The BasicsName: Alanna Lorelle Darlington
Nicknames: Al
Age: 16
Orientation: Bisexual
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers: Telepathy - What began as whispers soon grew to a constant clamor. Her time at Hammel has helped her learn to control this somewhat, though it is still something she struggles with. She is very dedicated and motivated to learn to control her power. That is a very challenging task however, given the nature of her power. Her control is greatly affected by her emotions, and weakens the more emotional she is. Likewise though, a thought with stronger emotion is more likely to break through her mental barriers against her will.
After two years of training, she is able to block out the worst of the chatter, but still has difficulty blocking it out completely, particularly in crowds. The more people are around her the more easily distracted she becomes. At times she is unable to differentiate between thoughts and speech and has been known to reply to others thoughts as though they were spoken aloud. She also suffers frequent migraines because of her power. The closer she is to an individual the louder their thoughts are to her and this can be even more amplified if she is touching the individual. Physical boundaries such as walls help quiet the thoughts of others, though are by no means absolute.
As a result of her power, she tends to keep to herself and avoid others more often than not. However, in the instances she purposefully uses her power, her range can be extended. Accuracy becomes more strained the greater the distance, though the better acquainted she is with the individual the better the odds of success are. Her general range is approximately 30 feet while her extended concentrated range is approximately 50 feet.

General Appearance:
Despite her wallflower personality, Alanna's appearance tends to draw the eye. This is largely in part due to the contrast between her dark hair and pale skin tone and only further enhanced by her features. She has large wide eyes that are a shade somewhere between blue and green depending on the light. Alanna has very prominent cheekbones, especially when she smiles. Though her smiles are rather rare given how withdrawn she is, she does have a bright, beautiful smile.
Perhaps one of her best features though is her thick wavy hair. It is a rich dark brown color that shines in the light. She wears it long and nearly always loose in either soft waves or true curls. Alanna was a late bloomer and as such it is little surprise that her figure is made up of subtle curves. In fact, her figure is rather straight with only a slight swell at her bust. She is quite petite, standing at only 5'2" and having an overall thin frame.
Alanna's sense of style is best described as eclectic. Rather than a true style that is easily defined, she has more a personal taste. She wears what she likes and it is as simple as that. As a result, her wardrobe has a great deal of variance and can see her wearing a soft feminine dress one day and a dark edgy outfit the next. Her wardrobe has very little consistency really. One constant though is a favorite black leather jacket.
Personality:
The first and most noticeable aspect of Alanna's personality is that she is very much an introvert. This is even more exaggerated by the impact of her life experiences and the side effects of her power which has caused her to withdraw even more, becoming a bit of a wallflower. Her power causes her to avoid crowds whenever possible, or at least keep her distance. Because of this she is usually wearing headphones and listening to her music just a little too loud if she's not in class. She relies on that barrier to hold herself at a distance from people and the literal headaches and heartaches they bring her. Even before the development of her power, she struggled with socializing. She was always a touch awkward with people which made making friends an agonizing process that seldom ended in her favor.
Despite this, Alanna has a strong desire to connect with others - something she is loathe to admit even to herself. She wants to be strong and independent - to believe her solitude is her choice. Yet the truth of the matter is that she has always longed for friends. She learned to be content without them, but she knows that isn't quite the same. She is a sweet girl - the sort who is (and has been) easily taken advantage of by others. Yet somehow, much as she fears reaching out, she still is determined to see the good in people, even if a part of her struggles to believe it exists beneath all the bad she sees and hears.
Alanna has always had an independent nature. This means that she has a very hard time asking for help. Likewise, she is a bit of a perfectionist in the worst way. It prevents her from admitting to any perceived weakness - even basic emotions such as fear or sorrow - and always projecting a strong front no matter the truth of the matter. This also means that she is easily overwhelmed at times because of her tendency to bottle her emotions so strongly.
While she does little to defend herself, she is quick to defend others and does so with a fiery temper. If it is someone she cares about, then this effect is intensified. She is slow to let people in, but once she does she cares deeply. She is also more than a little bit stubborn and can certainly hold her ground on principle. However obstinate she can be with her peers though, she is completely compliant in regards to authority figures and regards them with a deep respect.
She is extremely open minded about most things and is fairly accepting. Likewise she is very reasonable and very much believes in looking at the full picture or both sides of a story. She tries to always be fair which is something that is very important to her - especially since she is able to experience first hand how quickly the masses can pass judgement.
Alanna is an artist at heart. Her first love was music and singing. It has always been a huge part of who she is, though she has seldom sang in her time at Hammel - ever since the talent show debacle when her powers manifested - and even then only when she is certain that there is no one else to hear. Since coming to Hammel though she has discovered another creative outlet - photography. For her, photography gives her a chance to interact with the world while remaining an observer. Its a shield to protect her while allowing her to express her own views and voice nonetheless. Her passion and dedication to this art has allowed her to excel at it in these past two years. She has a great deal of raw talent and is still learning and experimenting every day.Your VicesLikes: singing, music, photography, reading, chocolate, flowers, stargazing, the color violet, lemons, salsa and mexican food

Any Other Important People: Cat named ApolloHistoryAlanna was born to a very average middle class family in the south. She was born and raised in Tennessee until the age of 7 when her family then moved to Pennsylvania. Her accent marked her as an outsider from the start and though she was tolerated, she was never truly accepted by her classmates. They would tease her and tell her that she was stupid because she couldn't pronounce her words right. As she got older her accent lessened but still she was not included. She had always enjoyed reading though and now she took solace in her books. She was always the sort to keep to herself and so her parents never really knew the extent of her exclusion and the bullying.
It only worsened as she got older but by then she had adjusted somewhat. While their words still bothered her, she was better able to ignore them and simply go about her business. She was a very individual sort of person and as such she often got stares. She knew they talked about her behind her back, but it was easy enough to pretend she didn't know.
But as they transitioned through middle school, Alanna became a target again. She was a late bloomer which meant she fell behind the other girls in terms of development and soon they began to single her out, calling her a baby and other such names. Another thing that set her apart was her developing sense of style. While the other girls cared about designer labels, Alanna was the girl rummaging through the racks at the thrift store. Nonetheless, it only incurred more teasing. Alanna was far too stubborn to conform though, and instead tolerated the taunts.
It was in her freshman year of high school that things began to change. Puberty finally caught up with Alanna and for a time she really thought that would change things at school. Her parents knew she didn't have many friends, but they attributed this more to shyness than bullying, and she was careful to never correct them on the matter. Still, they were able to talk her into signing up for the school's talent show. She had a good voice but had always been reluctant to perform, however with the encouragement of her parents she decided to try. She practiced hard and even still found herself tremendously nervous as she stood backstage.
In the end it was that anxiety that proved to be her undoing, for it caused her power to manifest as she stepped on the stage. In retrospect, whispers had existed in her mind for a week now, but she had always attributed them to her insecurities. Yet there were no whispers as she stepped on the stage. Instead it was a deafening roar of snide remarks, slurs and demands for her to spare them the agony of her performance. Before she ever sang, she bolted from the stage in tears.
What she didn't understand initially was that the crowd had not booed her - she had heard their thoughts. It wasn't until her parents expressed their concerns about her strange behavior that she began to understand they had somehow not heard all the cruel words that she had. She secluded herself in her room after that and a week later recruiters from Hammel showed up. She was eager to get away from here and even more so to be able to control her ability. In many ways she loathes it, for she has heard so many things she wished she could be ignorant of. She embarrassed easily though - especially whens she mistook thoughts for speech - and so she began trying to escape notice and fade into the background, fighting to push all the thoughts aside. She began very withdrawn, avoiding crowds and people in general whenever possible.
Two years have passed since she came to Hammel and though her control over her ability has grown considerably, she still remains withdrawn, afraid to trust her control. She is content to depend on her story books for company and to interact with people from the safety of hiding behind a camera lens.Roleplay ExampleI've had two characters in play on Hammel previously a long time ago (see Aurora Snyder and Ariana Cypher) but if you need something more let me know! What About You?Name: Faraday, Fara or Sara, your choice
