Sometimes, late into the day when the sun is high in the sky and the school is empty, Mathis spends his rare "alone time" within the confines of the Home Ec room. He'll shut the door and pretend that he's back at home. It helped him coop with losing his family and, for the most part, his home. Everett never seemed to mind it either since Mathis was the least destructive in the kitchen (that and his dorm didn't have a proper kitchen). Today seemed like one of those days, at least to the mimic it did. So Mathis grinned almost to himself, running his fingers through his hair before heading to the Home Ec room, already picturing the pie he'd be making. Since summer was right around the corner Mathis was dying to make some apple pie, and if he had any apples left he'd make some cider to.
A few minutes later the boy was shoving open the Home Ec door, calling out in his usual too-loud voice to make sure it wasn't occupied. Upon inspection to verify that he indeed was not going to have to share an oven or some such thing, Mathis threw his overflowing backpack onto a table and rolled up his sleeves. His eyes were lighting up with an eager energy and he was trying really hard not to start bouncing about as he gathered the ingredients and pre-heated the oven. He unloaded all the baking supplies to make his pie from scratch and paused only once to turn the radio onto a country station before setting to work.
_bit later_
The window was thrown open so a soft breeze could swirl into the room, carrying in the scent of high heat and the promise of a storm while spreading the smell of cinnamon and apples around the nearby campus. Mathis glanced up to look out at the grounds, smiling to himself as he hears a couple of birds talking before he turns back to diligently stirring the baking sugar. It simmered inside the pot, not yet dissolving fully but not burning either. The mimic frowned and double checked the heat before turning his attention to the soon-to-be-caramel. Underneath the stove the pie was faithfully bubbling a bit as it cooked into a golden brown.
