Changed out of her work overalls into street clothes, Josie looked much more like a student a regular student with a duffel bag slung over her shoulder than a grown woman who'd been scrubbing and mopping all day. The only signs left of the work she'd done were the red bandana holding her hair back from her face and the tired slouch in her posture. It had been a long day; on top of her usual workload, some idiot teenager who fancied himself a comedian had followed her into a bathroom and pester her while she was trying to get shit done. On the plus side, today her shift ended before the sun went down - usually Josie preferred the night shift, but she was ready for a drink.
There was no shame in manual work, she told herself as she trudged down the hallway. Someone had to do it, she needed to collect a paycheck, it worked out. But being hassled by that kid had her thinking again about how long it would. Josie could handle kids being rude little turds - she'd been one herself, and she'd had time to develop a thick skin - but it would be nice if she didn't have to.
It was this thought that caused her to pause as she passed the entrance to the school library on her way to the exit. The lights were still on, and she could see a few people inside, so it must still have been open. Every other day she'd walked right on by, confident that there was nothing for her in there. Today, though... Josie thought of the Greenview Community College pamphlet lying on a table at home. Secondary education sounded daunting, but since moving out after the split with Cal the possibility had been on her mind more and more.
Well, if she was going to try college, she would have to get better at studying first. Resigned, Josie pushed the door open and headed inside.
Unsure where to start, she traipsed past shelf after shelf until she ran across one bearing a sign that read "Mystery". She liked mysteries on TV, maybe these books wouldn't be so bad. Down the aisle, Josie peered over title after title until she found one with a title that wasn't too vague to be attention-getting. Already itching to leave, she grabbed it and headed up to the front.
"Is this one any good?" she asked the man at the desk, holding the book up for him to see. Might as well get a review, if he'd read it.
