What Does the Dark Hide? (Tempest)

Kingston needed a change in scenery. He needed to get out of his dorm, so he went to the library. The library wasn’t overly crowded. Quiet conversation could be heard here and there. Not too many people were in the library but just enough so Kingston didn’t feel alone.

Kingston wasn’t big on books. He much rather be with a computer than a book. He walked up and down the aisles of books. Kingston ended up finding books about computers.

He took a book off the shelf. A book couldn’t hurt. Kingston took the book and sat at a table in the back corner of the library.

Tempest smiled as he walked into the nicely air conditioned library out of the horrible heat of the sun the beat down upon him. A light sigh and he was off to see what kind of book he wished to read today. There were many things he could pick and honestly he didn't mind much of anything but enjoyed fantasy novels. Such as J R R Tolken books and Terry Pratchett works. He took 'The Hobbit' Down from the book shelf for the 7th or 8th time and then went to find a place to sit. Where he normally liked had too many people but he still liked the little corner area's. To preserve some of the older books on powers there weren't many windows and they mostly relied on the ceiling electronic lights to see. He smiled and then sat next to a.. Well he was a pretty boy much like himself. He seemed to be deep into his book though.

Opening his he delved into the adventurous tale he loved to read over and over. However after about a half hour his reading was disrupted when the lights suddenly went out. There was probably some kind of overheating going on. But it also meant that the AC went off. So not only was it dark but it was going to get very hot.

For a technopath to get absorbed into a book was pretty impressive. Kingston was rather enjoying his reading. He wasn’t much of a reader, but this book was interesting. Kingston was so absorbed into the computer book that he didn’t noticed that a young male came to sit and read.

It wasn’t until the lights went out, did Kingston’s attention left the book.

Kingston’s brown eyes got wide as he looked around the in the dark. He did not like this. The dark was not a good thing. Things hided in the dark, waiting. Kingston’s heart began to pick up speed when the lights did not turn back on. Not good. Not good.

Was this because a technopath was reading a book? Kingston thought reading a book wasn’t going to hurt anything. But now there were no lights. If Kingston gets out of this alive, he will vow to never read a book again.

“I’m sorry,” Kingston closed the book and pushed it away from him.

Tempest frowned and sighed a little and before blinking. "Sorry?" he asked and then smiled a bit. "I.. It wasn't your fault.." He said and then frowned a little. "I wouldn't move around though.. It's almost pitch black in here." He commented and then smiled holding his hand out. "I'm Tempest you must be the boy who was at the table earlier..." he began and then frowned putting his hand down the guy probably couldn't see it. "Well.. You do have to be the guy from earlier but.. You most probably are.." he said and then looked around again trying to see something. He shook his head. "I'm not a big fan of the dark.." He said before frowning. "Have the AC's turned off?" he asked and then sighed wiping his forehead a little already feeling fairly clammy.

"Oh yeah, what's your name? And.. Why is this your fault? Do you have a power of randomly turning off lights?" He blinked a little bit and then remember. He took a keyring from his keys and pressed the button. There was a small light.

Kingston jumped at the sound of Tempest’s voice. Kingston relaxed at the sound of a friendly voice and knowing that he wasn’t alone in the dark. He tried to look through the dark to see the face of the person he was talking to. Kingston heard keys clacking together. A little flashlight was turned on. Kingston smiled at the sight of light.

“Um, Kingston. And, um, I don’t like the dark too.” He paused, not wanting to embarrass him self. He dropped his eyes to the table. “Don’t laugh, but I’m a technopath and I was reading a book.” Kingston’s voice got quieter as he spoke.

Being a technopath Kingston has a certain pride. Technopaths are supposed to be found in a computer lab, not the library reading a book. It likes a technopath would never ask for computer help. People come to them for computer help. Kingston didn’t dare to look up from the table.

“Um, wh-what is your power?" Kingston whispered, wanting to get the conversation off of him.

Tempest smiled a little and then frowned a little before nodding. "Yeah.. I like shaded areas and hate the heat from the sun but I like the light it gives." He said before blinking. "Well.. Why would I laugh? What's wrong with that? It's like saying a person really into movies can't watch television shows once in a while." he shook his head lightly before smiling a little more. "So don't be embarrassed about it." He said before frowning. "Me? I.. Have Pyrokenesis.. But I can't produce fire from thin air which was good since when I was younger I didn't have much of a grasp on it." He said before looking down. "But I guess no one can control their powers at first." He shrugged. With a pause he paced the little torch on the table between them and stood it upwards so that they cold kind of see each other a bit. "So, I'm Tempest.. it's nice to meet you." He smiled again and waited for the other boy to introduce himself.

The corners of Kingston’s mouth lifted up a little when Tempest said there was nothing to be embarrassed about. Embarrassed. That was what Kingston was feeling. He filed away what he was feeling and the word ‘embarrassed’ together in his mind. Hopefully Kingston would remember what the emotion embarrassed felt like in the future.

Kingston whipped his head around. He looked around the darkness. Nothing was there. When Kingston was a little kid, it made sense that he was afraid of the dark. Even now the dark still freaked Kingston out, even at the age sixteen.

He turned back to the table. He scooted his chair closer to the table, and the light, and Tempest.

“I’m Kingston Carmichael,” he finally looked up at Tempest. Tempest definitely has a cute face. “Uh, I wasn’t good with my power. I used to short-circuit computers a lot. Still do sometimes.”

Tempest smiled and then nodded a little. "I'm glad to meet you." He said before nodding lightly. "Well.. I depends for me.. If fire is around it's best not to have me angry since I could loose control.. But it hasn't happened yet. Also I can't produce fire so on my own I'm pretty much harmless." He chuckled lightly before frowning. "Well there is no shame in that.. And I don't know what goes into computer thingy...ing... But it seems like it's a normal thing." He said before looking around and yawning a little. "Ugh.. It's hot." He said and let himself half lay on the table his upper body and head on the table. "I dislike the heat so much." he said and then closed his eyes a little. "I wonder if I could get away with taking my shirt off." he murmured. It was dark and no one would see his back.. Unless they lights suddenly turned on. No.. it wasn't worth it.

So what now? Kingston was sitting in the dark and his nerves where twitching. The AC stopped working and Kingston could feel the heat getting to him. He wiped his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt. He then rolled up his sleeves and unbuttoned the top two buttons on his shirt. And there was a cute boy starting to fall asleep.

All Kingston wanted to do was to get out of the dark and the heat. He shifted in his chair. He didn’t know what to do. Kingston could feel his eyelids wanting to close due to the heat.

“Tempest,” Kingston whispered, “are you awake?”

Tempest sighed a little, his elevated body temperature wasn't helping anything. He nodded. "I'm awake.. Hey wanna try get out.. It's really stuffy now.." He said and sighed a little bit. "If I get too hot it could be bad since I already have hotter than other people.. and I mean that in a literal sense not in the sense that I'm pretty.." He said before yawning a little more and sighing sitting up and running a hand through his hair. He had a thought and then reached for his bag opening it and taking a bottle of water out. He sipped some and then passed the rest to kingston. "Here have some it's water" he said.

“Thank you,” Kingston took the water from Tempest. He took a sip. “Getting out of here sounds good.” Kingston really liked the idea of getting out of the dark and the heat.

Kingston looked around in the dark again, which again it was pointless. He still couldn’t see anything. How hard could it be for two boys to get out of the library in the dark? The worst thing that Kingston could think of was walking into something.

He handed the water back to Tempest. “Where would we go?”

Tempest smiled at Kingston and nodded a bit lightly pouting and then looking around thinking trying to remember the way and where they were in the library. He smiled a little and then blinked a bit. "Hum.... I'm not all too sure where the exit is... We, could start looking though." He suggested with a rather happy little smile. "We might get lost but we have a flash light it should be fine since there are signs around..." He paused. "I think.." He chuckled a little more and frowned. "Strange what's important to know that you took for granted before huh..."

Tempest had a good point. Where was the exit? Kingston didn’t come to the library much, so he didn’t know the way. And on top of that he didn’t know the layout of library either. It was going to be very easy for both boys to walk into something. On a good note they did have a little flashlight. The flashlight would help some.

“I’m not familiar with the library. I’m not going to be much help.”
