Unlike some of the other clubs, the Astronomy group still met during the summer. Because summer was the best time for stargazing. It was warmer, the sky was clearer than in the cooler months, and they didn't have school to worry about the next day that would keep them from staying out late so they could spend the evening looking up at the sky. Sometimes those times were in the early morning. When they weren't meeting outside for such activities, they were in the club office, looking at charts and researching through astronomy books and articles, both old and new. Naozumi liked to keep up with the latest discoveries when he could, but with his new schedule that was proving much harder than it used to be.
Nao hadn't been to a club meeting in a while. School took up a lot of that time during the school year. He also had track meets, though it wasn't required that he attend them because his ability gave him an unfair advantage. More recently, Naozumi had gotten a position as an instructor at the local dojo, teaching his preferred art of aikido. All of these had taken up quite a bit of his spare time, and while he might have been able to attend on some days, when it came to a choice between going to a club meeting or spending an afternoon or evening with Ray, Naozumi was 9 times out of ten going to choose the latter.
The Japanese boy wondered if the other members even remembered that he was a member too? Nao was already so unnoticeable, he wouldn't be surprised. Then again, there weren't many members to begin with, so he could be wrong.
There was no practice today, and Ray had something else he had to do, so Nao supposed that now would be as good a time as any to make an appearance, since if he remembered correctly, there was supposed to be a meeting today. The boy gingerly knocked upon the door to the clubroom before opening it to peer inside, hoping to be met with at least one familiar face. "Hello? Is anyone here?" he called out in his usual hushed voice into the small office. As far as he could tell, it was empty, and that fact weighed heavily on his heart. Did he get the time wrong? Or had membership finally fizzled out to none?
Naozumi stood in the doorway, dazed and wondering if he should stay and wait or leave to find something else to do, as somebody else quietly approached from behind.
