Helping hand (Phoenix)

[Madison Davis]

Madison was super excited for her first day volunteering at the pet shop. Since she never took up any Hammel clubs while she was here she thought what a better way to fill up her free time then to volunteer. She was a people and animal person so automatically volunteering at a pet shop was a good fit for her. She loved the fact she could help both people and animals alike so much that she didn't even think about asking for pay. She was just glad she could be with animals all day and help find them loving homes. After the girl had always been one to take in stray animals like her dog Nevada and her cat Picasso. She always loved them like they were family. 

When she arrived she remember the manger told her before that she was going to be shadowing some boy till she learn the ropes. She also remembered him mentioning the boy was a student at Hammel to. Madison couldn't recall the his name but she wondered if she knew or saw him around. Hopefully he was nice and they could be great friends! She grabbed her small digital camera out of her backpack and snapped a couple pictures of the place before heading up to the counter. Their was no one in the front of the store. "Excuse me anyone here" she called out. "I'm Madison your new volunteer".

Phoenix's boss had let him know they would be having a volunteer working in the shop today. A volunteer! He was told she went to Hammel too, so Phen had to wonder if maybe they already knew each other. Her name was Madison, or something, he remembered. He was looking forward to showing the girl how things worked, but also nervous - even though he'd been working at the shop for a couple months now, he still felt like he had things to learn, but apparently his boss thought he was doing well so far. Maybe a raise would come from this!

He was grabbing some supplies from the back of the store when he heard the ring of the front door signaling a customer. Phoenix was already heading out to greet whoever it was when he heard the person announce who she was, and a small thrill went through his chest. "Hello!" he chirped with a bright smile as he slid in behind the counter. "M... Madison, right? I, um, I'm supposed t'show you around today, I was told." He offered a hand out to the young girl, thinking she did look sort of familiar. "I'm, uh, I'm Phoenix. You... You go t'Hammel, right?"

Madison smiled braces and all and her eye went bright when she saw the boy. "In the flesh " she replied cheerfully. Her lucky charm bracelet jiggled as she shook Phoenix hand. "And that's what I been told to. It's a pleasure to meet you Phoenix". Phoenix... why did his name sound familiar to the girl? Why did he look familiar for that matter? Maybe she passed him in the hallway or something. "You can call me Maddie. All my friends do and soon we should be friends anyway". She bounced and forth between two feet as she talked not being able to keep still. Her excitement brought about a lot of energy in the cheerful blond. "Yes sir-re-bob I do. I only been a Junior there sense December so I haven't been around for long. The boss man tells me you go to Hammel to. Plus I feel like I seen your adorable face before" she said complimenting him without really thinking about it. "What are you a Junior or Sophomore"? The boy looked really young to Madison.

Phoenix's handshake was weak, but he was still smiling at the girl, feeling timid despite the fact that she was younger than him. "It's really nice of you t'volunteer here," he told her. "Are you hopin' t'work here soon, or...?" He knew his boss had been thinking about hiring a couple more people, since business had been doing pretty well lately. "Maddie," he repeated with another grin. "I... I like making friends." And anyone that liked animals was great in his book. "Oh, wow, not very long, then," he mused. "I-I think I've seen you somewhere, or something, though..." He could have sworn he'd heard her name mentioned. Maybe Oriel... Hmm.... "O-oh," he blushed at the compliment, looking down modestly. "Thanks, um... I'm actually, uh, I mean I should have been a senior last year, but, um, my training and grades held me back," he admitted. He knew he looked younger than being almost nineteen, so he wasn't offended.

"A-anyway, um, I can show you around first?" he suggested, stepping out from behind the counter. "I mean, it's not that big and all, but it's kinda good t'know where everything is."

"Hm I never really thought about actually paid to work here. I just love helping animals and people so much that I guess I didn't think about it. Getting paid to work here would make it more awesome though. I could always use more money to support my sugar habit". Also could use the money for more art supplies but she would just give the rest away or spend it on others. "If I don't get a hold on my illusions by the end of senior year I might be doing some extra time myself".

"Be my guest or in this case be my tour guide. You lead i'll follow".

"It's a fun place to work," Phoenix told her with a faint smile. "All the puppies and kittens and birdies and everything... They're easier t'work with than people, most of the time." Phen had never interacted well with people, especially adults, so he was growing a lot by being put in a place where he had to perform customer service. He giggled a little. "Yeah.... A good portion of my income goes t'buyin' my boyfriend danishes," he admitted. Oriel was a fiend for the pastries; Phoenix doubted he'd ever get tired of them. "Oh, yeah... I'm, um, I'm graduatin' this year, but I have t'stay around for more training," he explained. He didn't mind - it just meant he could procrastinate on finding his own place for another year.

"Alright!" he chirped, leading Madison back towards were the larger, furry creatures were. "Here are the kittens and puppies, and the stuff for them," he explained, motioning to the shelves of food, leashes, toys, etc. "They're really friendly," he added, giggling as he stuck his finger into one of the kitten cages. A fuzzy orange one batted at the 'toy'.

"Oh, my jeebus they are too cute. Can I just keep them all to myself"? That when she spotted a small fuzzy orange kitty and before she even notice what she was doing the cage was unlock and the cat was purring in her arms. "Aw especially this little guy. He so adorable".
