SUE: Let's Eat (Marley and Naozumi)

No electricity means no freezers. No freezers means melted ice cream. Better not let it go to waste.

The cafeteria. One of Naozumi’s favorite places in addition to the training rooms and his very own bedroom. Yes, Nao loved the cafeteria, and for obvious reasons too. It wasn’t quite mom’s home cooking, but it was homey and delicious in it’s own right. A lot better than the food at his former school.

Nao rushed through to the lunch line, eager to see what was on the menu for today. His tummy was rumbly. He got a very generous serving of their choice of meat and veggies and starch, then rushed to the checkout to use his meal credits.

That’s when the lights went out.

The entire room went completely silent for a moment, before erupting into clusters of murmurs and mutters.

Of course, Nao, the absent-minded kid, was nearly oblivious even to the lack of light and continued on…right into the girl in front of him that he didn’t even realize he couldn’t see. Luckily, the tray didn’t drop, but some of the food did launch forward onto the back of the girl’s shirt. It was too bad it was too dark to see even that.

One of the few reasons Marley ever left her bedroom to face the world was food. While her classes and training were mandatory, food was one of the only reasons she could be lured from the confinement of her room. Even if the cafeteria food was abysmal at times. Teenaged girls had to eat. If Marley could survive off of the air in her room alone, she would, but alas.

So she stood in line, trying to decide what on the cafeteria menu was the least gag-worthy, settling for a sandwhich and some water that was probably never going to fill her up enough. But at least she'd be able to keep it down. She was waiting in line a bit impatiently when, suddenly, everything when dark.

Her eyes widened, first believing she must have had something to do with it. But her heart rate returned to normal when she realized that she couldn't have done that. She was tired. She would have felt the energy bubble up inside her if she were to cause a power outage big enough to take out the whole cafeteria, and apparently the hallways too.

Her sigh of relief didn't last long, though, when she felt something hit her back and start to drip down her shirt. She dropped her own tray, in shock, mayonnaise covered bread landing on her feet. "Shit!" she yelled, scrunching her shoulders up as if it would stop whatever was running down her back from stopping. She turned to face the culprit, anger in her eyes. "Watch where the hell you're going, idiot!" she snapped, clearly not any more forgiving due to the lack of light.

Oh…the lights went out. That was why he couldn’t see anything. If only he realized sooner then he would have stopped the moment the darkness came. But Nao was always a fairly slow thinker. And he was a fast mover, especially in the lunch line. Most of what he did was automatic, muscle memory, so stopping in the middle of his routine often required preparing yet another thought.

The girl who yelled was justified in being upset, so he did not see the point in arguing. He merely nodded, despite there being no light to see. “Excuse me,” he said softly.

Nao backed away from the girl and looked around the lunchroom. “It’s dark,” he commented. “Do you think the light’s will come back on soon?” He hoped so. Nao preferred to be able to see his meal as he consumed it.

"No shit it's dark," Marley muttered, brushing some lettuce of her pants, increasingly annoyed by whoever it was that practically ran her down. He seemed almost 3 seconds behind everything else that was happening.

She looked up toward the ceiling, half expecting the lights to flicker back on, but when then didn't she groaned. "Guess not," she muttered, instinctively going to smooth out her normally static-plagued hair, only to notice that her locks were no longer standing on end. It was then she realized just how tired she had begun to feel - her body being used to relying on the electric energy around her instead of creating its own since being at Hammel. "It better come back on soon," she said, slightly angry now.

She could still feel the energy flowing inside her, but it was dropping rapidly, and the high energy she usually had was mellowing out, and she was quickly becoming sleepy. She yawned heartily, and became slightly weak at the knees, tripping over herself and accidentally grabbing the arm of the guy behind her to catch herself. "Sorry," she muttered, putting herself upright again.

What should he do now? Nao looked around the dark room, seeing a lot of people start to pull out their cell phones to use those for illumination. Ah, how smart. Nao had a phone, he could do that too and then maybe reorient himself. Naozumi set his food tray on the lunch line counters beside him(he remembered that was there at least) and pulled out his cell phone, poking away at the screen to activate the flashlight app.

However, it was about this time that the girl in front of him stumbled into him, causing Nao to drop his cell phone. It fell with a crack…and a the sound of little glass pieces scattering. He would have noticed that if the girl wasn’t still fallen on the short boy. “Are you okay?” he asked, holding onto her arm with his free hand. The light from his cell phone’s camera was still shining upward. She looked….sick? “Do you need to sit down?” He should probably move her to one of the tables, if she was willing to follow. Nao gently started to guide her away from the lunch line.
