smiling and his eyes bright, unless he is confused in which case it will appear as if no one is home upstairs. It is hard for him to express genuine anger or sadness because he’s decided he should be happy around everyone. He fixes his brown hair in a swept way. He occasionally will cut it shorter and brush it up but sometimes he just lets it go and it’s usually more or less put together. He is really proud of his earring as it was his first act of rebellion, though his mom was not happy in the least about it. Raylaigh is very concerned about his appearance and unless he is being lazy he will dress purposefully and make sure he is clean shaved. Raylaigh will usually dress in a tee shirt and jeans or some sort of button up. He loves it when he has an excuse to dress sharply.
The part of Raylaigh that most people tend to notice are the miniature pair of wings that grow out of his ankles. He isn’t sure how wings on his feet help him physically, fly but he is definitely a better flier if he ‘runs’ instead of ‘flies’ through the air. They are, when fully extended, just a few inches shy of a foot from tip to ankle. They fold up rather nicely against his ankle but if he’s not careful the tips will drag on the ground. In flight they flutter quickly and function more as rudders than actual lift. When he is doing sports he wears a compression that forces the little wings to rest vertically against his caves and then covers them so they’re out of the way and protected. Raylaigh can completely pull in his wings, but that tends to make his legs tense and it hurts a lot when they come back out, so he tends to avoid that. They hurt when they first appeared but now Ray only notices if there is a broken feather, or blood feather, or if someone steps on them, which is painful. Don’t pull his feathers, that hurts very much.
Personality: Raylaigh is a quirky child. He is very optimistic and believes strongly in the goodness of people and that there is a possibly future where everyone can live in harmony. He laughs frequently and it is a rare moment to see Ray without a smile on his face. He is outgoing and loves talking to people. He’s not without ability to stand up for himself. With two older brothers he is quite adept at knowing how to stand up for himself. He can’t keep a secret, chances are if he knows something, eventually someone else will as well. Ray has a problem with his tongue getting away with him and especially when he’s tired he will just talk about anything and everything even things he was sure he wasn’t supposed to say.
Raylaigh is a kind soul and anything he does to bother people he does unintentionally. He is also very bad at gauging people and often times doesn’t realize if he’s annoying people. Raylaigh doesn’t like people to be sad or upset, he is a happy-go-lucky guy that is as spontaneous as the wind. He doesn’t know how to cope with sadness and anger and so he’ll just cover it up until he has more or less forgotten about it. Ray is jokingly confident and hides a low self esteem, partially because he also holds himself to very high standards. It bothers Ray that he’s not too studious, but he tries his best at everything he does. No matter how hard he works he never feels like it’s enough. He loves to try new and different things.
He has a tendency to be a little whimsy and lives with his head in the clouds. Raylaigh is not the kind of man to brood, he’s very carefree and lets things roll off his shoulders more or less. He daydreams frequently and he has a tendency to doodle. If things are going poorly for him he’s more likely to escape into one of the worlds he makes up than anything else. He is good at hiding when he’s upset and doesn’t like to tell people if they’re upsetting him because he doesn’t want to upset them. Instead he usually does something that will uplift his mood and he’ll forget about what upset him in the first place. Ray loves dancing and other sports, he had to stop contact sports for the most part because he is breakable. He really just wants to party and have a good time.Your VicesLikes: Sunshine, warm weather, just being outside in general, computers, techno, dancing, talking, flying, running, swimming, food, drawing, anything and everything Tim Burton.

Lacy is an author and Andrew is a businessman. They created quite a mix of whimsical and practicality in their children. After much argument they decided they would alternate names, first and third got mom’s pick of first name and middle name was dad’s, second and fourth opposite. Which is how Vanel and Ralaigh ended up being named after prominent characters in their mother’s books and Kyle and Andrea got theirs as middle names. Well, things tended to separate fairly well from there. Ray and Van tended to take sides against Kyle and Andrea, though the siblings were not above turning on each other and swapping alliances and occasionally teamed up against one or all against their parents. Raylaigh’s mother was a meta human and Andrew was not. Andrew did not know she was meta human until Kyle started to show signs and inevitably Hammel came to the door. Feeling deceived and frightened, when Raylaigh was nine, his father left and his parents went through a rough divorce. Ray and his siblings were shifted from house to house on opposite weeks, it was an exhausting experience but slowly their father wanted less and less to do with them, especially Kyle and eventually Raylaigh when he became a meta human. Their visits digressed into canceled plans and cards on birthdays until finally, they only ever heard from him on holidays.
Raylaigh was twelve and everything was starting to change. Van was there to stick up for him but he was also leaving for college soon and then it would just be Raylaigh and Andrea. Ray was at his mother’s and he started to feel strange. He didn’t understand it, he’d just been playing video games and, unlike usual, there was no plague traveling around school. Strange soon turned to pain. When Raylaigh started to shiver he was laid down with a blanket, when he started whimpering his mother felt his forehead. With a fever the pain started to race all over his body. When he started moaning and crying his mother decided it was time to go. Van carried Raylaigh to the car when it became apparent movement was agony. Andrea was dragged along as she was too young to be left alone and Kyle was away at Hammel.
The doctors were initially perplexed and did their best by pumping pain medication into him. Raylaigh was so sedated that he woke the next morning free of pain and with wings on his feet. That, of course, warranted some freaking out. The doctors almost seemed relieved that that was all that had happened. Van was shocked and Andrea flat out said that it was gross. And they were. They were bloody and matted from something Ray didn’t care to think about. They didn’t hurt, in fact nothing hurt anymore. There were cuts on his ankles where they had sprang out of his legs, which they stitched up neatly. They examined him to see if anything else had changed. Besides the wings he was fine, except for the fact that he’d spontaneously dropped twenty pounds. It was then they determined his marrow was gone and his bones were airy and lighter than what they would be without marrow.
When they cleaned the feathers Ray couldn’t help but admire the snowy color and the way they fluttered in the breeze giving his chills. The Hammel recruiter came the next morning and was a stern, harsh looking fellow. Luckily, he knew of Hammel from Kyle and when he was told he was going to be transferred he was nervous but not nearly as terrified as he knew Kyle had been when he’d started spontaneously popping from one place to another. One problem. He and Kyle didn’t get along very well. When Raylaigh arrived he was no longer under the protection of his eldest brother and at the mercy of Kyle. Angry, with the childish idea that Ray was invading his space, Kyle bullied him. Being brothers, however, when others teased Ray, Kyle had a tendency to get violent in Raylaigh’s defense. Eventually things cooled down but Kyle still reserved the right to make Ray’s life miserable, which he had a tendency to do if Raylaigh invaded his space or if he just felt like it.
In his first year Ray played basketball, something he’d done all his life. But one bad hit from a fellow player and Ray’s arm snapped like a twig when he fell. He was bandaged for most of the year. He still hasn’t really figured out that he has to be more careful with his new bones. It was a few more months, when it was a broken leg, that Raylaigh was forbidden from contact sports. Luckily, they soon found that so long as the bones were set they healed rather quickly. Knowing he was a fan of sports the swimming coach took him in and with special compresses over his wings he could swim very well. He also started running and only played basketball recreationally where he was less likely to get injured. Raylaigh was very shy when he started at Hammel and he felt like he was constantly hiding. Sports helped him come out of his shell and meet people.
He felt different than he knew his parents would want. He thought a little change was in order. He got his ear pierced. Kyle, of course, told their parents and Raylaigh got in a heap load of trouble. Ray did get Kyle back soon enough with a hidden alarm clock set for five in the morning. The earring didn’t solve his problem, though. He was struggling with a crush he had on a upperclassman, Jack, for a long time. When Raylaigh was fifteen he started to realize that Hammel had a strangely large and yet strong and confident homosexual population. Encouraged by a friend, whom he disclosed this secret, Raylaigh came out at a LGBT student meeting. It didn’t take long for Kyle to find out and then Van and Andrea. They were careful after much pleading not to tell their parents. He claimed it was because he wanted to tell them but he’s really just been delaying the inevitable since.
Being out at school allowed for a freedom that Raylaigh hadn’t realized he’d been missing before. He bloomed into a new person. No more hiding who he was. Raylaigh started making more friends. The upperclassman who Ray had a crush on found out and took advantage of him. During the day Jack didn’t even acknowledge Raylaigh’s existence, however come nightfall it was a rather abusive relationship. Raylaigh didn’t realize that at the time. Ray is rather breakable and he lied about at least one broken bone during that time. He always said it was because he was fragile, not that Jack was violent. Jack made Raylaigh feel unimportant and when they would fight Jack would strike out in anger then coddle Ray, saying he loved him and was sorry. He claimed he ignored Ray because he wasn’t strong enough to come out. Ray was very much in love and when they got to know each other more, Ray decided it was Jack’s rough childhood that made him this way and it wasn’t his fault. Jack had very strict rules and was extremely jealous and would often accuse Ray of cheating and would hardly let him speak to anyone.
This went on for several months until finally it stopped when the older student graduated with his brother last year and unbeknownst to Raylaigh a staff member got involved to make sure it stayed stopped. Nonetheless Ray was crushed that his first love tossed him aside so quickly. The alternating abuse and ignoring caused Raylaigh’s self esteem to plummet but at the same time it gave him freedom that the upperclassman had never allowed. He came to realize that the relationship was very destructive and he’s ashamed of it and doesn’t like to talk about it. Worse he is always looking over his shoulder when he’s out, very afraid that Jack will find him again. For a long time fear held Raylaigh back, he didn’t know how to react to the new found freedom he had. He loved people and so he started doing things and when no repercussions came he started to enjoy the freedom. It also pushed him away from the emotional side of relationships since Jack knew him the best and would sometimes use things Ray had told him against him. He wants to be in love but his idea of love is what he and Jack had and that terrifies him. He just claims he’s out to have fun.
For a long time Raylaigh was very young in appearance and rather short. However, in the summer when he turned sixteen he grew like a weed. Returning to school many people didn’t believe it was him and he just ate all the time. Constantly hungry, he was always willing to go somewhere for food. His romantic life since the upperclassman has been rather uneventful. This is the year, Raylaigh’s decided, that will define him. Kyle had finally graduated and was off a college and now Ray was without his annoying older brother at Hammel. He was free of people who would hold him back. In addition Andrea wasn’t showing any signs and Raylaigh was going to be happy if that stayed that way too.
Over the past four years Raylaigh’s spent at Hammel his power has grown. He is still learning a great deal about it. The growth spurt was detrimental to his power training. When he’d grown he’d also lost his sense of balance and flight became difficult and it often times feels like he’s just learning again. Luckily for Ray his trainer is patient and is willing to push him. Ray is relearning quickly but he’s started injuring himself again. Already this year he’s broken his wrist from a flight related fall and twisted his ankle several times tripping over the sidewalk and gotten bruised and bumped as he runs into things and bangs his head on low hanging objects. He is a walking and sometimes flying disaster. He is having to learn to deal with his new body as well as how to fly it. His wings had grown a bit with the growth spurt and he’s still learning to deal with extra wing length when he’s walking. It certainly doesn’t help his coordination.Roleplay ExampleWiping sweat from his brow Raylaigh narrowed his eyes and shook his head. He rolled his shoulders and scratched his forehead baring his teeth in effort. He slammed his pencil down and raked his hands through his hair. “Ugh! I don’t get it!” He cried dramatically. Who thought that it was a good idea for Raylaigh to be in Trig? He could barely do Algebra. Seriously what was he ever going to use this for? Why did he need to know the angle between two lines that looked very much perpendicular but could not be assumed to be so. Ray was frustrated and he pouted at the tutor who shook their head with a small smile on their face. He didn’t understand how someone could possibly be so happy doing math, much less why someone would chose to devote their lives to math.
Raylaigh made a clicking noise with his mouth and turned back to the page, giving it another go. The tutor was not going to help him, nor was he going to let Ray walk out of here without finishing the problem. “Alright, Ray, we can do this. Phew.” He muttered to himself giving himself an additional mental pep talk. He should have studied more, he just didn’t know how to study for math. Goodness. He took up the pencil again and bent over the page as though bringing his nose closer to the page would make it easier to see. He was just going to start something. He was sure he was breaking math as he slowly moved one variable to the other side of the equations. (sin^2(x) + cos^2(x)) Oh! That was a rule! Wasn’t it? What was it? Raylaigh clicked his tongue again and ran a hand though his hair. He circled it and wrote a ‘1’ under it. He wasn’t sure that was it but it was all he could think.
He copied the equation down and gaped at it. 1? Seriously? All that work… for 1?! He tried a glare up at the tutor who seemed amused more than anything else. He bent and put his pencil in his bag before turning the page in. He waved and was excited to get outside. He slung his messenger bag, with a little pin he’d stolen from a track team meeting with winged feet, over his shoulder. His wings folded very nicely over his angles but they did drag a bit on the ground if he wasn’t careful. He should be more aware, he’d gotten his feathers pulled more than once that way. They fluttered with Raylaigh’s excitement as he walked into the sun. They were rather small when it came down to it. He didn’t know how it all worked but he took a little sprinting and jumped airborne. His wings fluttered like hummingbird wings and he raced over the ground. He glided and dropped to the ground staggering a few feet as he came the dorms. What About You?Name: Izy
