The Details
Hair Color: Dark Brown
Eye Color: Emerald (Get it?)
Any Piercings? Just the ears
Any Tattoos? Small black butterfly on her upper right arm
Any Scars? Nothing of note.
General Appearance: Just a little taller than the average woman, Emerald is 5' 8" (weighing 143 lbs; average frame, spread out evenly across her body). Defintely not tight, her body is that of one who does about ten minutes of exercise before giving up, swearing she'd do better next week. She wears a decently high amount of makeup, mostly to cover up the small blemishes to her skin that were gained from the awkward teenage years. She uses more than is needed, but she likes how it looks. With straight medium-long brown hair that goes to her shoulders, Emerald generally leaves it floating out, only styling it into a bun for a rare important event. Green eyes adorn her mostly soft face.
Dressing comfortably and mostly conservatively, most of Emerald clothes could be described as boring. Cool colors (mostly shades of blue and grey), not very feature hugging outside of when she wears pants, and in general lacking in "up-to-date fashion" feel. Stylistically, she tends to wear a thin blazer over loose shirts that nearly always full cover her cleavage and waist. Sometimes she will wear dresses of various natures/fashions (her one guilty pleasure of clothing), but that isn't often.
Personality:
A genius IQ of 170 is about potential, nothing is guarenteed. For Emerald, that potential is constantly being put to use. Highly inquisitive about the world around her, always wanting to learn more, she is gifted to be able to memorize and parse through large amounts of data with less effort than average. Her favorite time to explore is Ancient Rome & Greece (she floods her students with information on it when it comes up).
Everyday is approached with a smile on her face, namely because Emerald believes that her life is about as perfect as a life can be. This bubbly and exhuberant nature extends to general conversation, happy to talk positively, to the point of avoiding most negative topics whatsoever. Anything that would "dampen the mood" get to Emerald and she will often try raise it again, whether it be appropriate or not. She does do her best to cheer others up.
This child-like excitement can be mistaken by some for a lack of maturity, but that is far from the truth. Emerald had discipline and good values engrained in her by her mother and her grandmother. She has a strong handle on her life and the direction everything is heading. If her life were to get more complicated (in areas she normally felt comfortable), however, she could get very stressed.
Emerald has a hard time relating to difficulties people can face. Innocent in many ways (sometimes approaching ignorant), she manages to be modest, though. Mostly arisen from the need to fit in or not draw too much attention to herself, Emerald rarely comes off as arrogant, though she can be a bit too smart for her own good.
When she discovered alcohol on her 21st birthday, she fell in love with the way it made her feel. She actually feels like she can relate on some emotional level and is more tolerant of sadness mixed with the happiness. Her urges to solve peoples' problems are lessened and she's free to enjoy herself. Between her disciplined nature and non-addictive personality, she keeps from being an alcholic.
Romantically, Emerald falls in love hard and fast. Adorably oblivious of flirting toward her (at least early on), she enjoys to flirt with both men and women, often just conversationally. Emerald tries to make it fun and hopes the other person knows that. Though one-nighters happen with both genders, she prefers having a committed relationship or nothing at all to them. She's really only ever had romantic interest in men despite being bisexual. Emerald has the childhood dream of getting a husband and having kids someday. Still a little wounded from her failed relationship with her ex-fiance Derek Matthews, Emerald often seeks romantic or sexual situations when she shouldn't.

Fears:
Being an Old Maid (Really wants to be married and have kids before she's 40; which is just "oh my god" old)
Becoming an Alcoholic (Doesn't want to stop drinking; but is becoming increasingly aware of amount being consumed; she doesn't want to stop entirely though)
Heights (As simple as it is to rationalize that she won't fall, she hates being aware of being high up)
Meta Problems for Ruby (Worried that she'll be persecuted or otherwise experience hard times because she is a meta)
Secret:
Sold homework in her first few years of college for extra spending money. Immensely regrets it now. Rebellious teenage years.

History
Living in sunny California, George and Abigail Parker were in their early 20s when their first daughter was born. Both having brown eyes, it was a great surprise when she had very bright green eyes. They decided to name her Emerald. George, a computer technician, and Abigail, a rare 80s businesswoman, were both intelligent, so they were hoping (and somewhat expecting) their daughter to be the same.
When they referred to their newborn as their little genius, they didn't realize what that meant. Reading before she was 2, helping her father program at 5, balancing her mother's checkbook faster than her mother at the age of 6, speaking two languages fluently (English and Euro Spanish) from books and cassette tapes by 8, by the time she was 12, she was beginning high school and at 14 she had a degree and was considering college offers, most full-ride. Her IQ was determined to be 170, placing her well into the genius range.
Her childhood was less than normal as a result. From competitions to classes, her parents pushed her. Depsite this, she snuck in time to read fiction. She managed to make friends, even in high school. Her confident and cheery attitude bypassed much of the awkwardness of the average child prodigy. Loving life, Emerald spent as much time outside as she could and loved spending time at the beach with her friends (even if nearly all were 5+ years older).
Having a child genius kept George and Abigail from growing their family at first, but as Emerald became more self-sufficient, they decided to give it a shot, and thus a blue-eyed girl was born in 1995 when Emerald was 9. Keeping with the theme they had started, she was named Sapphire. Emerald was too busy to spend time with her new sister, and her love for her parents was reaching a breaking point.
After an offer from NYU (New York University), where her grandmother (Melissa Parker) lived, she begged her parents and grandmother to go there. Her grandmother, realizing Emerald's need to get away from her constantly driving parents (having never agreed with their choices for raising Emerald herself), agreed to it, knowing that her housemaid Kendra could take care of her when she was busy with a case.
It was determined that while she was a minor, she would stay with her family in California in the summer & winter, while the rest of the year in New York with her grandmother to attend school. Free from her parents, Emerald took the chance to slow down when she reached college (at least as much as her mind could). Even as a 14 year-old and first year college difficulties, she loved her first year at NYU and knew it was where she'd be.
One of the many adjustments she had to make to college life was the fact that, unlike middle school and high school (both of which she raced through), pretty much everyone at NYU was an adult (or nearly there). She was there four years early, and it showed.
Puberty was still hitting her (a struggle than her grandmother and Kendra helped her deal with very well), but very few wanted to interact with her on campus. Several professors were either constantly questioning her or completely skeptical of her ability. Most students avoided her out of her persumed "greatness" (often being touted by staff at the school at the time because they got a little prodigy to parade around, something Emerald mostly enjoyed, not realizing how it hurt her chances with others).
Others would try to get help from her, and she ended up selling homework (or homework help) for many students for her first couple of years (it started innocent, became quite a mini-business, and then Emerald finally had a conscience realization when talking with Kendra later). Emerald never got caught, but she greatly regretted it when she was older and better understood what had been happening (but was forever grateful she wasn't ratted out at any point).
Ending up being mostly solitary for her first few years, Emerald spent most of her time with Kendra and her grandmother (when she wasn't busy on cases). She knew a couple of students in a friendly way (mostly students she worked on projects with), but otherwise, she explored New York City like a teenager with an older sister (something she'd end up regarding Kendra as after a few years) or grandmother would.
Emerald only had school work during spring and fall semesters in order to be able to enjoy her summers & winters when she was in California. Due to moving to New York early to get settled with her grandmother, Emerald just missed her sister Ruby's birth (not red eyes; but red hair). Each break, Emerald liked taking care of Ruby and helping her out (as well as Sapphire). At this early age, she realized how much she liked working with kids. She helped teach Ruby fun and interesting things she learned while at school (Sapphire wasn't very interested).
When she was first at NYU, Emerald explored a biology degree (for botany). Then she realized that she was more interested in the history of the plants than the plants themselves. This realization was huge. She realized that she liked learning about people and their histories. Most of her books were about ancient civilizations and religions. All of these things were what she wanted to immerse herself in.
As the teenage years went on, so did more exploring of herself. She quickly realized that she was physically attracted to both boys and girls, but never once did a romantic fantasy include a girl. Emerald knew there was some social stigma to being physically attracted to girls, but that never bothered her much. It was the 2000s, times were changing.
By the time she had completed a few years at NYU, Emerald had pretty much reached the age of the youngest that students would normally enter, and she found it easier to get along with people, more like she did when she was in middle school and high school (with a very open and cheery attitude). Knowing the city well by this point, she ended up making friends via offering to show them around.
Though she had a few flirts and dates during the breaks in California, most friends were too old for her. Her grandmother would alos largely shutdown her dates until she was 18. Between her grandmother and Kendra, Emerald stayed out of trouble. Now in her fifth year at college, she was just now approaching the age of some freshman.
There wasn't much time for boys when Emerald was at home, because she spent almost her whole break with Ruby anyway. She loved her youngest sister dearly, and the feeling was mutual; unlike with Sapphire, who just seemed to despise Emerald as she got older.
Having completed a Master's Degree in History (specializing in Ancient Times) by 17, she began on the track to completing a doctoral degree (PHD) in History; as well as pursue a Bachelor's in Education, now on her way to becoming a teacher. Not long after this time, she started dating more frequently (becoming sexually active as well as learning the benefits and detriments of alcohol).
She dated a few people but no one compared to the man she met not long after her 22nd birthday. Derek Matthews, at NYU for a PHD in Chemistry, began romancing the younger Emerald. At 29, he was older than her by a considerable amount, and though intelligent, he couldn't quite compare to her intellect. But they were a good match, and after dating for two years, they ended up moving in together. Within a year, they were engaged. Just about a year left and she'd have her PHD (the Bachelor in Education was already complete), and then she would leave school and start teaching it herself.
That bliss unraveled quickly. Emerald, oblivious to most problems, didn't see Derek's issues with balancing time with her and time spent on his own PHD, as well future career plans with chemistry. He ended up taking her out one last time (she was oblivious to the end), and he told her that he just loved chemistry more than her, and a future with her would just be too difficult for him to pursue it. Not knowing if there was more to it (there was), Emerald tearfully returned his ring and moved back in with her grandmother.
Just a bit earlier that year, her sister Ruby was revealed to be a meta. With Ruby enrolled at Hammel very soon after, Emerald visited her a few months before her PHD was done, and they hugged and cried out about what had happened to both of them recently. While she was visiting, Emerald found she really liked the school and the atmosphere of it all, and began researching metahumans more.
After completing her PHD, she decided that she still wanted to learn more (as well as not quite being ready to move on from Derek), so she got a job as a History teaching assistant at NYU, TAing for multiple professors, while taking some last remaining classes she had interest in. During this 2+ year period, she also got her own apartment and did multiple speaker/media events to talk about her past and future (in hopes to inspire the youth of today).
In early 2015, she decided that she wanted to finally teach for herself, but not at a university. She really wanted her work to matter, and after hearing her sister talk more about Hammel in one of their phone conversations; she decided to apply to work there. With a History opening, she quite happily filled it and began work as a full-time, high-school level teacher at the Hammel Institute.
