Spiraling Smoke (Dem)

It wasn't too easy to get away from Hammel, especially when it seemed like a prison, but Thane managed and would continue to unless he had his off-campus priviledges taken away, which he knew was possible for his less than great track record in school, both in academics and in behavior. It was only a matter of time...

And so he was enjoying himself, back in the secluded woods that framed the lake in Pilot Ridge, leaning up against a tree trunk and smoking a cigarette. Smoke spiraled into the air, wrapping around tree branches before it extended up into the sky. He'd even brought some weed with him and after seeing that the woods weren't visited by any other people at the moment, he kind of wanted to light that up as well.

Sometimes he just needed to get away from Hammel, from his roommates, from not being able to have a cigarette.

Demetrius couldn't stay at Hammel any longer. It felt like the walls were slowly crushing him, and the air was getting too thick to breath in anymore. But there was no where he could go. No one he could run to that could offer him help or entertainment or company. Sure, usually he'd have Mathis to fill this category. But his friend was so popular and seemed to have more important things to do than hang around his mean, violent buddy from middle school. These were the sorts of things he'd never speak about, though. Loneliness wasn't something someone should feel when they purposefully shove away anyone that came near.

So Demetrius was left with wandering around Pilot Ridge, growing more and more unhappy that his phone refused to go off and that he had NO ONE he could talk to. Granted, everyone was untrustworthy. They just wanted to use him and abuse him and he wouldn't put it past some of the kids he saw around Hammel to decide to stab him or something. But maybe he should have tried remaining in contact with one or two of them, just to have someone he could talk to. That wasn't so busy it made Demetrius question how the person could stay up right, let alone function.

Eventually green eyes focused on his surroundings rather than his inner debate and the winged boy realized he wasn't sure where he was. Obviously he was still in Pilot Ridge (though how it was obvious, he wasn't going to question). But the specifics confused him. Demetrius didn't remember there being woods when Matty explained all the places to go. Bandaged fingers reach out to touch bark as he fought down a swell of anxiety. It would be useless to panic right now, so instead he shoved the heavy bag further on his shoulder and continued walking in his original direction. After a few minutes he cleared the trees and realized he was surrounded by people. Well, surrounded was an overstatement but true all the same. Demetrius studied the people for a few moments before turning tail and walking back to the trees, not willing to stay in fear of becoming desperate enough he'd actually talk to someone.

He smelled the smoke long before he saw the person. Demetrius frowned some when he stumbled on the person smoking -he wished he could do that, but no one would buy him cigarettes and he didn't know any dealers here- before deciding here was as good as any place to sit down and read. So the boy did just that. He plopped down at the base of a tree across from the stranger, needing to keep an eye on him, before pulling out his leather bound book of Shakespeare and phone to send Mathis a quick text so the mimic could figure out where he was.

Thane wasn't quite old enough to buy cigarettes, several more months and he would be, but he had his ways, even if he wasn't willing to share them. He didn't know what he'd do without the cigarettes. It wasn't as if smoking at a young age was unheard of though, so it was easy to usually find a way around it.

He dug deep in his pocket for his shitty mp3 player and was about to lift his headphones from around his neck to put them around his ears when someone else entered the woods. The guy said nothing, but sat down against a nearby tree with a book. Why the hell couldn't the guy go to a different part of the forest? Why did he have to sit just across the way? "You know, there's a whole fuckin' forest here," he said, blowing smoke. "So I don't know why you're reading your book here." Or why he wanted to.

Demetrius on the other hand had a much tougher time getting his hands on cigarettes. No one wanted to sell to a barely fifteen year old kid and they sure as hell didn't want to help out a kid that was just going to bitch at them. So while he enjoyed smoking, cigarettes and other less wholesome substances, he wasn't able to that often.

Green eyes flicked up from Mercutio's death scene long enough to stare at the male across from him. The words didn't really faze him. Well, okay, maybe they did a little bit. But it's not like he didn't say worse things. Still, Demetrius scoffed slightly and gave Thane a small smirk. "As good'a place as any. Don't see your fuckin' name written on it." Not that he'd know. The guy's name could be written somewhere around here. "Learn to fuckin' deal. Or don't. I couldn't care either way." With the he turned a thick page with his bandaged, stiff fingers and returned to his book.

Seriously? The guy was that typical emo kid who thought he was being mean, but who hadn't used that line? 'I don't see your name written on it.' Thane lost any respect he would have for the guy's similar attitude just from that line alone. Plus, he had the whole black hair going on. Thane found himself wondering if that was the natural color or not. "I'll fuckin' carve my name in a tree if it gets you to leave," he shot back, squinting at the cover of the book the guy was reading. Shakespeare? Who the fuck was this guy?

Demetrius would probably be insulted if he knew the other didn't find him insulting, or worthy of any respect. Then he would just remember he didn't actually care about that, people are pricks, he can use cliches if he damn well pleases, and he can always call ignorance of age. Plus the line, well overused, was adequate enough that Dem saw nothing wrong with it. Which might have been a problem in and of itself.

He let out a soft noise, pretending to think over the stranger's request as though it had merit. Green eyes never once looking up from the book as he returned to what he would consider a comedy if only for the over embellished 'drama'. "Huh," he said finally, still not looking up, "Thought 'bout it... And I don't give a flyin' rats ass. So go carve your name if y'wanna. Still not gunna leave." There. That was nice enough. Perhaps not his nicest, but Dem was beginning to think he couldn't possibly become other people's version of nice.

Thane removed a pocket knife from the pocket of his jeans and flicked the blade open, casually turning towards the tree, one hand holding the knife, the other holding his cigarette. He began to carefully carve his name into the tree. "Gotta make sure it's readable, you know, for people like you," he said, eyes squnited in mock concentration. After all, he didn't really care. The guy wasn't even looking at him, he was just trying to get a rise from him.

"What the fuck are you reading anyway?" he asked as he moved the blade.

A minute shiver of fear went through Dem's body when he heard the blade flick open. But he quickly suppressed it. It was irrational to be afraid of a guy who was probably just going to carve his body instead of a tree. However his fear was put to rest when the sound of metal biting into wood drifted over. His green eyes focused on the text one more, still not giving the other the satisfaction of paying attention to him. "Make sure ta use small words, wouldn't want your brain to implode from trying ta think of things." He responded easily, casually moving so that one leg rested over the other.

Finally green eyes flicked up from the creamy pages to focus on the tree carving boy. "Oh, sorry. Did y'not know how to read?" Dem grinned some before holding up the book so the cover was visible. "Shakespeare." He explained slowly, letting the book fall back into his lap. "Readin' the ever funny Romeo 'n Juliet."

"Well, my name isn't that long and I've been spelling it my whole life," Thane pointed out with a scowl as he continued to carve with mock precision into the tree, finishing the 'h' and moving onto the 'a.'

"No, I just don't fuckin' care to," he replied with a shrug of his shoulders, still not taking his eyes off of the tree. "Funny? Isn't that supposed to be tragic? You really are a sick motherfucker, aren't you?"

"I maintain m'earlier statement." Demetrius couldn't stop the smirk from pulling at his lips. Green eyes flicked up briefly from the text to watch the rather attractive hand- Demetrius paused before ducking his head back to the book. No. He did not even start to think of a male as attractive, not one he just met in any case. The small devil in his head reminding him of his meeting with Greg wasn't helping things, though.

Demetrius remained wrapped up in his text and his thoughts of how not attractive Thane was with the blade in his hands. He's probably right... Just a sick motherfucker. He thought to himself before finally snorting and starting to speak. "They were fourteen, it was their first love and ain't even take a week before they go and off themselves taking 'bout... four others with them. Over what? Some chick? It's a comedy, not a tragedy. A tragedy is when real love dies, ain't 'bout lust."

Thane was becoming increasingly annoyed at the young individual sitting across from him by a tree.

"No shit," he mumbled quietly to the voice in his head, still failing often at only thinking these things. Sometimes the things the voice said were accurate and sometimes Thane cursed at the voice for saying things that weren't.

He decided to ignore the comment and instead continued carving his name into the tree, starting the 'n.' "Sounds like you've read this way too many times." Thane was willing to bet he actually enjoyed it. "What, does the lust get you all hot and heavy?"

Demetrius would have raised an eyebrow at Thane's mumbled comment, had he heard it. However Dem was currently drowning in his own thoughts. Trying to command himself he was not actually seeing a wolf disguised as a boy. Vowing that he would stop reading romantic fantasy books for the time being, if thinking things like that was the result. Green eyes flicked up briefly to look at the other boy, smirking ever gently at the flicker of silver.

"Some people defile nature in their time, I read." And pick fights. But the stranger didn't need to know that. His leg slid up slowly until he could prop up the book and still read it without straining his neck. "Ain't lust somethin' that gets everyone hot 'n heavy?" Demetrius smirked again before turning the page to the book. "But naw. Too much female for me ta enjoy, if y'get m'meaning."
