The BasicsName: Ross Ignus Valkyrie
Nicknames: Val
Age: 17
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers:
- Alchemy
Ability to transmute metal from one element to another. This ability is limited to naturally-occurring elements. Side-effects could include fatigue, particularly when transmuting anything into gold.
Limitations:
- Equivalent Exchange - The basic law of Alchemy of which nothing is gained without something of equal value being lost. This means metal of lesser value than, say, silver will lose mass when turned to silver.
- Effectiveness depends on the user's knowledge and skill.
- Transmutations are not instant and take several seconds longer for increasing size.
Side-Effects:
- Lethargia and exhaustion that scales with size of transmutation, eventually leading to nausea (around filing cabinet size), spasms, seizures and unconsciousness. These effects stack, as in doing a task in several fast transmutations has the same detriment as doing it in one. Interrupted transmutation can lead to a random combination of elements (not necessarily metal) being produced rather than the desired metal.
Play By: Jonathan BennettThe DetailsHair Color: Dark Brown
Eye Color: Roughly purple, more blue so can pass for non-meta.
Any Scars? Small jagged scar just above right hip
General Appearance: Ross has an almost fox-like look about him that can be seen in his physical appearance as well as the way he moves. The Alchemist's facial features are sharp and poised, with analytic, almost purple eyes, a tight-lipped mouth, and a curved jaw. His hair is almost chocolate brown, but seems darker in different lights, as does his eyes.
He’s tall and lanky, standing about 6’ and weighing in around 10 stone. Ross's long, lightly muscled limbs make him naturally fast, though not particularly strong versus more stocky figures. He has an old scar just above his right hip, a jagged white line about as wide as your little finger.
On average, he’s almost always found with a contemplating, neutral expression, though he smiles whenever he feels compelled to. General apparel is black, blue or red. Mostly seen with a hoodie, he seems like an average teenager. Pockets jangle with metallic sounds when he moves.
Personality: Ross is a friend magnet. He almost always graces those he greets with a smile and a warm welcome, instinctively and subconsciously trying to win them over. Gifts are given regularly to close friends. Shady at times, skipping over childhood memories and discussions on powers, but is mostly friendly.
He often appears to be in deep thought or contemplation, usually due to his ability to sense the rough location and type of metal nearby causing his analytical side to wonder which metal would best replace the existing one.
A large part of his life (the majority, really) is given to science and tinkering. Ross tends to have a pocket full of cogs or circuit boards. The student often pulls out components such as these and attempts to make a creation befitting the surroundings and situation he is in. Carries a small lead canister of oil in his pocket wherever he goes - for carrying slightly more potent substances.
On the negative side, Ross tends to mess with and even on occasion steal people's property. In his heart he is just trying to make the items higher quality, but when one of your grandmother's brooches is stolen and returned in a tampered state you get mad. Sometimes the Alchemist can scare off those who are slightly more timid or offend the aggressive with his naturally open manner.
The openness and generosity of the boy is the result of a promise he made to himself when he moved to Hammel. No more being alone - make close friends and be nice to people. It's his defense to becoming bullied again. That and DO NOT tell them what you can do - the nature of men is to take advantage for personal gain..
The Alchemist doesn't talk about his abilities very much due to his past experience of being exploited for economic gain however people tend to wonder why their pen has suddenly turned into copper when they turn away for a second.Your VicesLikes: Archery, Rain, Animals, Books, Technology, Skill-based sports, excitement, pets (especially birds). Quiet. Tea. Logic. Japanese culture.
Dislikes: Ignorant / arrogant / obnoxious people. Bullies, people who won't help others. Pen chewers. Having nothing to do. Sexism. Over-sexualised media.
Strengths: A good thinker/strategist. Is good at reading people and their feelings. Known for giving good advice. Ceases the initiative when others falter in their confidence, supporting them. Sociable. Can use his power to help others in financial need, but never for his own.
Weaknesses: Challenges teachers when he thinks they're wrong. Holds a grudge for a long time. Never backs down, no matter what the consequences. Can resort to bribery using his power to turn whoever stands against him in dire situations.
Fears: Being exploited once again. Drowning, used to have severe nightmares about drowning under ice. Being trapped and unable to escape.
Secret: Ross has failed apart from on random occasion and despite all efforts to transmute gold. Gold is known to be the hardest of all metals to transmute, due to its extreme purity and value. Ironically, platinum is within range of the 5.9. boy. His scar was actually inflicted due to a massive failed transmutation just as his power began to manifest - see history.Family TiesFather: Ian Valkyrie (40)

Any Other Important People: Has a pet parakeet called Georga. Very docile and can even fly around rooms she is comfortable with. She REALLY enjoys nuts and hates strangers.HistoryRoss was born smack in the North West of England, on December 17th. It was a healthy birth though a couple of days late. His home was a standard terraced house, his family fairly poor compared to others. It was in this spirit that his father tried to make/repair anything he could to save money. Naturally, as soon as Ross was able to understand he was encouraged to do the same. Eventually, he surpassed his father and can make virtually anything out of pieces of junk. This has led to an almost tick of always needing to improve and repair whatever his is alive.
Ross's powers manifested themselves abruptly at a very sensitive time. The experiment every highschooler has done - the old lithium and water trick to show properties of Alkali Metals. However, as he dropped the lithium Ross wondered what the effect of a more reactive Alkali Metal would be.. He found out - the metal tongs he was holding and the lithium strip that itself was holding spontaneously turned into Rubidium. Owch.. The hand-sized chunk of highly reactive metal exploded mid-air and forced Ross off his feet, splintering the desk before him and leaving the boy with a large scar in his side. Ross was 15.
A couple of days after the event, Kocher drafted him at 16 and the boy was told to leave his family. Treated like an outcast due to his habit of tinkering and messing with things, Ross was severely bullied at Kocher. One of his mistakes was broadcasting the fact he could synthesize precious metals. The locals would threaten him until he promised to give them this week's worth of silver and other such metals. Eventually, he receded into himself and had as little interaction with other students as possible - keeping the fact of the bullying a secret. Eventually Ross decided that enough was enough and that he would not be exploited anymore. In a rushed meeting with several staff members, Ross requested to be transferred. He didn't care of the consequences, even if he lost his family. Anywhere but there..
The teachers penalized those who Ross named and he was sent to Hammel as an exchange student at 17. Here begins his life at the Institute.
Ross is a lad that can get things. A gold ring? A sculpted silver statue? A sample of rare alloy? A more complex item like a pocket watch? Something more reactive? He can get it for you but is sure to request something in return. Try not to ask how he got it..Roleplay ExampleHe blinks as the light fades and does a 360 of his surroundings. It seems he has been transported into prehistoric times - with wooden huts and vines everywhere. "Intriguing." he comments as he steps off the gate. He walks to the centre of the settlement and asks an NPC for some information. "Hey, what is this place?" he asks, "This is Amazon, City of the Jungle." explains the NPC. Darkwood looks around once more and realizes a lack of male NPC's in the area. "Wh.. Why are there no men here?" he questions, "Amazon is the seat of the Amazonian Tribe, an all-female tribe." she describes.
"WAAAAAT?! Um.. Excuse me" while others may have thought this was great, Darkwood found it somewhat awkward and had thoughts like 'How can they survive with no reproduction?'. He quickly shuffled away, staff tapping in a fast rhythm.
As he made his move to get away from that unnatural place he spotted a ring of huge, crumbling pillars around the entire settlement. Curious, he moved closer to the pillars before a otherworldly sensation ran through him and he had to touch the pillar, nothing else mattered. He sprinted up to the structure, ignoring the warning cries of the nearby NPC's and planted his hand firmly onto the sigil that was embedded into the pillar. In an instant all matter of unpleasant memories surged through him. That boy he could have saved if he knew how to do alchemy, the man who nearly killed him after pretending to be hurt by the roadside and driving a dagger into Darkwood, the stupid spider that caused him to ruin somebody's wedding. He fell to his knees, palms driving into his temples, "AHHH LEAVE ME ALONE" he screamed as the nearby players and NPC rushed to him before he blacked out.
After waking up with a pounding headache and several Amazons and players gathered around him, Darkwood was frightened and confused. "Wh-What happened to me? he pleaded, You've just experienced the Call of the Haunted, a curse that has been bestowed upon you as you touched the city's holy Idol. the leader replied. As soon as the word Idol was spoken Darkwood blacked out again after experiencing a sudden gigantic pain in his temples. He woke once more several hours later, an NPC waiting for him to rouse. The NPC said "Your only hope to stop these pains is to Calm your Soul.", "What is that? inquired Darkwood. "You must travel to the Folly and confront the demons that plague you., "Sounds simple enough. So.. Which way to this place?"
The Amazons gave Darkwood a basic iron longsword and wished him luck, pointing the way to the Folly. 'God, I just can't get these images out of my head. he slapped himself to try to clear the images but just hurt himself. After several hours of walking and getting lost, Darkwood spotted a huge forest to the right Ah! Here we go! he exclaimed, and plunged headfirst into the dark band of trees that stained the langscape.
Darkwood turns to see a man dressed in white robes, the opposite to his own dark alchemic robes. The man looks startled and nervous, quickly darting out of view. "Hey! HEY!" shouts Darkwood, pursuing the person. With his superior speed - even though it was low for that of a player - he quickly caught and confronted the man. "Hey! What's the deal with you running away like that?" he inquired.
"Y.. You bear the Call of the Haunted."
"Wait, how do you know about that?"
"I am the Sage of the Waterfall, the one given the task of removing the curse from those who have proven their worth."
"Waaait, hold on. So I have to prove my worth? How?"
"By defeating the Guardian of the Falls you have proven yourself to me. Now we can begin the remedy. Follow me.".
Darkwood followed in awe, wondering 'This guy just stood there while I was getting beaten to a pulp? Not much of a Sage to me..'. Soon after they had reached a large pool with a glassy, reflective surface and around the pool there lay egg-shaped slabs of grey rock.
"Can I recover a bit first? That fight was intense.." inquired Darkwood.
"No. Your treatment must be done immediately for you to not bear the curse forever."
"That doesn't sound fair, what if I came out with 1 HP?"
"Those are the rites, I cannot change them."
Darkwood grumbled to himself as they neared the pool. The Sage looked at him expectantly.
"What?" Darkwood asked.
The Sage gestured to the stones. "Choose one." he replied.
Darkwood pointed to a smaller, weathered stone. The Sage nodded approvingly.
"Sit on it." instructed the Sage.
Darkwood obeyed.
As soon as he got settled down on the rock he felt a rush of calmness and he closed his eyes instinctively. He seemed unable to open his eyes as his mind cycled through all his troubles and dispelled them in a systematic way. When there was none left he felt a feeling of inner peace consume him. He felt a wave of relaxation and acceptance washed the anxiety and troubles from him. He gasped and open his eyes, staring him in the face was a huge demon.
A horse-sized demon stood before him. It appeared to be a huge, matt-black skinned giant with huge muscles but the worse part was yet to come. Its head was huge and was composed of many hundreds of faces, some crying out in pain, others grieving while a few laughed maniacally. "OHMYGOD WHATAREYOU" shouted Darkwood in fright. No reply came from the demon, rather it opened a few of its mouths and long, sickly green tongues lashed out. The tongues struck Darkwood in the chest, taking him by surprise. He wheeled over backwards off the rock. What About You?Name: Eth
