The BasicsName: Calvin Lawry Brewer
Nicknames: Cal
Age: Fifty-four
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Police Officer
Powers: None.
Play By: Kevin SpaceyThe DetailsHair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Hazel, a bit more brown than green.
Any Piercings? None.
Any Tattoos? None.
Any Scars? The only notable scar that he has is a faded gunshot scar on his left shoulder from a bad night on the job. He has actually been rather lucky in his line of work for not having more scars.
General Appearance: Cal stands at the average height of 5'10”, and when he is working, he makes sure that he makes the most of it. He keeps his back straight, his posture confident. His whole demeanor is more casual when he isn't in cop mode, and that goes for his clothing as well. He wears well-fitting suits when there is occasion to, but most of the time it looks as though he doesn't put a lot of thought into his wardrobe. And in truth, he doesn't put a lot of thought into what others think of the way he looks, unless they are colleagues or criminals. Despite his lack of care for how others perceive him, he does hate to be dirty, and so his clothing may not fit him perfectly and may not be of the highest quality, but it is always clean.
He often looks like he is anti-social, or even brooding, but in reality, that's just his thinking face. When he smiles, his dimples show, and the sincerity of his smiles can light up a room. He prefers to keep clean-shaven, but if things have been keeping him busy, he'll have shadows. He keeps his hair short and manageable, and if it grows out a bit, he brushes it back. He's aged quite well, retaining most of his natural hair color. His facial hair typically comes in gray, however, but it is not that noticeable since he keeps it shaved most of the time. He is definitely one for eye contact; how is he supposed to know what someone is thinking if he doesn't meet their eyes?
Personality: Calvin is driven by his career. He puts the most time into it compared to other parts of his life, and he feels that it is what defines him. Because of this he has the reputation of being a reliable but sometimes too serious person.
He has a few contradictions in the person that he is. As a police officer, he picks up on things about people. He can usually tell when they are lying, and he is a good judge of character at first meeting. He can answer difficult questions easily under those circumstances. But when it's not about the job he can unintentionally be rather cold. He doesn't read emotions well in a social context, and his tendency to say things that are on his mind at times hurt other people. This at least he realizes, but he feels that it is better to be honest and a little cruel than to sugarcoat things and end up hurting a person worse. Since he has not had many friends and lovers over the past ten or so years of pure devotion to the job, he is uncomfortable expressing his emotions in words. Not everyone can pick up on what a certain smile means from him, or how much effort actually went into that comforting pat on the shoulder. To put it simply, Cal is a bit awkward.
As stated before, Calvin doesn't usually care what he looks like. But if he is enamored with someone (not that he would necessarily admit it) their opinion means a lot to him, and he'll go out of his way to look nice for them. 'Word vomit' is another indicator that Calvin is feeling a surge of emotions that he isn't used to. Normally a quiet man who keeps to himself, he might start delving into his history or talking about something that he heard the other day. He has had few relationships and fewer one night stands. He doesn't think a night of fun is worth the drama that might come along later, but he's only human. Occasionally he makes exceptions to the rule.
He is not really the joking type. A few dry comments here or there dripping with sarcasm, sure, but it takes a lot to get him to laugh. So be prepared for some awkward silences if you have a jokester! He is far from the cliché tortured cop, though. He is not phased anymore by his job, he knows that even if he has made mistakes he is making a difference that is mostly positive.
On the subject of meta-humans, Calvin thinks of them just like he does anyone else. Yes, some of them are dangerous and a threat. But there are likely more that just want to live their lives. Cal makes a point of minding his own business in these matters and all else, not judging people for much.Your VicesLikes:
-Classical Dance: It's not something that he readily admits to, or something that he gets to do very often.
-Museums: Especially military and ancient history.
-Guns: He isn't a fanatic but he does enjoy going to the shooting range.
-1980's Music: Pop, rock, all of it. But he has a special place in his heart for the weird British music that came from that time.
-Coffee: His own personal addiction, Cal has to have at least two cups of coffee in the morning.
-Large Dogs: He doesn't have one due to the fact he is away from home so often, but he had a Labrador as a child.
Dislikes:
-Addiction: Cigarettes, alcohol, sex, anything that can consume a person.
-Physical Contact: Well, it's not that he dislikes it exactly. It's just that if he doesn't know a person well, he finds it inappropriate. A handshake would be fine, though.
-Blind Dates: Nothing makes him sweat more than having such expectations placed on him by someone he has never met.
-Children: Again, not so much that he doesn't like them. Some of them are alright. But kids don't tend to like him because of his serious personality, and that makes him uneasy around them.
-Traveling: He's the kind of guy that would rather stay at home if he got a vacation. He's a bit of a hermit.
-Religious Extremists: This is kind of obvious. He has nothing against religion, though he is not religious himself. He just doesn't like when people twist religious ideals to explain away their prejudices.
-Dressing Up: Formal things are necessary sometimes, but he finds them tedious and uncomfortable.
Strengths:
-Can usually tell if a person is lying
-His reliability
-Skill with a handgun and physically stronger than he appears
-Working with cars
-Good at keeping secrets
Weaknesses:
-Romance
-While he is literate, his handwriting is dreadful and he gets frustrated when people use an overly complicated vocabulary
-Math
-Juggling work with a personal life
-Depending on the person, Cal may not be a good candidate for team work.
Fears: Killing someone, whether it's while he is on patrol or through a random car accident or something. His other great fear is the day that he has to retire because he's not quite sure what to do with himself when that time comes.
Secret: Not really. People don't know a lot about him unless they're close friends but that is less because he has a lot of secrets and more because he's just not that vocal about himself. Although... There have been issues in the bedroom, if you know what I mean, due to Cal's nervousness with people that he likes.Family TiesFather: Corbin James Brewer, former Math teacher, deceased.
Mother: Kendra Lee Brewer nee Lane, housewife.
Siblings: None.
Any Other Important People: Cal was named after his maternal grandfather who had died before he was born. He has no pets now but he used to have a Labrador named Chuck when he was growing up.HistoryCal had a pretty normal childhood in which his parents followed traditional (in some cases outdated) gender roles. His father was the bread winner and a proud man who, between teaching jobs, would take any work that he could get to support his family. His mother was a generally kind-hearted woman and was always there to listen to Cal. She was also, unfortunately, a bit smothering and over-protective as she had an irrational fear that even at a very young age he might become friends with someone that would end up dangerous. She never did trust people with 'powers'. She was for whatever reason of the belief that there was something wrong with them, though Cal and his father both insisted that if there was a God, obviously he created them for a reason.
When Cal was twelve, his father passed away from a heart attack. He'd died in relative peace, which Cal was always grateful for, but the death would still haunt him for a long time. He'd seen other dead bodies before at funerals, but it was something else to be looking at someone that he'd seen every day of his life in a casket. There were no long-standing effects of the experience except that Calvin took on his father's example of being a hard-working family man and got himself a job just as soon as he was old enough. Clearly he took the calling a little too seriously, often neglecting his personal life. His studies were great, and a few close friends stuck around, but his girlfriend May did not. Cal became a police officer at the age of twenty-one.
His experiences were sometimes overwhelming, given the larger-than-usual number of meta-humans in the area. But Cal did alright for himself not having any powers. He learned over time how to handle those with powers, but he preferred to be partnered with people who could handle them when he couldn't. Other meta-humans were on the force, and Cal came to rely on them. For his part, he has never really had a problem with people who had abilities that he didn't. But he has had to deal with being underestimated by some people.Roleplay Example[Post from another site with a very different kind of character.]
It wasn't often that Anthony was sent home because there wasn't a lot of work to be done at the hospital, but it happened from time to time.
He felt relieved to be leaving. It meant that not enough people had hurt themselves, hurt each other, that they needed the planned-for assistance. Most of the time it was the other way around, and he was forced to work longer hours than he'd intended on. It was also good because it meant that he would be coming home earlier than he'd expected, earlier than Lorena expected. That brought out Anthony's oft-dormant romantic side, and he decided that before he got home he would buy something for her. He debated on the what. Flowers were nice, but they were temporary, and he didn't know when he would get a chance like this again. He thought about jewelry, but that was something that he did get her more often. She didn't have to ask for it, he got her a new piece of jewelry whenever they reached some important event in their lives, or just when he felt like it. The mother of his children deserved no less, and probably more than he could ever give.
In the end, he decided on something that would seem less romantic to most people, but meant something to him. A new watch. It was reminiscent of the first gift that he'd ever given her, and it represented the years between here and now. Would she make the connection, or was that all in Anthony's head? Either way, he picked one of the most unique that he could find. Since watches weren't something that they discussed regularly, he didn't know what style she would actually prefer. But it was too late to worry about that... It was a spur of the moment decision, and he felt like it would ruin it to over think.
Anthony came home to find it quiet as it usually was. It seemed like an eternity ago that the twins and Emma were running around, making messes and noise as children did. It would almost be a relief to have that again with Matthew. The passage of time sometimes took Anthony's breath away. Sometimes it felt like yesterday that he fell in love with Lorena. Other times, it felt like another life. Nothing made that fact heavier than seeing his sons and his daughter, full-sized people at this point, and thinking of how small they were once upon a time. “Lori?” he called, wondering where she might be at this time of day by herself. He reached the living room and smiled, until he saw that she was... crying? “Did something...” he trailed off, noticing the book. He had to smile to himself, a bittersweet smile. He came and sat beside her, looking at the picture of Emma that the page had been left on. “It's hard to believe how long ago this was, isn't it?” He looked up at Lorena and wiped away some of her tears. When it was just the two of them, it could easily have been when they started out. What About You?Name: Shalie is fine. It's what I'm known as elsewhere.
