Breakfast of Champions (Mathis.)

As promised, Cam had shown up at Mathis’ dorm room bright and early. He wasn’t wearing anything special, but he didn’t want to look like a shlub either. So, for today since he was cooking, he was wearing jeans, and a plain dark blue t-shirt. Today would be fun, and hopefully Mathis didn’t have anything too special in mind for lunch. Cam wanted to win this contest!

“Heyo!” Cam said as soon as Mathis opened the door, pulling the brunet into a hug, his bag of ingredients bumping Mathis’ back gently. “Hope you like Eggs Benedict, ‘cause they’re my fave.” And Cam let himself in like he was an old friend, putting his things on the counter. Cam ran a hand through his hair, content that since if felt right it must look right, and then he went to wash his hands.

He had brought the works. Eggs, English muffins, bacon, Canadian bacon, and he was going to make the hollandaise sauce from scratch. The sun was already shining into the room, but Cam felt just as bright. “How’d ya sleep?” He asked, poking through the cupboards for the different cooking utensils he’d need.

Mathis woke up early in the morning, per usual, and went on his morning run. He circled Hammel's campus before jogging back to his dorm without really wanting to continue his run due to the excitement of getting to hang out with a new friend. There was always something about meeting new people who would keep him company that made the mimic smile. As Mathis stumbled into his surprisingly empty room, breathing just a bit hard than he would have liked, he sort of realized he'd need to shower before Cameron came over. Somehow it seemed it would be rude to smell of sweat when a new friend brought you breakfast. So the mimic ran about the room like some kind on miniature tornado, collecting a pair of dark jeans as well as a soft light gray shirt that actually wasn't his but belonged to his older brother's friend Antosha. Once collected Mathis continued his whirlwind of movement to the bathroom and took what, to his knowledge, had to be the world's fastest shower.

Rubbing his hair with the towel currently around his neck, Mathis was barely back in his dorm room when he heard a knock at the door. "Coming!" he called out before taking the few steps to throw open his door. The poor mimic didn't even have time to welcome his new friend back before he was drawn into a hug, though he did manage to return it after only a few moments hesitation. As Cameron just sort of made himself at home in the dorm, Mathis finally caught up as to what was going on and gave his new friend a rather cheerful wave while pulling the towel off of his neck. “Mornin’ Cam! And yeah, eggs sound real good.”

He raised his eyebrows as Cameron started bringing out all the ingrediants, confused as to how many people Cam thought they’d be bringing (not that Mathis is going to let the food to waste). With a small smile he walked over to help his new friend find all the cooking supplies since he happened to know the area a lot better. “I slept alright, ‘bout the same as usual. How ‘bout you?” he asked in response, a larger grin pulling at his lips.

Cam grinned to himself. “Cool,” he said, turning one of the stove element’s to medium and plopping a frying pan down. “I slept pretty good,” he said, taking what he needed as he went. Truthfully, he hadn’t slept that much because he was so excited about today.

He hadn’t made Eggs Benedict in so long, but they were going to be delicious. He also put down a small pot and began working on the hollandaise sauce. Man, just the smell of it all was making his mouth water. Mathis better effin appreciate this!

With his one track mind, Cam was on the way to getting breakfast done. He split a couple English muffins in half and waved a half at Mathis. “Toasted or not toasted?” He asked, looking around for the appliance. If there wasn't one, he could improvise by using the oven.

Clapping his hands together, now all they had to do was wait. “Prepare to have your mind blown,” Cam said, making jazz hands across his face.

The mimic watched as the other began to make himself right at home, grinning to himself at the sense of well home he got from watching Cameron. Like he'd somehow been teleported back to Texas, before he was a meta, back when his mom would wake him up in morning with eggs and bacon and swift kick up the backside. Mathis suppressed the urge to laugh at his own memories and instead focused on grinning even more, leaning against the counter beside the oven.

His blue eyes scanned over the manipulator's form while his smile slowly turned into a frown. Even the great smell coming from the hollandaise sauce wasn't enough to distract Mathis from his observation. "You look tired!" he blurted out with as much tact the boy possessed. Which is to say- none.

After that stunning announcement, Mathis turned to try to help Cam make food. Which was mostly involving trying not to get in the way, and trying not to reach out to sample anything that was close enough to him. However at Cam's next words he grinned and instantly popped down to his knees to remove the toaster oven from the cabinets. "Had ta hide it awhile ago. Woke up one mornin' and found toast completely burned on the inside of it." he explained, standing back up to put it on the counter beside the stove.

Mathis watched as the other finished preparing the food before grinning and clapping his own hands like he'd helped a massive amount. "You aren't gunna blow my mind. 'Cause I'll be busy blowing yours for lunch." He responded easily, reaching out to poke his new friend's cheek in an attempt to halt the jazz hands. "Speaking of! I still kinda gotta plan that out..." he added on with a nervous laugh, scratching the back of his neck.

Cam was a natural cook and taught himself everything he knew. There was something intoxicating about cooking, and he really liked making people happy because when they ate his food, they seemed to really enjoy it. A small smile stayed on his face while he maneuvered around a kitchen that wasn’t his own – Mathis being nearby was certainly putting the blond in a good mood.

Glancing over at Mathis’ exclamation, Cam could only chuckle softly, using the handle of his stir spoon to poke Mathis in the ribs. “I didn’t just go for a run and have all this adrenaline pumping into me.” Well, there was that, and Cam had a lot more drama in his life than he was willing to share. Not with someone he was trying to have fun with.

When Mathis did try to start breakfast without Cam, the blond smacked the other boy’s hand away. He could wait until it was all finished! Cam didn’t mind that Mathis was trying to help, so long as nothing got burnt, Cam had a little bit of patience. After Mathis placed the toaster on the counter, Cam plugged it in and double checked it for burnt toast. “Roommates?” He asked, putting in the English muffins and making sure the setting was on golden brown.

Cam laughed, the poke to his face only making it dimplier. “Well before you do that, we gotta have breakfast first,” Cam said, finding some plates to put everything on just as the muffins popped out. He quickly put the pair on one plate and popped in another two for himself. He put some Canadian bacon on top of the muffins, an egg on each half, and then covered it in hollandaise sauce. And for the final touch, bacon went on top of that.

Putting the plate in Mathis’ hands, Cam put his hands on Mathis’ shoulders and gave him a little shove towards the table to start eating. “I’ll be right there!” He said, going back to do what he just did a second time. He’d also brought some orange juice and apple juice, since he wasn’t sure what Mathis liked better, and that was already sitting on the table.

“Hope ya like it,” Cam said, sitting across from Mathis at the tiny table every dorm room had. He wouldn’t take a single bite until Mathis did, that was his only rule.

Mathis for the most part self taught but he had started out his love of cooking back home with his mom. His mom never followed his dad strict ideals about what a man should be and taught the food loving boy how to make all sorts of sugary concoctions late into the night, usually by candlelight because it always made the situation more fun. The mimic wasn't a natural born cook, not by a long shot, and he burned more cookies when he was learning than he cared to admit. So he didn't get an intoxicating rush when he cooked. That intoxication was given strictly by physical exercise, usually when he was playing a game or dribbling a ball.

The mimic laughed quickly as his ribs were poked, holding a hand to his side to pretend he was wounded. "You have killed me, you fiend!" he joked, giving his friend a wide grin as he fell to his knees. His breaths came in obviously faked gasps as he plopped backwards onto his back, grinning up at Cam even more. "I never even gotta taste your food.." After only half a second of having his eyes shut in 'death' Mathis cracked open one of his eyes and then jumped back up. "Nope. The thought of food healed me."

He ignored the light smacks to his hand and respectfully kept away from the food. His mom used to the same thing (only worse) when he and his brother tried to steal food. Except she would always casually glance over to where there were plates of left overs waiting for them. Here, though, he was pretty sure Cam would just keep slapping him away and make the poor mimic starve until the food was completely done. "Yeah... I got three of them. I don't really know Connor that well but Damion's really weird and Oth is this lil' bear shifter. I leave food out for Oth in the mornings 'cause he's young but I'm not sure if he gets 'em 'cause I'm never actually... I haven't met him yet." Kind of embarrassing considering Matty usually made it his mission to meet everyone in his life.

"well... We gotta watch those movies or something too, right? Or didja come up with a plan for today?" He was trying so hard not to just rest his head on Cam's shoulder to watch him prepare the food. So instead the mimic just decided to hover behind Cam, staring as the other's hands as he created the magic breakfast. Which, in all honesty, looked a lot better than what his mom would make. Usually back home he was treated to eggs, or pancakes, or grits, or biscuits and gravy; nothing as 'fancy' as what Cam was currently throwing together.

With a huge grin he took the plate and practically ran over to the tiny table that was currently playing host to some orange juice and apple juice. As he skidded into the chair, setting the plate before him, Mathis quickly pouring himself some of the orange juice before glancing over to make sure Cam was coming over. Once the light manipulator was settled, he grinned and grabbed a fork to saw off part of the concoction, popping it into his mouth to happily chew on.

"It's real good!" His grin increased-if that is even possible-and continued to take bites quite similar to that of a starving person. It didn't take long for the mimic to finish the meal and he reached out to grab the orange juice, taking a small drink to clear his mouth before letting his grin fade away. "Y'know. We could probably go in town or somethin' for a bit?"

Cam laughed, watching Matty kneel on the floor. The brunet was a riot. “They say only the good die young,” Cam stated, the last part of the sentence coming out like the well-known song. Shaking his head at Matty’s antics, Cam only stared at the younger boy. “Where do you get all that energy after a run?” Cam scratched his head. “It makes no sense.” Shouldn’t Matty be taking a nap or something?

“I got three roommates too,” he said, “pretty much the same boat. I know Maddie, Madison pretty well and Vrases only just got there but we seem to be getting along just fine, but I’ve yet to see Oliver. Guess he’s kinda shy.” It wasn’t a big deal to Cam, he had a lot of other people to see and hang out with who didn’t also happen to live with him.

“Nope, no plan,” Cam said, because honestly he had forgotten about the movies until now. Cam had no idea what Matty was thinking, and though he had to admit he was interested in the brunet, he wasn’t going to say anything about it. Not yet. Cam, with all his practice in cooking, made the meal making look easy. Eggs Benedict also happened to be his fave breakfast.

Sitting across from Matty, Cam also poured himself some o.j. – his fave juice. He watched Mathis eat for a moment before digging into his own breakfast. Cam laughed, eating his food like it was to be his last meal. “Either it’s actually good, or you’re just hungry,” he smirked and swallowed the bite in his mouth. “My dad says that your stomach is the best chef, but really it was just an excuse to say that if you’re hungry, you’ll eat whatever’s put in front of you.” Oh well, at least Matty seemed to be enjoying it.

Cam nodded. “Yeah sure,” he said, wiping at his lips, “what do you need? We can take my truck.” Cam smiled and stood up, quickly whisking away their plates and cutlery, filling the sink with soapy water. Cam went all out for those he was sweet on. “So, you think you can top that?” Cam asked, scrubbing at their dishes, casting Matty a challenging glance.

There was a pause as Mathis stared at Cameron, before splitting into his usual grin. "So... If I ain't die young does that make me bad?" He pondered with a joking tone, leaning in to bump his shoulder against the blonde's. At the question his grin only widened and he practically bounced in his spot. "Well y'see here... I ain't never not got energy." This statement was followed by quiet laughter.

"Wait... Oliver? Oliver Barnes?" He paused, waiting for the light manipulator to respond before clapping his hands suddenly. "I play basketball with him. He's on my team. I didn't know y'all roomed together! Yeah, yeah. He's real shy 'bout people he don't know but I'd love ta introduce you two if you'd be willin'. He's a super nice guy and real smart, he loves writing in this little notebook'a his." The mimic paused for breath before continuing his rant on Cam's roommates. "I know Vrases too! He'sa good frienda mine. We go work out together a bunch in the gym. Didja know me and him have the same power?"

Mathis grinned as he drank another gulp of his own orange juice, carefully putting his fork over the pitifully empty plate. His response was a quick shrug and another cheek splitting grin. "Well y'know... I'm always hungry." This was followed by more laughter before he leaned back in his chair. "Y'know... Mama used to say that the way ta a man's heart was through his stomach." Which was as much an answer to what Cam's dad used to say as anything the mimic could come up with.

While Cameron whisked away the dishes, Mathis hummed thoughtfully about what he could serve Cameron to try and wow him with his cooking skills. After a moment the mimic bounced onto his feet and walked over to the small kitchen space, opening up cabinets to check his ingredients, mentally preparing a shopping list. He had all the spices he needed and then some, as well as the salt and flour, and butter was in the fridge. All he needed really was the specific kosher salt, meat, and okra if he could find it. "I need ta get some steak, and okra, and I gotta stop by my brother's place for a pot and a meat tenderizer. Maybe some apples. After that I can beat you for sure. Oh! And I gotta pick up some kosher salt if the stores got it. If not I could use sea salt but the taste ain't gunna be the same..." He hummed in thought and walked away to go check that the hundred dollar bill was still in his backpack, otherwise his plan was screwed.

“Right, exactly,” Cam said, before fluffing up Matty’s hair, “‘cause you’re the worst person I know.” He said it in a teasing way, and hopefully Matty wouldn’t take offence to the statement. “You ain’t never not got energy?” Cam repeated, an eyebrow raised. “That’s a good quote for you.” Definitely something that should go in the yearbooks.

“Yeah, I think so,” Cam said, unsure of the last name. The blond smiled to himself as Mathis got all excited over knowing his roommates. Mathis was just so… he made Cam happy, and like they should spend more time together. “Awesome! Yeah, I’d love to actually meet him, just probably not on the basketball court, I don’t really play sports. Not well.” He laughed at himself and nodded as Matty continued to talk, about Vrases now. “Really?” Cam asked, his interest piqued. “What’s your power anyways?” Cam was pretty sure they hadn’t talked about that.

“Always having energy and always hungry, yeah, makes sense,” Cam pointed out, grinning to himself. Most young men had voracious appetites though, so he wasn’t surprised at all. “That’s a popular saying,” Cam said, because there wasn’t more to say.

Watching Matty open up most of the cupboards in the kitchen, Cam laughed softly to himself, downing the rest of his o.j. Today was going to be a lot of fun! “Steak?” He questioned. “That costs a lot more than a couple of eggs and bread…” Now Cam was going to feel guilty – he hadn’t thought about the cost. “I can help pay for some of it,” he insisted, putting the clean dishes on the drying rack before drying his hands on a towel. “I know a store that has all that,” Cam said with a grin on my face, “wanna take my truck?”

Cam waited for Matty to check his pockets before waiting at the door for the brunet, a smile on his face. He planned on buying something while they were out too, but it was a surprise. The weather was beautiful out as the two boys made their way to the student parking lot. Cam pushed the unlock button for his truck, and slipped into the driver’s seat.

“Damn the seats are hot!” Cam said, slipping on his sunglasses and putting the windows down. “Hope ya didn’t spend too much time doing your hair today,” he said, kicking it into reverse and setting their course for a mom and pop grocery store that had everything they needed. The steaks would be super fresh.
