IF she attempted over 95 mph(about the max speed of a minor tornado), it is likely Maud would feel intense exhaustion and not be able to keep it up for more then 2 minutes. The effects her of her power is intense sleepiness that makes her crash for a long time depending on how hard she works.(her powers are also effected by her emotions. For example, if she is sad, it is harder to summon a gale of over 10 mph but when she is angry, the Staff has estimated a speed of nearly 180 mph though this has yetto be seen)

General Appearance: Maud has never particularly cared about her appearance. She never learned to stand up straight properly so she slumps often, worsened by hunching over when bicycling in road races. She looks constantly tired and wears a tiny smile all the time, only growing to a full blown grin that creates crows' feet at her eyes when she makes eye contact with another. Her voice is a low yet holds an oddly calming drone that seems to vibrate with a soft rhythm; her laugh is strong and infectuous. Her tawny hair and fair skin is complicated by grey-hazel eyes. On the rare occasion she goes shopping, she usually chooses pale purple, white, autumn orange or navy blue. Her outfits ranging mostly from skinny jeans to strapless summer dresses, to college sweatshits and jeggings. Her casual dress is followed by her hair being down most of the time or the rare ponytail, make-up is a faux pas for her: A, because it always gets in her large eyes and, B, because it's a pain in the butt to put on!(I would like my extra hour of sleep in the morning THANKS!!)
Personality: Maud has a charming, patient, almost saintly attitude that draws people of all ages to her. Her fondness for small children and her ability to converse with elders gives her an irresistable charm that sometimes pisses off people her own age. Maud's first encounter with a new person can be awkward, but she has an adrable awkward charm that makes her easy to converse with, after some small talk, she can open up to you and become your friend quitw easily. She is diagnosed with Dysgraphia meaning her writing is large and awkward but she can draw amazingly well. Every now and then, Maud will seem to explode with energy, literally bouncing off the walls and laughing manically, it's hilarious to see and an absoloute riot to participate in. Despite that, She is very self concious to other's emotions and doesnt like to hurt other peoples' feelings, probably making some think she intentionally babies them... But when she makes new friends, she is undyingly loyal and kind, giving them every benefit in her power. Her pride in her family is her major weakness, you insult her family, you even SUGGEST they are weak in any way, shape or form... All her kindness, patience and generousity disappears in a flash and her change is like night and day. She secretly has a very vicious and cold side that has never been shown to anyone else, when she is alone, she sometimes lets that side rip out and go berserk so she doesn't do it in front of someone else. She calls this one of her 'Seven Faces', and Maud is actualy ashamed of her 'Fury Face'.

Moving on. When it comes to history she tends to rattle on and on, never stopping and never failing to prove your every point WRONG(even though she'll apologize later...). But even if you're bored with it, honey, you brought this upon yourself! She is interested in the darker side of history, especially the Nazis much to many peoples' horror, she tries to hide this and usually does this successfuly... Unless of course you stumble upon her randomly. Maud's personality can be particularly volatile toward certain people but she tries her best to get along with everyone(Working out about 92% of the time) and she is not very good at self discipline. Meaning she procrastinates dangerously until the last minute.

History

Maud Anne Yancey was introduced to the world on March 18, 1998 at 11:48 P.M.. Maud has always been a happy person, no matter what. She's dealt with grief and disaster with a smile on her face.

Her family life is pleasant and quiet. Her father is Dr. Asa Green Yancey Jr. A renknowned african american child psychiatrist and the youngest son of Dr. Asa Green Yancey Sr, Doctor Martin Luther King Jr's surgeon. She has always had a strong connection with her father and grandfather even though she's been teased playfully as the 'Light Skin' of the family(Southern Family Humor x3).

Maud's Mother is Sally Elizibeth Coates, an experienced Emergency Room doctor known for her humor and great attitude. Maud always looks to her mother as an idol for dedication due to her work at four different hospitals. She is fond of her mother and is protective of her despite her mother's keenly hidden aggression and competitiveness that shaped Maud to the way she is now.

Diagnosed with Dysgraphia, it was never much of a big deal when she met others with problems such as hers. With her tenacity and ability to adapt, she was able to overcome most of her difficulties... Most of them. Maud spent grades pre through third at a private school but was eventually taken out due to the cost and put into a public school where she withdrew from the other children and remained in her own calming isolation until sixth grade, probably leading to her sympathy to outcasts and her social awkwardness. She made friends, found out she had a knack for speeches and making friends with people of all ages. Life got good. Real good.

As Maud remembers, on Febuary 21st, 2011, Maud was bicycling a race down Highway I-70 against two other racers. Suddenly, one of the races was buffeted by a passing semi and sent crashing into the median, knockin him unconcious, Maud slowed to a stop a few yards away, immediately rushing to her fellow bicyclist's side. She unconciously looked up and saw the other racer swerve into traffic behind her on order to avoid a collision.
" NO! STOP!!" She yelled, raising her hands shooting out toward the bicyclist and a tugging sensation in her gut. A gust of wind swerved into the other side of the racer, making their bike topple into the median and out of harms way. The world went spinning... And she woke up in a hospital, someone standing with her parents at her side. Thats when Hammel Institute introduced itself to her.

Maud started out rather awkwardly at Hammel, avoiding people from the school and trying to gravitate back into 'normal' and powerless society... It didn't work though, so she sank into herself and spent most of her time in the library, avoiding human contact. Slowly, slowly she is integrating back into the social hierarchy of school. Her awkwardness making it hard for her to relate with kids her own age but her knowledge of history making her an easy teacher's pet. Life is ok... Just ok.

Welcome to Hammel, Maud! It's always good to see new faces, and we're happy to have you. However, Maud needs a lot of changes in order to fit within our site and continuity.

First, you need to post the application in code. If you go to the Standard Application thread, there is a code box. Copy that into the window and edit your information into that. It looks like you copied the sample post format instead.

Also, please read through and check the entire application for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

And, please look at our Joining Guide for links and information about characters and the Hammel setting. Specifically, look at the FAQ and the Information about Powers.

Maud’s power is not acceptable for our site. As you have it described, it is too violent, grim, and gross for the setting. We aren’t a combat game, and so firing projectile missiles is an unnecessary power. Choose something else, and if you have powers questions, you can ask Sean, who is our powers mod. All powers require limitations and side effects, so be sure to work those into whatever you choose.

Everything flowing from this power has to be changed.

A play by is a celebrity face claim used to represent your character, not the player. I don’t know who the person in the picture is, but be sure to list the celebrity’s name here. For Hammel purposes, pictures must be of someone at least 13 years of age, and to be a celebrity, they must have their photos taken for money. Our Face Claim thread lists those celebrities already taken.

Her personality is contradictory. It’s fine if you want her to act differently around different people, since almost everyone does that to some degree, but it reads as disjointed and an excuse to have her behave however is most dramatic in a given moment. Pin down her personality under typical school circumstances. She can’t be so close to going on a murderous rampage; that is setting-breaking and not allowed. It has to change.

She needs more strengths and weaknesses. Her strength is at odds with her personality as such. If you want to rebuild her personality around being patient, this is great, but make sure the strengths and weaknesses match the personality as it’s rewritten.

Also, be careful not to godmode other players by telling them how they have to react to her.

As for her history: She can’t have murdered her family. That isn’t negotiable. As such, her family ties section and her history section need to be heavily revised. We treat issues of abuse and bullying seriously, and they have to be handled with respect and accuracy. What you’ve described is better befitting a Batman game than Hammel, which has a lighter, more whimsical atmosphere. Change her background to something more suited to the atmosphere, and be sure to read the FAQ and other profiles to get a feel for how Hammel works.

When you revise your history, be sure to include her recruitment and what she’s been up to since coming to Hammel. Include information about her manifestation. Depending on the power, Hammel recruiters would have brought her to school between a couple of days and two weeks. Keep this in mind.

Lastly, while the writing sample can come from other places, given that it’s so violent and setting-breaking, you might want to consider a different sample.

When you’ve revised Maud and the formatting, bump the thread so staff can take another look.

Hey there Maud! Thank you for the changes made so far! It definitely is more lighthearted now.

As for the powers that you requested: the answer is no, for both of them. We aren’t mystical and inanimate objects don’t have souls. May I advise you to check out our information on powers? There might be one there that could intrigue you. Of course the options are not limited to those.

The rest of the application shall be reviewed once you have found an appropriate power with limitations and side effects.

You were told during the last edit that your application won't be reviewed until you have a power with appropriate limitations and side effects. The power you've chosen is ambiguous, and unless clarified otherwise, is not on the recommended powers list. It's fine to choose a power not listed, as long as it has appropriate limitations and side effects and isn't setting-breaking. However, you've provided no description, no limitations, and no side effects. This is not acceptable. You must choose a power with limitations and side effects and a description of how it works, if not on the list. This isn't a request; it's a requirement.

Your application won't be given a full review until these changes have been made. However, your history section is problematic and reads as though you either haven't read our setting information and FAQ, or that you've read them and chosen to disregard our canon elements. Moving Right Along!


Hey there, Maud! Thanks for complying with the approval process so far and being so patient. We still have a bit of a ways to go to make the character acceptable for Hammel, so let's get cracking!

First, aerokinesis is a perfectly acceptable power. However, the level that you have her at is much closer to weather manipulation in terms of overall strength, though far too focused in spectrum for that power. Once again, we'd like to reiterate that this isn't a combat site, so being able to create gusts of wind up to 200mph is really over the top (considering that hurricane force winds start at 76mph). Additionally, even if you could get the wind that high, the side effects would be incredibly severe - much more than what you have listed. At seventeen, Maud could have the potential for a maximum windspeed of 50mph, so please base your levels of strain and side effects around that.

As a reminder, coma and death are not acceptable side effects in general, so please find others. The dizziness, exhaustion, and light-headedness are all perfectly acceptable, so other things in that vein would be fine; perhaps shortness of breath or having perpetually cool skin?

Next, I'd like more detail in Miss Yancy's General Appearance and Personality sections.

For her Appearance, here are some questions to consider: How does she carry herself? What's her default expression, or how do certain emotions influence her facial features (does she wrinkle her nose when she frowns, purse her lips when upset, etc.)? What are her favorite colors to wear? Does she dress strictly casual, or does she like to dress up every once in a while? Does she wear make-up or put her hair up regularly?

For her Personality, we'd like to see some negative traits as well as positive ones: does her patience make her cave to arguments to avoid the conflict? Is she viewed as a doormat because of her shyness and/or patience, or maybe just pretentious or stuck-up because of the combination? Does she tend to prattle on when someone gets her going on a history subject she likes, even if people seem like they're bored?

Not all of these questions need to be answered specifically - they're just here to give you a guideline on what sort of things we're looking for in general as clarification.

Considering that we take all sorts of mental and physical disorders/disabilities seriously here at Hammel, I have to question why Maud has ADHD in her Likes section and what the reasoning behind it is. Does she have it, and if so why isn't it listed in her Personality section? If not, did she know someone with it? Does she understand the full scope of the side-effects? Please explain this either elsewhere in the application (Personality or History, wherever it may apply), or discuss it with a moderator.

Many of Maud's Weaknesses are Personality based in nature, yet are not explored at all in her Personality section. Please fix this - her laziness and guilt-trips would make for wonderful negative traits.

The first paragraph of her History section also seems to be more Personality based - why not shift it over and use it as a reason to explain why she dislikes being called "cute"? Additionally, there are other issues with the History that I'll walk you through so we can get all the edits down in one fell swoop.

First, you mention that Maud is very strong in her legs and has a number of physical hobbies, yet her Weaknesses state that she's very physically weak and dislikes being outdoors unless it's overcast (not always the best weather for outdoor activities, unless she was raised in a very cloudy area). This is contradictory and needs to be edited.

Second, I'd like to know where she was born and raised. It gives a little more detail to the character and could explain some of why she doesn't like going out in the sun, or why she likes physical activity. It could also give some insight into other aspect of her, like her belief systems or cultural upbringing.

Third, I'm wondering about this "Immortal Lady" thing you mentioned. Are you talking about a myth/legend, or perhaps about Henrietta Lacks, who was the propagator of the HeLa cells used to make polio vaccines? Remember that metas were only discovered in the early 1900's, and that no power grants eternal life/youth or immortality, so I need some explanation into this person, why they interest Maud, and how her grandfather knew about them.

Fourth, given the new limitations being put on her powers, the force of the wind could not have knocked over the car when her powers manifested. Please have another manifestation that makes a bit more sense with the setting, and make sure to give us an age of manifestation (11-14) and how long it took the recruiters from Hammel to arrive (up to 14 days, less if someone was put in the hospital).

Lastly, since Maud is 17 and the latest she would have been recruited is 14, we need to know how she's spent the last few years at Hammel. Has she been a good students? Gotten along well with people? Has she had trouble adjusting to living in Vermont? Did she move to the dorms, or did her parents move across the country to support her?

As an overall note, please give as much detail in the History as possible - this explains to us why your character is the way they are through their circumstances, and gives us more knowledge about the character and their role in the world than we'd ever know otherwise. As always, more detail is better!

There's no need to apologize for lack of perfection - this is a learning process, and some need for editing is assumed.

Remember that ADHD has other symptoms other than mania and hyperfocus on certain subjects. As this is a medical diagnosis, this needs to be described accurately and treated with respect - please provide more description of her particular side-effect and treatment(s) in the application, specifically in the Personality and History sections.

There's a point in her Weaknesses that states that she is very physically weak, but that doesn't jive with later mentions of having very strong legs and doing competitive cycling. Please reconcile this somehow - are only her legs strong? Can she not lift very much? Specifics (or simply scrapping that weakness) are needed.

In the History section, you've done very well at fleshing things out and making more acceptable decisions in the backstory. Good work! However, there are still a few corrections that need to be made.

Maud would have been recruited and taken to Hammel by the age of 14. No exceptions. You have now been reminded of this three times. If we have to remind you of this again, this application will be declined and we will not review it again.

This being said, everything stated about her being a junior in high school must be restructured to fit this timeline. She can still compete in junior-level (i.e. 12-16 year old) bicycling competitions, but she can be no older than 14 at the time of her manifestation. She can still play clarinet, however she would have been doing so at Hammel for the last three years. It's also possible that she won that poetry contest, but she would have done so while attending Hammel, given your timeline.

Considering her parents' work, it is unlikely that they would have moved to Vermont with her three years ago only to leave her in the dorms now, so she would have also been in the dorms for that long or she would not be in them at all and would be still living with her parents in town.

To put it simply, Maud has been attending Hammel since she was 14 years old, and everything must line up with that accordingly. If you have any questions about how else this can be done, please contact a staff member.

Hey! This is much better, but I still have a few notes.

1) This power has limitations on the speed of the wind, but requires some general side effects as well. It's fine that the use of the power exacerbates it, but she should have some side effects that don't have to do with just wind speed. These can include dizziness, fatigue or something else.

2) I still don't see a large impact of the ADHD in her history or personality. I would suggest removal at this point, but if you prefer to include it please research it and include it more in the personality and history: for example, challenges in schools, psychiatrist visits, etc.

3) What has Maud been doing since she arrived at Hammel?
